if a sqn remnant is 'carrier trained', it's a valuable asset. of course you can use it from a land base, as needed. but you should take a long-term view, and build/train it back to full strength. a CV arriving as reinf might have a capacity of 90, w/ only 4 sqns of 78 planes embarked. you can add a rebuilt sqn to this CV. chump carriers such as CVE Long Island aren't useful for combat ops. but you can keep her in port at San Diego or Los Angeles. give her 'carrier-capable' sqns, after 90 days they'll be 'carrier-trained'. if you've got a partly-ruined CV headed for the shipyards, that's better than being sunk. but she'll be useless after repair, if you can't immediately outfit her w/ planes.
