sj80 -> European battle for the Pacific - No Terje - Campaign for India (6/5/2012 5:36:57 PM)

Terje has already started his Allied AAR and here is the Japan AAR.
This is my first WITPAE PBEM game. I have played several months against the AI and I'm a long time forum lurker.

We defined some House Rules.
- restricted units must pay PP to cross borders
- no Chinese industry bombing before ‘43
- No 4E bombers below 10K ft (naval attacks only)
- invasions only in base/dot hexes
- no invasions with fragmented units
- no subs invasions
- Garrison limits must be observed (no evacuating to allow partisans to destroy the infrastructure)
- only 1 CV port strike at turn 1. But LBA can strike other ports.
- max 6 PTs per TF, max 2 PT TFs per hex
- no new allied TFs on turn 1 but existing TF can be redirected
- max sweep altitude = 30k

We are playing Scenario 1 with PDU ON, Realistic R&D ON and Advanced Weather OFF.

sj80 -> Dec 7, 1941 (6/5/2012 7:24:03 PM)

The Empire of Japan declared war on the USA! They are unprepared and we hit them hard.
Securing the Resource and Oil Centers in the SRA is the only way to secure the future of Japan. To prevent any USA interventions the High Command decided to attack the USA at first with a destructive blow.

sj80 -> Dec 8, 1941 (6/6/2012 9:20:14 AM)

Here is the update of turn 2.

Why was the KB using only bombs in my second PH attack? The attack distance was 6 hexes. 50% of the Kates were set to first mission Naval Attack and second mission Port Attack. The others are set to first mission Port Attack. All planes are set to use torpedos. All CVs are having enough torps for all Kates.
Did I do something wrong? Are torps on Port Attacks only available in the Dec 7 strike?

sj80 -> Dec 9, 1941 (6/6/2012 2:09:12 PM)

At Dec 9 most action happend in the PHI, including a early war "Turkey Shot" of our bombers. [:@]

The Wake Invasion force was stopped and strengthen. I will take Wake under cover of the KB. In Malaya everything runs as planned, much more ships are on the way to deliver troops for Singapore.
This picture shows the action around PHI.

fodder -> RE: Dec 9, 1941 (6/7/2012 4:23:50 PM)

Sign me up! [sm=00000613.gif] I very much like the style of your AAR so far. I think you are only sure to get get the torps at pearl on the Dec, 7th.

This is from the manual, hope it helps.

7.2.1.7 AIR UNIT TARGETS AND DESTINATIONS
Bombers attacking ports will attack any ships at anchor 50% of the time, however, TF’s docked in port will not be attacked. These attacks use bombs with only a small percentage of torpedo bombers using torpedoes (as it is assumed these ships may be in dry dock or protected by torpedo nets).

Good luck and BANZAI! [sm=happy0005.gif]

sj80 -> RE: Dec 9, 1941 (6/8/2012 7:39:26 PM)

Hey fodder, thanks for the clarification. The rule really makes sense. It seems I should read more in the manual, but I'm unsure what rules are still valid because of the many updates.
I will try to give a screenshot overview every second turn. Except there are any interesting developments and it will become very interesting! The game is now around Christmas Day, so I have to speed up my AAR.

Combat results Dec 10, 1941:
*An allied TK was hit by a torpedo.
*Some allied DDs tried to raid my PHI invasion forces, but they were stopped by a SC TF.
*Many fighter action above Clark Field and Singapore. Bombing of Clark Field is stopped until the CAP is destroyed.

Combat results Dec 11, 1941:
See the picture. [:)] I'm afraid about "Fortress Palembang". My recon shows no such preparations, but I will try to capture Palembang as early as possible. Still no sign of Force-Z or his cruisers ...

sj80 -> Dec 12, 1941 (6/12/2012 10:45:48 PM)

Here is the picture with most interesting development during Dec 12, 1941. All things runs as planned, the Palembang invasion force will arrive next turn. But south of Singkawang is a strong allied Cruiser TF located and between Borneo/Celebes are moving 6 enemy ships of unknown type into our direction. Maybe an Allied attack?

