Hi all. Tonight I start an adventure w/ one old friend and several new friends. RHS105 is a japan enhanced senario. I will leave the details of the enhancements to ElCid. I am not fully educated on all of the mod but will post the differences as I spot them as I make my turns. I will adjust my strategies on the go as I learn the details. ElCid will post the command positions for the allies. I already have some issues from 1st turn production that I wish to post and start asking some questions. But before I do so I would like ElCid to give some background on the different strategy possibilities available to the jap player because of the senario pwhexe file modifications(from the yellow river to the arctic back to Burma). This is a demonstration Tag Team game. The concept was proposed by Nemo in WITP days, but he and I were unable to agree on a Japanese strategy. His ideas - push the Allies off the map and likely win auto victory - seemed unfair in those days with few locations and few local defense forces - and too few slots to fix either. Today - we have a rich combination of locations and units everywhere, and the dream of a fully developed riverine and Arctic Ocean set of pwhexe.dat files (plural because they change seasonally - also because they show wartime construction of RR and roads) - permits us to consider going anywhere without being "gamey." The offensive will be run by Big Red - and he seems to have ideas almost as aggressive as Nemo - except possibly slightly more realistic in terms of not trying to go in every direction simultaneously (which I think spreads a modest force too thin). He is daunted by the Japanese economy, so I prepared a foundation turn for him only addressing production and LOC matters, along with my "sorting out" of ships (having ships return to key ports sorted by speed, to form more efficient convoys in future). This explains his comment above that he has "some issues" with production - he didn't do it - I did. That initial economic turn was sent - with the public Japanese password - to all players on the RHS distribution list. Anyone can join the list and will get every turn as well as replay, reports and supplimental data analysis reports, as they are generated. We will also publish the Allied password. This is still a "blind" game for the five players. That is, Big Red will not look at the Allied side and the Allied players will not look at the Japanese side. For the sake of being surprised which is more fun. I may have to help Big Red with some economic matters, and I may look at a specific place if a technical problem occurs (in order to understand it) - but I do not want to know where things are or where they are going - and in general won't look at that. Japan has enough problems on its plate, long term: the Allies should become overwhelming in due course. Anyway - if you wish to know more than is revealed in this thread - then just ask to have your email added to our distribution list. You may ask Mifune, Big Red or myself. The Japanese are a micro-tag team with Big Red in operational and tactical command. But I am his technical advisor and I did the initial economic foundation turn - taking a lot of the tedium out of entering the critical first turn. I may end up routing convoys and controlling production - and initially I managed construction in Japanese Home Islands, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, Manchukuo, Korea and the Eastern part of Inner Mongolia and Jehol (a nominal " puppet country" not defined in the game located between Manchukuo and China). This because Russia is not at war so these constitute a backwater not of operational interest to the operational player. I focused on expanding key airfields, ports and fortifications and building concentrations of forces the operational player will find useful if war comes to one or more of these locales. As operational player and team commander, Big Red has the ability to change any order or take control of any unit, even in these areas. Allied Chair One: The US Pacific Fleet Chair. This player controls the US West Coast, Off Map Eastern USA, Off Map Midwest USA, Off Map Panama, Off map Recife Brazil, New Zealand and dependencies, as well as the USN Pacific Fleet, USN North Pacific, and USN South Pacific commands. It has operational control over French Polynesia and French New Caledonia, and Free French units anywhere in the area, subject to the approval of Chair Three, which controls most Free French units and is technically sovereign in these South Pacific locations. This Chair may also be thought of as the Eastern Chair. Peculiar note: Chair One does NOT control Alaska Command, although it does control North Pacific Command in the same area, modeling the divided command in this area. It controls New Zealand to give NZ a player responsible for its defense, and because US forces historically based there (and on islands it controls). Allied Chair Two: The USSR (and Mongolia) in the North, a country not at war with the Japanese when the game starts. It is active in order to control its economy, construction and deployment. Also this player negotiates with the Allies about cooperation and coordination, with a view to jealously guarding the sovereignty of Soviet territory, preventing Japanese invasions and generally not permitting Allied bases, or if needed, limiting them as severely as possible to peripheral places the USSR is unable to defend or support on its own. Being active, the Soviet Red Fleet is able to move, and to supply outlaying bases, but must do so with "agreements" so there is no conflict with Japan. In the South, Chair Two controls Australia, SW Pacific Command, NEI, USAFFE and USN Asiatic Fleet. This player also controls communist guerillas and forces. RHS has a number of these, mostly appearing over time, from major Kim Il Song's small unit near Korea, through the Viet Ming units in Indochina as far South as the major outlieing islands of NEI (Borneo, Sumatra, New Guinea). There are already communist formations in China when the game begins. Chair Two may be called the Central Chair. This player also controls Off Map Soviet Union. Allied Chair Three: This is the UK & Commonwealth in general: China-India-Burma theater, Malaya, Canada, Indian Ocean Islands - as well as Alaska Command (land only). Chair Three may also be called the Western Chair. Since Free French forces in general operated with the Commonwealth, Chair