pharmy -> Japanese NF airsearchradar- only the FD-2? (7/12/2012 9:53:14 AM)

I noticed that out of all the Japanese radars only the FD-2 has an airsearch mode - is this correct? Did the N-6 and H-6 really only have surface modes? If this is the case there is not much point (maybe just to avoid op losses) in using any Japanese night figher, or at least using them effectively till the the FD-2 equipped Denko and Randy C are available. This would account also for the ineffectiveness of the earlier NFs (even the N-6 or H-6 equipped ones)

Edit: http://www.fischer-tropsch.org/primary_documents/gvt_reports/USNAVY/USNTMJ%20Reports/USNTMJ-200B-0112-0146%20Report%20E-02.pdf

Ok, I found the basic US evaluation of the radars, but have no idea what differentiated the search modes

Don't hold your breath. I have seen no difference between radar equipped night fighters and fighters without radar and I have lots of high exp night fighter units. Never have I seen them do much at all. However, you can just put up any fighter unit on night CAP and even though you will rarely shoot down a bomber, the mere presence of any fighter unit seems to drastically reduce the severity of the bombing attack. Many bombers will turn away due to lack of escort.

My point is, don't waste too much energy fretting over your night fighters.

night air combat :

- night fighters very innacurate

- rear gunners very ACCURATE

reducing the accuracy of rear gunners (and the ridiculous lossses they inflict on night fighters)
would go a long way to fixing the night air model

thanks, I went from waiting for the H-6 and N-6 to help out, to realizing that even a dedicated air search radar fighter isn't worth the wait. I'll guess I'll go back to playing the Luftwaffe in bombing the reich to get some satisfaction :)

Did just read a book about the most, almost only, effective tactic used by the Japanese- ramming the B-29s. Is this simulated in witp ae?

Yes.

4 October 1942:
CHITOSE's PO (later WO) Katsuki Kiyomi, flying combat air patrol over the fleet in a F1M2 Pete, spots four enemy fighters and five B-17s. To prevent the bombers from hitting the seaplane carrier NISSHIN, Katsuki dives on the leading B-17E of the 72nd Bomb Squadron. He rams the bomber from below, tearing the right main wing and the vertical stabilizer off the B-17 and damaging the Pete’s right wing. Katsuki and his observer bale out. Destroyer AKITSUKI rescues both. The B-17’s crew is lost. [4]

AE message

*F1M rams B-17

*Lt Katsuki bails out and is Rescued!

ramming would a nice detail to lnclude [:D]

but woe if a 90 exp A6M pilot rams a Vildebeest [:(]

I did search for it, but there was no definite answer, only on ship ramming which I knew

And I'm guessing all units will try, or do they have to be specialized (or is a morale based check?)

IIRC, air search radar wasn't working until one of the later beta patches ... I haven't really tested it since to determine its effectiveness.

Banzan -> RE: Japanese NF airsearchradar- only the FD-2? (7/13/2012 8:59:54 AM)

There is actually some "xxx goes Banzai" (sp?) message, when a damaged/wounded japanese fighter decides to ram a bomber. Lost too many precious 4Es in '42, early '43 to that already.

Perhaps, but your 4Es and crews are easily replaceable, the IJN/IJA fighter pilots are not.

Correct. This is post #1038 dated 4 November 2011 from michaelm in the massive beta thread found in the Tech sub-forum. Whilst it arose from a ground radar issue involving night fighters it nonetheless has value for aircraft only.

One thing I have found is that airborne search radar is not being checked before the planes are spotted, but is used in the actual plane-to-plane combat.
Logically, if planes have no radar and no detection from the ground, then actual interception should be less likely.
The reason I noticed this is that there is a slot to record the air radar device of the defenders, but in the few night combats in this save, there was no value stored there.

I have added a simple check for radar in the CAP or raid being detected in this build. It should lower the odds that CAP without some radar assistance will engage raid. NF or a/c with air radar should do better at intercepting raids than those without.

Feedback appreciated.

I don't think michaelm received any negative feedback.[:)]

Alfred
