rms1pa -> minor victory (7/8/2012 8:26:34 PM)

hi folks,
playing allies/AI at easy setting 8/19/42,
one third of ijn cv/cvl/cve's are reported as sunk, half the bb's/ca/cl's. and a quarter of the escort vessels.

while i know some of this is FOW the lack of encounters and the seeming lack of skill of bettys/nells is tempting me to raid Truk looking for the IJN. i still have all my carriers and the airgroups have recovered from my 4/14/42 drought of cv aircraft.

or i could take my victory and start again at a harder setting.

advice?comments?

rms/pa

For the stock scenarios, balanced play is on difficulty setting HARD.  Anything lower and the AI is penalized.  On VERY HARD the AI gets some bonuses against the player.

If this is your first go at it, wrap it up and take your lessons learned into a tougher match!

so if i think i have a reasonable grasp of the rules now i should start at HARD?

two words

play pbem

learn through pain and loss, but don't quit

it's poor etiquitte to lose a few carriers and quit a game

Maybe the more experienced players can comment, but if memory serves that minor victory can go away if you screw up. I know you sunk a lot of ships but you haven't taken any territory that you mention. I would play on. The experience you gain actually invading enemy territory will be invaluable in a PBEM game.

So Far I am only playing against the AI so I have no PBEM experience.

If you haven't already, play some fo the shorter scenarios. Guadacanal scenario is a VERY good short scenario. Play that first as allies, then as IJ.

i'm gonna agree w/ the Duck, it might be worthwhile to play on awhile to get some purely land combat experience (CBI theater) and/or to mount a major amph assault, say against Guadalcanal. your 8/42 timeframe means you'll be kinda bare-bones in the amph-warfare department, you won't have any of the Allied toys such as AGCs or APAs, & will be hard-pressed to find even a PT-boat!

thanks all,

i did take lunga/tulgi/tass. national guard to tass, loose usmc reg + raiders and paras to tulgi and everything else(2 mardivs+) to lunga. base forces engineers and port units all round. with 3X2 CV task forces about . landing in 7/29/42

ijn response was minimal. all cleared by 8/2/42

prep was 100 for almost all units. i had been shuttle bombarding with the slow BBs for a month prior+b17/24s. those TFs had eaten a handful of CL/TB/E TFs+assorted xAK/AKL and a CS!

I agree that is time for you to find a human player and start an email game. The AI is good practice but if you play solely against the computer you will develop bad habits and make a lot of false assumptions. There are a lot of new players on the boards these days. Advertise for a rookie opponent for a short scenario and go at it...You will never look back..[8D]