Lessons learned today: Don't use a SC TF with BB to protect an Invasion TF which has a target located on a river and that is not direct on the sea! The SC TF will turn away!

sj80 -> Dec 13, 1941 - Clash of Steel (6/19/2012 11:22:38 AM)

This game is definitely not for people with weak hearts or some kind of heart disease. Watching the combat replay made me very nervous and I needed a break after so much action. This day was the turn with very heavy surface combat action.
Force-Z tries to attack the Baby KB between Borneo and the Celebes and the Allied Cruiser force jumped directly into the Palembang invasion TF! I hope the picture is "readable" because I had to add many content to it.
Not all Japanese forces were in position as planned (e.g. BB TF to protect Palembang invasion diverted off last day because Palembang can't be entered by BBs and was too far away this turn to participate on the battle) but our forces fought incredibly brave against overwhelming forces.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Dec 13, 1941 - Clash of Steel (6/20/2012 12:56:48 PM)

Whew!!! lots of surface combat going on. And your AAR is distinctive, congratulations. Um........may I make a tiny suggestion? How about trying to post smaller pictures with a single theme with multiple posts to cover all the action you want to cover. It's a hassle trying to scroll left and right to see everything and the text runs over to the right edge making it mandatory to scroll to see it all. Just a tiny thought. Other than that great job........keep up the great work. I'm subscribed to this AAR to keep up with your game even though I don't post all the time.

sj80 -> January 22, 1942 - PHI region (6/30/2012 9:48:51 PM)

The game is progressing very fast. Unfortunately I was to lazy for updating the forum. So I will bring the game to the current state and give an overview over every region at January 22nd, 1942.
Lets start with PHI. Terje was very passive here and retreated all units into Clark Field and Bataan. We will keep this "prisoner camp" and wait unit all supply is gone. There is no possibility to bombard with ships because of the mine field in Bataan. [8|]

Larry, I will keep my pictures smaller.

sj80 -> January 22, 1942 - Eastern DEI (6/30/2012 10:26:47 PM)

I occupied all important bases and could capture the oil fields/refineries with no or only minimal damage. With Force-Z and his cruisers sunken or damaged, the allied surface ships are no real threat at the moment. I put a high pressure on Java.

[image]local://upfiles/39633/107FE4CF568B4273B90ABC91CA0DD191.jpg[/image]

sj80 -> January 22, 1942 - Western DEI and Singapore (6/30/2012 10:32:19 PM)

It's all about Singapore. The IJA assembled a massive force to conquer the city. Every available unit across whole the empire was sent to Malaya. My troops will arrive tomorrow in Singapore.

sj80 -> January 22, 1942 - Solomon Islands and KB (6/30/2012 10:57:18 PM)

The Solomon Islands were conquered without any allied resistance. KB gave protection to all landings. Terje has evacuated Port Moresby, he is trying to save the Dutch base forces from destruction. Only one enemy carrier was sighted around Guadalcanal some days ago but he inflicted no damage and retreated before KB could arrive.

I landed on New Caledonia to use the bases for my patrol/recon planes. I hope the Mavis planes and my subs with Glenns will discover any enemy TF coming from the east. KB stands ready to raid Sydney!

sj80 -> January 22, 1942 - China overview (6/30/2012 11:28:29 PM)

This is my first PBEM campaign so I was very unsure about the right strategy in China. But it seems the things are developing not bad for the Japanese side. I inflicted high squad losses to the Chinese since start of the game. The Chinese are complete passive and are only creating bigger stacks every day. [;)]
In northern China I will go for Sian and I'm concentrating my forces around Nanyang. I bought some Sally units from Manchuko (new HQ is Southern Army) and placed them on Hankow to bomb all Chinese units back to hell.
I really need some hints for China, so if anybody has any kind of tip please tell me!

sj80 -> Jan 23rd, 1942 -Singapore captured! (7/3/2012 7:48:07 AM)

On the January 23rd, 1942 the Japanese Empire is blessed with the capture of Singapore. 8 Divs and many other troops have crossed the river and the city fell in the first shock attack! The Southern Army will now prepare the invasion of Java.

