Redmarkus5 -> HOW TO PLAY APOS - THE BASICS (6/2/2012 3:09:47 PM)

This thread will provide some very basic instructions. I own the Graviteam version with the two DLC expansions, which explains any minor variations you spot in the UI, but it's essentially the same game.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:13:58 PM)

Start by selecting Quick Battle as this is the easiest way to setup a game and learn the controls - forget the Tutorial as it's rubbish...

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:17:26 PM)

Now select the location for your battle...

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:20:20 PM)

Zoom in and select the red flag for the first side - the player is red and the AI is blue (the opposite of the NATO standard).

On the left you can see the available unit types.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:23:26 PM)

Right-click on any green square of your choice to change its ownership to Axis (as the red force is the Axis in this instance). You can change the ownership of as many squares as you choose, or leave them neutral.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:25:17 PM)

Select a platoon or battery from the list on the left. You can only select one platoon/battery at a time.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:27:57 PM)

Mouse over one of the little circles in one of the squares on the map. The green indicator will appear.

Each circle can accommodate one platoon of any type. Some squares have more circles than others. (A hex based system would have been way better).

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:29:33 PM)

LEFT CLICK on the circle of choice and your selected platoon will be placed on the map.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:35:02 PM)

Repeat the process to add all desired units to the map.

Switch to the Blue Flag to add units for the opposite (AI) side.

Change the ownership of each square as desired. I believe that this affects the AI setup options.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:37:19 PM)

When you are ready, enter the battle.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:39:48 PM)

You will be taken to a 'briefing' screen. The arrows represent your briefing and indicate that the Axis force should attack the area containing the flame icon.

Click on the flame icon to enter the battlefield.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:44:22 PM)

You are now in deployment mode.

Your units are on the map, but they may be difficult to see.

The colored squares indicate the quality of cover. Green inside green is best, I believe.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:47:08 PM)

Click on a Platoon (top right) to select it...

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:49:27 PM)

Right click on any tank or squad icon at top right to auto-scroll to that location...

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:53:00 PM)

Select a SINGLE tank or squad at top right or on the game board and press the 'Q' key on your keyboard. You view is now locked to that unit.

Use the arrow keys to rotate the view.

Use the center mouse wheel to zoom in or out.

Look around the area and get a feel for the lay of the land.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:56:02 PM)

Select other tanks or squads in the top right OOB and press Q twice (once to deselect the previous unit in view and one more time to select the new unit).

In the game, you can issue orders to other units by selecting them in the OOB without shifting your view lock from the current unit.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 3:57:53 PM)

Press 'F10' or click the Map icon at top left for a map view of the battlefield.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:00:29 PM)

In Map View, only spotted units are shown, so beware of FOW effects!

You can select units and issue commands to them in Map View.

BEWARE - unless you select pause, the game is not paused while you are in map view, except during the deployment phase.

[image]local://upfiles/27287/47F42803AE14443494B14790D578E3AD.jpg[/image]

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:02:32 PM)

NOTE: In the game settings (Main Menu) you can select the conditions that should auto-pause the game (e.g. enemy contact, etc.). I used as many as possible while learning the game and then deselected a few.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:07:50 PM)

You can also mount or dismount troops during the setup phase, based on your tactical plan, as well as at any later point in the game.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:10:28 PM)

To reposition a unit on the battlefield or via the map during deployment:

1. Select the unit.
2. Right click on the destination.

If the destination is VALID, the unit will instantly redeploy.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:15:22 PM)

To change facing during deployment do the following:

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:16:24 PM)

NOTE: to change facing during combat you can either use this right mouse drag mechanism OR you can press 'V' on your keyboard and then right click in the desired direction.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:19:11 PM)

When ready, press the ENTER key. The deployment will be executed and you will enter the Initial Orders phase.

The game is still paused but the horrible green and red grid pattern has gone.

Issue any initial movement orders or artillery plotting commands (see below).

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:25:40 PM)

Conduct your artillery/air plotting if you have any available artillery assets. To find these assets, select each Infantry command unit or any spotter units in play. Only units that can issue artillery and air strikes will have the appropriate command buttons displayed.

Pre-planned fires will arrive more quickly when ordered. You can fire on any point in range, but if you select a pre-plotted location for the strike, the effects will be better.

Blue-on-Blue artillery fire is a possibility in this game, so don't setup strikes too close to your units and avoid moving units into targeted terrain.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:29:10 PM)

If you right-click and drag you can create linear pre-plotted strikes.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:31:04 PM)

You can also plan your artillery and air strikes on the Map.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: How to Play APOS - the basics (6/2/2012 4:39:11 PM)

When you are ready for battle, press the ENTER key again.

Issue commands to units.

Hold down the mouse wheel to rotate the view when no unit is locked in view and also spin it up or down to raise/lower the view.

Use the arrow keys to rotate the view when your view is locked on a unit and the mouse wheel to zoom in and out and raise or lower the view at the same time.

There are several other view options, but you can learn those as you go along.

REMEMBER: You can pause the game at any time to look around and issue new commands to units.

Here endeth the Lesson.

G'day,

Hey, this is excellent.

Thanks for the work involved in putting it up.

Cheers,

Thanks for starting this thread! [&o]

I thought I would add for the benefit of new players that under item #12 of the "Quick Battle Settings" you can choose which map to use for the quick battle.

Also, the WASD keys can also be used to navigate around the map, you can pivot/rotate the view with the middle mouse button or by holding "C", and you can jump to anywhere on the map with a right click if no unit is selected.
