I know there are quite a number of ship sets out there. My question is, do these just add graphics (as the descriptions tend to imply) or do they actually design new ship load outs etc? If they do not create new load outs, why not, and are there any files that do? If they do, then how good are the different load outs and can you remove the load out from the graphics? I find the ship/station customization confusing at best. I don't have any clear idea of what the added effects are of a one increment increase in say a trading station, or lab. If I keep gaining benefits at a 1:1 ratio then why not just make my starting station into a MEGA station, let it take say 3 years to build and then invent all the tech and become rich.

Ship sets are just a set of bitmaps or graphics in other words.
They have nothing to do with loadouts. You create loadouts for each and every ship yourself depending on the technology you have researched.

What ship sets do, is give you an alternate graphic presentation for a given ship.
For example; add Star Wars themed ships into the game.

They are usually a set for a race, so these Star Wars ships will replace the stock human ships (to continue with the example)and be pitted against the other stock ships included with the game.

has anyone made any ready-made load outs?

Though not on the exact subject of the question... Drawing on my own experience and observations, some ship sets/mods do, indeed, affect the game's overall fps since certain ships have some finer image detail and are obviously quite pretty to look at. Man, I wish there were some complete groovy ship mods out there. Various complete sets for all races. But then again, I play DW not for its graphics. Does anyone really.... [;)]