The KB attacked an allied tanker convoy on the east cost of Australia and will head towards Sydney.

MAurelius -> RE: Jan 23rd, 1942 -Singapore captured! (7/3/2012 9:07:21 AM)

[X(][X(] WOW - "really hurt hist logistics" - every sunk tanker hurts the Allies.... and you just sank a whole lot of them :) [&o]

fodder -> RE: Jan 23rd, 1942 -Singapore captured! (7/3/2012 4:59:42 PM)

Taking Singers is always a BANZIA! [sm=happy0005.gif]

But look at all those tankers and no escort???

That's a double, BANZIA! BANZIA! [sm=happy0005.gif][sm=happy0005.gif]

obvert -> RE: Jan 23rd, 1942 -Singapore captured! (7/3/2012 5:31:54 PM)

That will hurt a bunch. Nice work. Banzai!

The tankers are great, the AOs are even better. I haven't SEEN that many total in a year let alone sunk them. [:)]

sj80 -> RE: European battle for the Pacific - Japan View - No Terje (7/4/2012 11:59:09 PM)

Hey all, thanks for your comments!
Here is the list of all tankers/oilers (+4 more durch TAN oilers) I sunk in the last 52 days. I've never played the Allied side, so I can't estimate how much these numbers are hurting Terje.

sj80 -> KB raids Sydney - results and questions (7/5/2012 12:14:43 AM)

Here comes the overview of my Sydney raid and his results. The Allied has suffered much more losses compared to my Japanese Empire. Many ships in Sydney were badly damaged and I lost only some planes.
But the operation didn't run the way I want.
The picture shows all three days with my orders and below every day the results.

I set the KB to Retirement allowed and all planes to max range + naval/port attack for Kates and Vals. It seems I'm having problems using the Retirement allowed setting in combination with air attacks. At both days only Kates attacked, but I did set the target movement point for KB so close to Sydney that Vals should have been in range. I think the TF has started the retreat before the air attacks were flown and was too far away for Vals.
The KB attacked always Sydney and not the tankers that were not disbanded in the port. I thought that the seconday mission (port attack) is only be used if there were no targets for the first mission (naval attack). [&:]

Here are my questions:
Is Retirement allowed a useful setting for port raids? Or better Remain on station to ensure that all planes can fly?
How is Retirement allowed working for CV TFs? Does it ensure that my planes (at least the planes with longest range) can attack while moving back? I thought before this action that a CV TF will stay on the target hex until all air action is solved and retreat after that. But it seems I was wrong.
Should I had set the attack range of Kates down to 7 to ensure both can attack with the setting Retirement allowed?

I'll try, but if anyone knows any better please speak up.

If I want a task force to do anything, I make dam sure it is not set to retirement allowed.

Naval movement comes fiirst then air attacks.

From the pictures you show of the KB positions , if you had set your kates to a max range of 7, they would not have attacked the port. It is 9 hexes away.

Did you have any search aircraft out and was the tanker taskforce spotted before the attacks on the port took place. If you hadn't spotted the tanker task force before the air attack took place the only target they had was the port.

Hope this helps.

Edit to fix spacing

sj80 -> Jan 29, 1942 - Java invasion started! (7/6/2012 6:53:40 PM)

Hey fodder, thanks for your explanations! Next time I will use remain on station. Yes, I had the Jakes on my CS set for recon Sydney.

The IJA is ahead time plan with the early capture of Singapore. At Jan 28, 1942 the first invasion wave for Java has left Singapore with 4 Inv Divs together with many Eng and Art units. The largest invasion force created by my Japanese Empire ever. [:)] 2 more divs with many smaller units will be the second invasion wave. I want to finish Java as early as possible to use the remaining invasion bonus time for some more action.

sj80 -> Jan 30, 1942 (7/7/2012 10:04:32 PM)

The January is almost finished. The Java invasion is running and my ASW TFs have done a good job last week.

