Linky to the USNI memorial on him. Ernest Borgine or to most of us of a certain age LCDR Quinton McHale passed away today at the age of 95. Earnest Borgine was an actual US Navy veteran, he enlisted in 1935 and served through out WW2 as a Gunners Mate primarly on the USS Lamberton, DD-119; device 4323 according to the editor of the stock SCN1. The Lamberton was escorting the USS Minneapolis from Pearl to Oahu gun ranges on 7Dec, after that the Lamberton was esocrting ships in and around the fleet anchorages. After that she went to escort convoys during the Aluetians operations from 1942 till 1943 and then finished out her career as a target tow out of either San Diego, Mare Island or Pearl Harbor. At the end of the war she operated as a training auxillary until sold in Bermerton for scrap in 1946. After leaving the Navy in 1946, Borgine went home to Connecticut and tried out for stage plays there, which lead to some plays in Virginia and then finally to Broadway in NYC as a Nurse during the run of Harvey. Going to LA he landed a big break playing the stockade SGT in "From Here to Eternity" and that lead to McHale, Marty, and slew of other Film/TV roles.