Three controls Free French units, and nominally also Vichy French locations as well as being technically sovereign over New Caledonia and French Polynesia. [That is fuzzy - but means more or less that the French player can boss the US player in the South Pacific re these locations] One Vichy French unit exits in Indochina because it eventually joined the Allies after a falling out with Japan, marching all the way to China. This unit, a Foreign Legion brigade, is nominally supposed to remain at its base in Viet Tri (just North of Hanoi) unless Japan attacks it. Its "rear" is somewhat covered by a static, communist, Viet Ming unit - the Provisional Government of Northern Tonkin (technically controlled by Chair Two - but a static unit needs few orders). Chair Three controls all Allied units in its area, even if US forces, as well as Off Map UK, Off Map Eastern Canada (Quebec), Off Map Midwest Canada (Ontario), Off Map Recife (Brazil), Off Map South Africa, Off Map Mombasa (Kenya), Off Map Aden and Off Map Iran (a dual location connected in RHS by RR to Off Map Soviet Union - at least after the first season - when the RR is completed).

Even so, I released virtually ALL the pilots code permitted - and in some cases was unable to refill them with cadets - so I need to wait for more. Some training units are not at full size. Others have not even formed yet. The capacity of these units is not enough to meet the requirements of the war - unless losses are very light. And while most training units are present, not all are. The basic pilot pools are, however, adjusted to account for the pilots in the training units - scenarios with even numbers have no such units and have smaller total pilots. Onoe of the possible uses for a training unit is to disband it - and release all its pilots to the pools. The other function is to build experience. This works remarkably well - and each unit tells you if you can "release" pilots - and how many (if less than 10; for more than 10 you will continue to get "release pilots" numbers greater than 0).

This location - all three hexes - is key to control of Central China. Also, ocean ships are built here, and ANY ship can sail all the way to Hankow/Wuhan from the sea. The area is also at the end (or beginning) of the Yangtze Gorge - modeled by blocked hexsides - on the river NW from here. From this point on, only shallow draft ships may pass.

In RHS there are several Thai adacemy units - battalions or company size - which help the Royal Thai Army resist the Japanese invasion on the first day.

RHS has greatly increased the detail in the Philippines. There are more locations, more units, more ships and more industries to manage. A long defense means more units have time to form up, and more local supplies will be generated - in both cases in hexes the enemy is NOT in. In this demonsration game I will try to show WHY the US Army wanted lots of small supply vessels and patrol craft? Also WHY I think defense should be strong places other than (disease ridden) Bataan. To be sure, Bataan matters. To that end, I am using short range transports to reinforce its supply depots. I also am using it as a patrol base for PBYs - since it won't be part of the storm on the more important airfields on turn one. A Philippine ground support detachment is moving in to support the PBYs - Clark will go down anyway - so it won't be needed there. Bataan's big guns close Manila Bay. Mines there are hard to sweep too - covered by the guns. Here are most of the heavy guns of the Manila Bay defenses - including Fort Drum and Corregedor. But what kills Bataan is a lack of supply for all the units that fall back there. More supply and fewer units are an asset - not a liability. Farther North, Baguio City matters - never mind it is omitted from stock and almost every mod. It is in the mountains = good defensive terrain. It has an airfield - so I base recon planes there - set to search 360 - to track enemy invasion groups. I also fly in a good regiment of Scouts - to insure any airborne attack dies a nasty death. [It has the Fort John Hay Column unit already - more or less the Philippine Military Academy writ large - which went mobile and never did surrender] Other units are headed North to contest San Fernando - and those that get there will try to fall back up the Naguilian Road to Baguio City rather than back down Route 1. Other units move due East from Clark to build up the auxiliary airfield in the interior - and support planes there. These units will also try to "fall back" (forward?) to Baguio. It is mineral rich and supply rich and has no disease. I don't like giving up Manila easily - it ended up the most destroyed city in Asia anyway - so the open city concept failed IRL. Manila will - if screened - generate supply and be a good air base. It is a great port but dangerous to ships because the enemy can bomb them and likely will. So I scatter its ships and subs to all sorts of other bases - except for those trying to move supplies to Bataan. Ships moving to bases are set to auto-disband when they arrive - so they become immune to air strikes set to attack TFs the moment they disband. Ships are sent to many places with many missions. Submarines are offensive as well as defensive. Six very long range subs are headed for Japan - and based is set to Cold Bay - I am giving them to Chair 1 to manage (traded for six S boats on the West Coast which are better used in SE Asia). Small transports will move supplies or resources from all sorts of places to my hubs that support defenses. Large transports are trying to reach NEI to get supplies or be used there. Patrol vessels are headed to contest the invasion beaches - slowing down the enemy by stealing operations points and risking depleting his subs of gun ammo. Support ships and good warships are headed to my alternate fleet base - which also is covered with fighters - and my subs are all home ported there. Fighters are on mutual defense of Clark and Manila - at altitudes optimized by plane type - to oppose enemy bombers or fighters - depending. Patrol planes are looking North to suppliment other naval searches to set up bombers. The B-17s are set to cover the entire area as a single force from Mindinao in a position that will be defended land, air and sea. IF Mindinao holds for a while, lots of units arrive (are formed) on it. NEI patrol bases also cover the Southern Philippines to set up bomber attacks.