One question regarding Malaria. I've read that large bases are protecting against Malaria. But how large is big enough? I remember size 8 (port + airfield size), but I'm unsure. Can someone please clarify?

Edit: Ups, the title of the lower picture is wrong. It's obviously the Java invasion force and not the Burma invasion force. [:D]

sj80 -> 08/02/1942 - Industry and China (7/15/2012 9:57:26 PM)

The game progresses and again I was too lazy to update the AAR the last days. Here are the industry pools and the China situation after 2 months of heavy fighting. More updates for the other locations will follow shortly. Any comments are welcome!

sj80 -> 08/02/1942 - Sumatra and Java (7/16/2012 1:03:00 PM)

Surprise, Surprise ... the British CVs pop up near Palembang. I'm really amazed that Terje is sacrificing a small CV TF against the very strong LBA concentration in Palembang. What does Terje wants to do with this TF? Stopping my Java invasion or raiding Palembang? Maybe the American CVs are near, but I don't know. I haven't seen any American CV since weeks. He is definitely too late for stopping the Java invasion, the main invasion TFs are gone since turns.
CVL Hermes and a British BB are reported sunk. Much more torpedo bombers were sent to Palembang and a strong Japanese BB TF is now hunting the British.

sj80 -> February 9, 1942 - More CV/BB attacks near Palembang (7/18/2012 10:57:09 AM)

The Japanese Intelligence Service was too fast with declaring the British CV, CVL and BB as sunken. All three ships were still afloat. More attacks were flown with Nells and Betties. The CV and CVL are definitely sunken now, the BB seems to be still in service. More than 40 British carrier planes are shown as destroyed on ground.
In the combat report the CVL Hermes is shown as sunken without any hit. How is that possible? Can someone please clarify that?

It looks like he was sinking already and definitely sunk during attack
Attack like that are not 1 minute attacks, they are longer than animation in game. So probably you pilots see last moments of Hermes.

If attack not happen he probably will sunk also but you will have not confirmation.
Also during attack ships using full speed and extreme maneuvers. It can make temporary flotation repairs to fail and ship sunk

PS. Nice action with TKs and Sydney ride and now with British navy

BANZAI!!!

Thanks for clarify this combat result. Maybe the captain of CVL Hermes has ordered to scuttle the ship as Japanese torpedo bombers appeared at the horizon. [;)]
The Japanese Empire is planning more offensive operations. The next operation will be the invasion of Northern Australia. The preparations are almost finished ...

sj80 -> Feb 15, 1942 - Darwin invasion (7/24/2012 12:08:14 AM)

Today the 4th, 56th Division, Guards Mixed Brigade, some Tank Regiments and supporting troops landed in Darwin. The Allied resistance is much stronger than expected.
After all troops are unloaded I will start with deliberating attacks. I learned today that the transport planes will only drop paratroopers at an enemy base within their normal range.

The sunken Royal Sovereign disappeared from the sunken ship list and the Tennessee and the Maryland were added.

sj80 -> February 22nd, 1942 - Overview (7/29/2012 1:44:45 PM)

Again I was a bit lazy with updating the AAR. The game has progressed some turns since my last update. Here is an overview over the most interesting regions.

Terje and I decided to switch over to DaBabes map with stacking limits everywhere. We both are no friends of "death stars". To prepare that change we have declared a one week land&air ceasefire in China and PHI before using the new map. His retreating forces from Loyang and Sian are moving westwards, most of my forces are moving southwards for their next target: Changsha. The 30k - 40k stacking limits in rough terrain prevent any offensive actions north or west of Sian make no sense.
Burma is almost quiet, my tanks are hunting his retreating units. 2/3rd of Java are under Japanese control. Within latest 2 weeks Soerbaja will fall.

Terje is fortifying the Fiji islands. I'm expanding the bases around New Caledonia. I really want to force him into a decisive battle with his CVs. Something like Midway, but with a better result for the Jap side. [:D]
