Encircled -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 7:47:09 PM)

Doesn't this variant start with a CD gun battery on the way to PM?

jeffk3510 -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 7:47:15 PM)

GJ, have you thought about bombing the AF at PM to hit supply points instead?

[:D]

GJ, "duds". If they were "dudes" they might have been California surfers who slammed into Kaga head first. [;)]

House Stark -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 7:57:28 PM)

If the US subs are shooting dudes it would explain the lack of damage inflicted...Sooner or later Greyjoy is probably going to start including funny spellings on purpose and have some fun at our expense.

jeffk3510 -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 7:59:05 PM)

I have launched duds before with my subs.. never dudes.

Nice catch CR

Andav -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 8:25:21 PM)

I think the Thunderstorms had a lot to do with the results at PM. If the skies are clear tomorrow, you will have better results. If you have some float planes on BBs or CAs you might have them recon as well. It really helps.

Canoerebel -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 8:35:33 PM)

I may have misinterpreted the combat report, or I may not be aware of the context in which the action occurred, but using KB strike aircraft to bomb ground troops or facilities is pretty wasteful. Those guys need to be nurtured and saved and used only for the missions that suit them or when an absolutely vital opportunity comes up. I don't think this is one of those situations. How many mission sorties are left after the strikes off Oz and then the PM missions? Mission sorites are gold. Don't use them on mundane stuff like this.

Capt. Harlock -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 8:50:53 PM)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2271 troops, 24 guns, 16 vehicles, Assault Value = 71

Defending force 10629 troops, 84 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 294

Japanese ground losses:
175 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

What kind of arty do they have for God's sake!?

Probably something that sounds like giant whoopee cushions, and your troops are laughing too hard to advance! [:D]

Cribtop -> RE: Let's start! (7/26/2012 9:52:23 PM)

I think sometimes the leader penalty occurs in invasions when the full unit hasn't unloaded. Joe Doofus (Dudefus?) is assigned by the AI to command the fragment while the good leader is still aboard ship waiting for a landing craft. Then again, I've seen it happen when everyone gets ashore, even good leaders can fumble a roll now and then.

I still have more than half of missions and all the torps. Plenty for any "big" encounter at this stage of the war...

PM finally falls guys. I had to devote my major warships that belonged to KB to bomb the base and, after that, everything was over pretty easily.
PM was a must for me. I needed to get it and get it fast. I didn't expect that resistance so now my plans have slowed down again....but we soldier on!
Now we need to get Horn isl. and Mereuake. But first i need to get PM operational and base there a BF and some recon planes.

In southern borneo, at Tarakan, his CDguns have screwed my escorts....at least 5 DD/APDs sunk or ready to sink....but we're ashore in good order and tomorrow we should take the base
A strong Cruiser TF (with Boise leading it) is moving towards us....we will screen our landings with some SCTFs and with Kaga's backing up.
His CVs are still in southern Timor...so we should be safe by now....

Now Tarakan, then Kendari and then Ambon, while the Java invasion should wait for Singa's fall....

We are sending reinforcements to Buna, Lae, Munda and Shortland... i wanna get this theatre safe ASAP.

Nope. PM is too exposed and so it's the whole NG.

On the contrary, i want him to invade there.
I'm planning to base 1 HQ at Rabaul and 1 at Munda. Both of them are Air Divisions, so 4 range. Around those 2 Air HQ i wanna build up 8/9 bases, each of them with 4 lvl AFs. Lunga, Tulagi, PM, Mylne Bay...all those places are expendable...but they will be strongly garrisoned and not built up (except for forts).
he will need to risk to get there, and i'll have the chance to attrit his navy... then i'll have several connecting bases...he won't be able to shut down them all at once...[;)]

The same goes for Tarawa-Makin area.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 10, 42

Ok guys...this was, by far, the bloodiest turn so far...

On the waters between Balikapan and Tarakan the allied sent their best cruisers. The Japs fought bravely...with Tanaka leading the fight...but those nasty cruisers did wonders against my, once again, harmless CAs...
Losses are almost equal (thanks to kaga who chased the fleeing enemy after the night battles) but our losses are clearly heavier thinking in the long run...

Everything started at night, when Tanaka's TF spotted the enemy coming for the amphib transports unloading at Tarakan and moved in to stop.
he found a very strong TF, composed of the best allied cruisers at this stage of the war and a couple of useless DDs...