There is an RHS feature which may make Allied strategy in the Philippines and in NEI, and a host of smaller places, easier to understand: the RHS pwhex file set permits movement (where this is possible) between islands, between major land bodies and islands, and in appropriate places and season, along major rivers (navigable or otherwise). This pwhex file set ( set because there are 19 different named files each of which can be the current pwhexe.dat file in use - one for each season from Winter 1941 until Summer 1946 ) may be used in stock scenarios OR in any mod that uses the stock map system. Pwhex files can be changes at any time during a game. The reason there is a different file for identical seasons in different years is the road and RR construction is included in the files - for both sides - everywhere. But originally the idea was to permit use in the Philippines and NEI in particular, so restricte units - which in AE may FLY to places inside the command - also may MARCH to places inside the command. It was particularly frustrating that USAFFE and NEI, both with gigantic fleets of vessels to move between islands, were "stuck" on whatever island and could not go where anyone could go. Also that supply would not go where it normally would go. So we connected the major crossing points with trails. We call those trails "ferries." In a few places - and following the rarely used example of stock - we also used secondary roads: these are called "high capacity ferries." [Shikoku connects to Honshu using this mechanism - in stock, RHS and virtually all mods] Where either kind of ferries is used, small amounts of supply will also cross. But what if the crossing points were involved in a battle? We decided to define the hexside as a navigable river - so a crossing would involve the normal river crossing penalty (forced shock attack; also whatever movement code applies to river crossing). Then we said - what if the crossing is possible geographically but there is no developed ferry system (docks, vessels, services)? So we defined other crossings as navigable rivers (or even as major rivers) - permitting crossing without any trail or road - as anywhere inland there is a river. It still permits a land unit to move - with no bonus - but is unfriendly to supply - treated as overland - but still not a total barrier to supply. This system is used between lots of islands in other places - as far away as Tahiti - and is supplimented on river systems seasonally by trails representing water barges and rafts (where in significant commercial service) and, in winter, representing ice trails used by dog sleds - in the cold Northern region. Or even rarely by secondary roads representing winter ice roads. There is an important one in Northern Canada, and even more important across Lake Baikal ('the North Sea' in Chinese). Note that in spring in the north the "breakup season" means neither water navigation nor ice trails are possible. Navigable rivers, or other rivers with trails representing slow barge/raft traffic (the most important is the Lena North and East of Lake Baikal), and all ice trails and ice roads are simply major (or minor) rivers - and there is none of this stuff. [Similarly in the Monsoon area, sometimes there is more - or in Northern Burma LESS - river navigation when there is more water flowing - in Burma's case because the fast water down gorges renders any passage imposible] It is possible to "march" from the Southern tip of Mindinao to Northern Luzon. Or from the NW tip of sumatra to the Eastern top of Flores, down the main NEI chain. And between many other points in NEI or the Philippines which are isolated from these large systems It isn't fast and it isn't supply efficient - but total "you can never get there from here" and "no supplies ever make the crossing" isn't the case. And note that all such cases involve the problem of the river crossing penalty if part of a fight.

