findmeifyoucan -> Kwajalein Island on turn 1 question (6/11/2012 5:29:46 AM)

After the pre-turn surprise attack on Pearl Harbor as the Japanese I look at this island and we have a 1 air base currently with of interest 9 zero's on escort and 9 Betty's set on naval attack. Since a 1 air base does not allow any offensive attacks does this not mean that the zeroes could not have supported a naval attack by the Betty's which in turn cannot do a bombing mission from a 1 airbase anyhow? So, even if an enemy task force had been spotted on the pre-turn from this island no attack would have been allowed? I forget off hand but I think we have something like a 68 air support but at this point can only support defensive missions from a 1 airbase.

Is this correct in my understanding of the rules or am I wrong?

Comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kwajalein does not have Zero's and Betty's stationed at game start so I wonder how they got there?

You can't fly offensive missions from a level 1 airfield, no matter how much AV support you have there. AV support is only used to keep your aircraft in a "ready" state.

Try moving those strike aircraft to Roi-Namur, it has a larger airfield (but no airHQ to supply torpedoes.. yet)

They start at the base to the north ... forget the name ... and it is a larger AF.

Doesn't this airfield complex (Roi Namur, Kwajalein) start out with the 24th Air Flotilla regarding torpedo support?

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought that the penalty for a strike from a base that doesn't have the right size airfield was a reduced bomb-load (using the extended range bomb-load not the normal range bomb-load, ie no torpedoes) rather than NO raid whatsoever. Do I have that wrong? Hal

John 3rd -> RE: Kwajalein Island on turn 1 question (6/11/2012 3:57:00 PM)

They could fly from Roi Namur without issue.

Puhis -> RE: Kwajalein Island on turn 1 question (6/11/2012 3:57:40 PM)

Offensive missions (bombing, sweep) need at least level 2 airfield. 2E bombers need level 4 airfield to use normal bomb load. Torpedo bombers need level 2 airfield and torpedoes from air HQ.

Yes it does, and the range of the Air HQ on Roi-Namur allows torpedo-based attacks from Kwajalein. Assuming that the Kwaj a/f is appropriate sized for such offensive actions, which a size 1 will not allow.

KenchiSulla -> RE: Kwajalein Island on turn 1 question (6/11/2012 9:38:20 PM)

My mistake, Kwajalein starts with an AirHQ. You just need to fill it with torpedoes before you enable the aircraft on Roi-Namur..

Q-Ball -> RE: Kwajalein Island on turn 1 question (6/13/2012 1:52:19 PM)

It came into play in a PBEM I have vs. PjHortlund. He used the ENTERPRISE TF to completely trash my Wake invasion force, but in attempting to completely wipe out the last remnants, got too close to Roi Namur..........Miss Betty came out, and no more ENTERPRISE.

Allied players have to know and stay away from any torp-equipped bases early. Keeping a 14 hex distance from Roi Namur at all times is a good idea (14 hexes being the max range of the Zero)

You're right, but in the Kwajalein Area (Roi-Namur, Maloelap, etc.) you
don't have any Zero and you cannot upgrade your Claude. Betty can fly
and launch torpedo, but japanese don't have good fighters coverage:
I've attacked the 'Enterprise' with 20 Claude in escort and I lost 12
airplanes and 10 good pilots (my mistake, I know, but DON'T use Claude
versus the allied carrier fighter!). You can bring a Zero Det from Takao,
but it need 3 turns (Takao-Babeldaob(1)-Truk(2)-RoiNamur(3)).
