RJinVA_slith -> Bug in Historic Events (6/24/2012 6:13:16 PM)

Hello to everyone,

I'm writing to provide player confirmation of a bug in the firing of CoG:EE historic events. (I am refering here to a single player against the AI). This problem has been reported by others earlier, but without specific details. The players reported playing but not seeing the historic events firing during their games. I can confirm that historic events are eliminated from game play under most circumstances. I am using the most recent build 1.0.9.

The process of saving a game appears to cause the problem. The player will see no historic events if he is playing from a previously saved game, and may encounter a CTD under certain circumstances (described below) when launching a previously saved game. The game appears to only generate historic events when it is first launched (starting from turn one without a previous save).

So basically you will only experience historical events during your earliest turns. Once you save your game and exit, you will no longer get the events. The game is fully playable without the historic events, but to lose them is is a shame, since WestCiv put a lot of work in creating them, and they do increase the historical feel of the game.

Also, there are coding errors in the historic events for the 1792 Scenario which prevent these events from firing, even with a freshly started game. These errors can be fixed by the player by editing the COG2Events file in that scenario's directory, but the events will still be unavailable after you save the game and exit. More on this below.

To generate a CTD:

1. Start a brand new game (any scenario except the 1792 Scenario, unless you fix it), and save your game at a turn just prior to the firing of a known historic event. Exit the program entirely.

2. Relaunch the program and reload the previously saved game. Hit 'End Turn'. The game will begin processing moves, but then CTD.

You can relaunch the game again (after the CTD) and it will play 'normally', but without the historic events.

1792 Scenario: The historic events in the 1792 Scenario are miscoded. The events are given a 'discontingency' of 39, meaning they do not fire if event 39 is in place. (Event 39 is the resortation of the monarchy, but the Scenario begins with Louis XVI still on the throne). I suggest changing all events scheduled to fire before 1796 to a discontingency of '0', rather than '39'. This will fire the events, until the game is saved and you exit the program, per above. Of course you may change all of the events to a different discontigency if you prefer. The events can be edited using any text processor, such as notepad.

I know WestCiv is very busy now with their latest release, and I wish them the very best of success in that. (Support your independent wargame developers!) But I do hope they will find some time to fix this in the future. It's a shame not to have these interesting events in one of their flagship products.

By the way, the map is still beautiful, even after all these years!

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

RJinVA

Not ignoring you... I'm still trying to find out about this issue, and am hoping to have a response soon.

I have also come across issues with Historical Events.