I have a child who is Filipino (although her grandfather was Chinese, he was a WWII war hero in the Philippine Army as a scout - and there is a monument to his memory in a remote village 8 km from Naguilian on the Naguilian road - down which both Japanese and US Philippine units both marched on offensives in 1941 and 1945 - en route to Baguio City). Aside from be advance home ported in the Philippines, I travel there every couple of years, and participated in 50th anniversery celebrations (and landings) at Leyte Gulf and Linguyan Gulf. I collect maps of the country, including unpublished maps from the Fort John Hay military museum (home of the Philippine Military Academy, and while not yet built - it existed in 1941 - holding classes at Teacher's Camp in Baguio City; like all military academies in wartime, it converted into an infantry column and spent the duration under arms). In RHS Cebu is an important port, complete with shipyard, and it connects to nearby islands which feed resources, and some supplies into it. Tacloban is the third most important port - with a rump airfield extant in 1941 which can be built up. The unusual RR system of interconnected minor gage sugar cane railways on Panay exists. And a host of other relatively unknown development exists. Similarly, in NEI, you will find developed remote locations. The "rich Moluccas" are not just islands - they produce stuff. Rubber plantations exist throughout SE Asia - where they exist - using the former "oil" device renamed "oilwell/rubber plantation" - and if it is a pain to collect the tiny amounts of oil - some places automatically feet into larger logistic systems - and ships can move it from small ones if you like ( or not - representing abandoned or isolated plantations no longer participating in the economy ). Each loation on the map is evaluated for what is there - and what it produces is there - unless it really produces nothing at all. There are few "roads to nowhere" or "rail lines to nowhere" in RHS - if an economic reason the road was built exists - you will see it. Some places have notes in the name like 'gold field' or 'mica field' - telling you what kind of resource is from there?

The Allied Tag Team start turn (a massive effort due to the need to manage aircraft production, twice as many locations, and increased numbers of units) has been handed over to the Chair 3 player: he deals with CBI, Canada plus Alaska Command. China is already done. The Allies have a shocking "desert" of military power through most of the SRA. Knowledge this was the case was obtained, unintentionally, by a German raider captain who intercepted HMS Andromedon which had a report by the governor of Malaya (absent in UK) on the subject. Suspending raider operations, the captain (a future commander of the German Navy in the post war era) sailed for Japan on a captured Norewgian prize ship, and after obtaining permission via Russian postal telegraph (evading MAGIC radio intercepts), handed the report over to Japan - with an account of how its armed escort had been killed. In spite of knowing this was the case, I remain in shock at the dirth of forces in area - after nearly half a year of tensions (Japan mobilized in July, 1941). Even so, I intend to attempt to demonstrate the value of an offensive-defensive, vice the traditional run and hole up in bastion strategy popular among Matrix players. The Allies are persuing a comprehensive strategy of do everything possible to slow down the coming storm - even stealing by various means supplies, fuel, resources or oil that otherwise would fall into enemy hands. Provided reinforcements are sent by Chair 1 (USA) and Chair 3 (UK/CW), I am confident Chair 2 (Center position - Philippines, NEI, AUS) can hold better than the enemy would prefer. To facilitate reinforcements and supply/fuel imports, I have sent all the long range transports out of area, a majority of the tonnage that starts - so both Chair 1 and Chair 3 will get more ships from me than from reinforcements in the early game period. This also means I won't lose these big ships to enemy action by using them (improperly) in forward areas. They belong on the SLOC.