And then, our last shield.... the strong SCTF (best leader after Tanaka) create a barricate in front of our transports who went fleeing....

CA Haguro was immediately hit by the Boise and started to burn furiously...the americans did show great firing capabilities, targetting the Aguro from 20,000 yards!!!!
We fought back...but the allies seems to always have the upper hand....and the Aguro was easily mauled by the Cornwall big guns.... only the intervention of the DDs saved the day...Long Lances torps did finally something when the DDs closed the distances...

GJ, you do know that Japan isn't exactly able to replace warships like the Allies can, right? [;)]

princep01 -> RE: Waves of corpes (7/27/2012 4:35:16 AM)

Ser Greyjoy, my companion in arms, why such a long face?  Why do you let tears cloud your eyes and doubts creep insidiously into your morale?  is this the Bushido spirit?

You have very effectively destroyed the cream of the Allied surface forces in the DEI.  Yes, it is sad to see large ships like Haguro lost.  No, you will never able to replace it.  However, you have destroyed the Allied surface combatants in the DEI and taken a significant portion of the Allied naval strength in the Indian Ocean with them.  Some Allied CVs are about and do represent a clear and present danger, but what we witnessed was the death ride of the Allied cruiser forces, not the defeat of the Imperial fleet a la Leyte Gulf.  The way is basically clear for the continued rapid capture of the SRA.  A real threat to your amphibious operations has been eliminated.  Most of your damaged ships will survive to fight another day...his will not.

Hold your head high, Ser Greyjoy.  I am sure there is little cheering in the Allied camp tonight.

Press on proud warrior....perhaps a little more judiciously.  But, fear not, you have clear command of the seas and a number of important objectives to go with it.  Press the enemy, engage him more closely.  And put an end to Singers before the end of the month.

My Master,

your words, as usual, brought it up back again! You are right. We took some losses, but we're still advancing and you cannot make a scrumble egg without breaking some eggs, right?
The fact is that, despite the very wise suggestion of not to do it, i keep on comparing this match with my other one, where i had experienced the almost invicibility of japanese CAs during the first 2 years of the war.
But luck is a factor in naval engagements. Had my CAs engaged Boise and friends during night time things could have gone differently...or maybe not.... well, i guess i simply have to stop thinking about the loss of Haguro and Ashigara and concentrate on the war that still need to be fought

Singapore is daily bombed and the AF is being now closed and trashed for 20 days in a row. It's isolated and, de facto, ready to be taken. Our troops are only 46 miles far from Jahore Baru.... so we're almost there!
For the final assault i'll devote 200 bombers to pound the place. If the first shock attack goes well, i think we can get it by the end of jan 42.

Then i'll have still 2 full months of the amphibious bonus...gotta use it!

I need to have a bridgehead in Java by the end of Jan. Now, after the fall of Tarakan, we'll advance towards Balikapan with the 5th amphib Bde, supported by a couple of SNLF units, while 2 reinforced regiments will attack Ambon and Kendari from Mindanao. The KB, after securing the SWPAC sector, will refuel and will join Kaga's group by mid feb 42 hopefully.

I also need to understand what to do with Burma. Our 15th Army is at the gates of Pegu but he has reinforced the river crossings north of Moulmein and i will take a while before i can really hope to break through... probably an amphib operation is needed directly against Rangoon, in order to bypass the whole problem. The AF at moulmein could be used to provide efficient LRCAP over the advancing fleet, so that the KB could operate in IO in a free-hunter role...

Do not say that name so loud. This ship is nightmare of all Japanese players.

I heard that if you say his name five times to mirror he will come back with 16inch guns, 100mm armor and 5k AA defense

The only Brooklyn/St. Louis class the US lost during the war, USS Helena, did return as a Baltimore-class CA, her keel being laid just two months after her loss.

Let's see, USS Boise sunk Jan-42... (scribbles furiously)... she can indeed return as an Iowa-class in late 1944 (see construction of USS Wisconsin).

Wait, the USN in 1944 still assigned states as BB names.

Ah! Here we go! She can come back as an Essex class! As was amply demonstrated, we named those proud ships after any random name.

Instead of 16" rifles, I offer you 73 Hellcats, 15 Dauntlesses, and 15 Avengers.

I recommend you suggest that your opponent rename one of his incoming CVs in honor of his martyred CL.
