Good man [:)]

Walloc -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 9:06:49 PM)

Warsprite, how is the british faring(playing wise, I know the score)? the usual underpreforming selfs?

Watching the France Sweden game and well i know they are through, but 2nd in group gota play Spain. I would go for a win and the french have been "playing" disappointingly to say the least.

Ukraine score!

As for the rest, depends on what is your definition of exceptional. Sorry, but you discounted Denmark as "standard" but they had the Laudrups, Vilfort, Larsen and another person you may have heard of...Schmeichel.

You discounted the Czechs but they had Panenka, Nehoda and Masny.

You got excited a little bit as regards Denmark methinks [:D] The only exceptional players I see on that list are Laudrup and Schmeichel... Larsen? Before that Euro Cup he played in Italian Serie B and after that beautiful victory he played in Bundesliga Second Division apparently... That Danish squad had therefore two exceptional players surrounded by standard AND mediocre players... That makes them sort of underdog on my book.

Re Messi as this is the perfect example. The last WC. The guy was surrounded by some standard and a lot of mediocre players! Don Quixote vs the Windmills comes to mind!

As for the Czechs, my bad, I was convinced they had won on the 90s. And obviously no exceptional Czech generation at that time [;)]

Perhaps that's the big difference between the Greatest (Brazil, Germany and Italy) and the rest. They almost always manage to produce minimum a team with standard players. When you add to this an exceptional player (and this is pure luck as no factory can produce talent) that makes them almost unstoppable. It's not only the WCs they have won... It's the finals and semi-finals... Regularity that is.

Whilst the other teams produce [perhaps] one (or two if you're lucky) exceptional players + some standard players + mediocre players...

But in the end the best players must play. Always [8D]

I will trust you! But eh, you're leaders of your group!

Orm -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 9:40:28 PM)

Congratulations England on winning the group. Well deserved. [:)]

shunwick -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 9:42:32 PM)

Seriously, France, Sweden, and Ukraine were all better teams and England top the group. If we really, really stink against Italy - we are a sure thing for the semis.

And will someone please tell me the point of the idiots watching the goal-line?

That idiot warspite has actually got a score right - and its the big one (for England)!! Zeta did the same, while Dixie was the only one to get the result right in the other match.

Warspite1

No idea - but we are owed one for two years ago (and anyway the Ukrainian was offside).

I can't see any point at all with that one. But some experts claim that it makes the players somewhat more honest around the penalty area.

warspite1 -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 9:49:40 PM)

Milner disappointing, Young, Welbeck ditto. Did Walcott actually touch the ball after he came on?

This seems to be a trademark of Roy Hodgson. [:)]

TulliusDetritus -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 9:58:13 PM)

Has anyone thought about this? Did the French want to avoid the Italians and Ze Germans? [:D]

Now England will have to deal with these two football-winnning-machines if they want to get to the final... Oh well, one step, then another [sm=00000622.gif]

Dear all, final reminder to get your Q/F scores in before the Thursday kick-off.

You are predicting score at 90 or 120 minutes (if extra time is required) - so a draw is possible.

Czech Rep vs Portugal

Germany vs Greece

Spain vs France

England vs Italy

Orm -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 10:04:42 PM)

I think it was good for England to avoid Spain. I do not think France wanted to avoid Italy since Spain is the alternative. I think most "experts" would rate Spain as the best team in this tournament.

Orm -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 10:09:20 PM)

Czech Rep vs Portugal 1 - 1

Germany vs Greece 2 - 0

Spain vs France 3 - 1

England vs Italy 2 - 1

I know. My guts tell me Italy and Germany are rather dangerous these days. I suspect Spain is going to implode (à la Holland) with some stabbing in the back (Barcelona and Real Madrid players that is).

France to pass [8D]

warspite1 -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 10:11:43 PM)

I agree. Let's face it, we're England - it's going to be tough whoever we play, and our record against the "big boys" in tournament football is pretty dire. On balance of course you would prefer Italy to Spain, but that does not mean Italy should be treated with anything other than the utmost respect.

Let's just hope we don't embarrass ourselves.

Thanks Ormster [:)]

Hertston -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 10:20:21 PM)

It's a dead cert England will beat Italy, probably after being totally outplayed. Pure footie physics, in major tournaments England and Germany drift inevitably towards each other like a dying supergiant star and a black hole. Unfortunately the Germans get to be the black hole. [:(]

Especially with that Ukrainian goal not seen by the referee.

shunwick -> RE: European Championships (6/19/2012 10:36:29 PM)

The only thing England has going for them (and I admit - it's a biggy) is that they can put the ball in the back of the net. That's what it is all about. Beautiful football, loads of possesion, and heaps of pressure get you nowhere if you cannot score.