I was right only about one thing: it would be an unusual and exciting first turn. It is full of surprises, large and small. USS Wake and HMS Peteral, which have so little chance they are excluded from other mods, not only survive (undamaged I think), but both managed to dish it out. Of 5 RN warships (3 DD and 2 RGB) at Hong Kong - all of which historically escaped to Singapore - 4 were lucky and one was not. The Advance Force (that is the Japanese submarines near Hawaii) repeatedly scored, in line with Japanese historical expectations, but took little damage - never mind it looks like most of them were ordered to leave the area and were unable to participate in the battle. If they all form a cloud around Oahu, the damaged United States Fleet may suffer terribly, more than it has already. Lots of air strikes didn't happen too, on both sides - possibly due to weather or event sequencing. The biggest surprise is the impact of "operations points stealing" - slowing down both Japanese invasion groups and US surface groups - preventing them from reaching as far as normal. With six heavy and medium task forces at sea near Oahu in adjacent hexes, set to react, I expected a whole series of surface battles: only one happened. With lots of surface task forces at sea in the South China Sea , I expected Force Z to escape altogether, or at least to be hit only once and not too badly mauled. I was wrong - the Japanese used long range recon in combination with long range torpedo bombers like artists. Even fighter cover didn't daunt them. I was also wrong about the Japanese password. It has changed back to the original RHS105T6 The Allied password remains as was TEST6A2 Both sides turns and replay are available on the RHS mailing list. Operational commanders (only) do not look at the wrong side turn. I will shut up now - but I think this is a very interesting situation - only started - and I hope to see how it develops over time. There is a common practice among Matrix players to severely restrict Allied movement BEYOND what code does on the first turn, especially at Pearl Harbor. RHS does NOT do that. The reasoning follows here: Game Start: Matrix Options and RHS Mod Elections: 1) Option one, REJECTED: Force the historical start of the war. Base RHS on stock scenario six. This freezes the game results for turn one, defining them from history. No die rolls, no variables, you start with what survived the opening battles. There is considerable historical merit to such a start. Also some practical merit - stock is so broken re aircraft durability that Mifune found it almost tolerable to start this way - at least the Allies lost the right number of planes on the first day! But he found it better to use RHS concepts for plane durability, and AAA values, so the results are closer to right for the whole game. 2) Option two, REJECTED: Start the game without Dec 7 Surprise. This means both sides start even, like any other day. No special effects at all. Clearly events on the first day were NOT like any other. The raid on Clark was the most effective bombing raid of the entire war. Never mind the bombers came in above the heavy AAA - at about 24,000 feet - they hit better than low level bombers did on either side on any other day - due to intensive rehearsal. Allied AAA was uniformly dismal - and when it did shoot - more dangerous to Allied planes than to the enemy! We believe the special effects in the Dec 7 Surprise option are, if unpleasant for the Allies, both reasonable and fair. 3) Option three: ACCEPTED: Start the game WITH Dec 7 Surprise. This means Japanese Task Forces get a movement bonus. At the same time, Allied Task Forces are penalized by losing one of two movement impulses. They are simply slow to form up - and in effect lose 12 hours steaming time. Much of that is reasonable simply because boilers need time to warm up, and crews need time to be recalled. JAPAN knows the war is going to start for sure long before it does - THEIR ships are at sea or ready for sea in a fundamentally different sense than the Allies are. There are also other penalties to die rolls of all kinds, making Japanese attacks more effective, and Allied attacks less so. Again, we think that is reasonable and a fair simulation of history. 4) Standard House Rule option: REJECTED: Most gamers using stock or other mods have a player agreement or "house rule" forcing the Allies to stay in port on the first turn. Often universally. Some even go farther, and forbid other kinds of orders. RHS delegates the decision from the design level to he player level: we PERMIT a player to ELECT to give no orders IF AND WHERE he believes the historical commander would certainly do that. But as designers we do NOT force this on players. Our design intent is to create uncertainty, a wider range of outcomes, and a more interesting campaign. We believe that there is inherently too much knowledge on the first day to begin with, and that players have too much 20-20 hindsight. So we deliberately give SOME power to the players in this matter. Option three bounds it - a hard code Matrix designed set of penalties for the Allies and bonuses for the Japanese. WITHIN that - we further restrict the player with our Primary RHS House Rule: A player is NEVER to give an order he believes, personally, is not one an operational commander would give. Special case: a player is not allowed to give an order he knows is not physically possible. [For example, it is forbidden to order a RR unit to move not along a rail line - although if it retreated off one - it can move directly back to one] This is considered a real restriction, but also one with uncertainty inherent in it: you never know for sure the opinion of the other player what is "realistic" in every case. So you are forced to consider there are at least possibilities. We think that is more like real life than hard rules are. Be prepared. IRL Kiddo Butai had five different attack contingencies it was prepared for: 1) All ships, including carriers, are at sea and operating in tactical cooperation, with air cover and supporting land air strikes 2) All ships, including carriers, are in port, and surprise is NOT achieved - so there is CAP and manned AAA at the target 3) All ships, including carriers, are in port, and surprise IS achieved - so there is NO CAP or manned AAA at the target 4) Only the main fleet, sans carriers, are in port, and surprise is NOT achieved - so there is CAP and manned AAA at the target 5) Only the main fleet, sans carriers, are in port, and surprise IS achieved - so there is NO CAP or manned AAA at the target [historical case] There had been no recon or reports in several days - since the last liner left with two Kempetai officers from the Navy section - so it was possible ships had left port. In the event both Carrier TFs had done so. Note: ENTERPRISE TF IS in range of KB for most positions from which it can attack Oahu. A Japanese commander who does not set any planes to engage a naval target at sea risks giving Enterprise a "free" air strike without reply in kind. Even under the common house rule ships cannot leave Oahu does not change that KB should be set to engage ships at sea.
