Commander Stormwolf -> THE NEW AC PRODUCTION SYSTEM ~ REVEALED (7/14/2012 7:08:04 PM)

Greetings AE community, taken from 1 month in a Pbem game

separate aluminum HI points for AC, and expansion limits

(so you cannot cancel ships in the normal cartoon production system)

now we ask ~ how to find the japanese aluminum production?

that is a simple one. take the total HI generated for that month and divide by 50

so at the start of the war, with 6950 HI centers you generate 8340 tons per month

now we ask ~ where did you get these number from?

we need to look at 2 things:

1) annual japanese aluminum production as it was historically
2) japanese stockpiles of bauxite in Dec 1941

okay ~ buy didn't the japanese expand their aluminum production during the war?
and wouldn't their prewar stockpile last a long time anyway?

a) it expanded just slightly (by about 25%), and it corresponds to the capture/expansion of HI centers the player can make

b) it takes 4 tons of bauxite to make 1 ton of aluminum - so it would last them about 9 months, the same as their oil stockpile
so once japan ran out of oil, they would also run out of bauxite at about the same time

WHY DO I, THE AE PLAYER CARE about this idea of separate HI points for ac, and separate points for ships ?

it is the fundamental principle that governed the primary aspect of the pacific war (the relation between japanese airpower and seapower, and their capacity against the allies)

in the current form: the japanese player can cancel any ships they don't want (like the landing craft, merchtants, or the carrier shinano) and use those HI points
to make fighters

it means the japanese player can go on fighting for a long time, even after a successful blockade by the allies

it also means the japanese player can build vast quantities of planes and treat them lightly (oh .. i'll just build more betties, they only cost me 72 HI points each)

in reality, each plane lost to japan was a tragedy

you couldn't make zeroes or betties from steel

I'll be testing the aluminum house rule as the pbem game progresses, already it seems like a major imporvement to the production model

i hope it will be included in a future version of AE (the greatest pacwar Sim ever made), and not be limited to small games like PTO IV [:)]

House Stark -> RE: THE NEW AC PRODUCTION SYSTEM ~ REVEALED (7/24/2012 4:55:59 PM)

Wow, you've certainly put a lot of effort into this. I think I'll pass though; I have enough to keep track of in this game without additional Aluminum spreadsheets. My solution to the problem is to play JuanG's enhanced naval mods, and other similar mods that add so many ships to the construction queue that the Japanese player can't finish his naval builds in mid 1944 and devote the rest of his HI to plane construction. Because really, this wouldn't be so much of an issue if Japan had to maintain shipbuilding throughout the course of the war to finish its builds, and if it had incentive to do so. The ability of roads to allow significant fuel/oil/resource transport also is a problem since it reduces the need of merchants for Japan, allowing the player to halt merchant construction and build planes.

"mod" announcements should ideally, be posted in the Scenario Design and Modding sub-forum. That's what it was created for.

i guess calling it a house rule is more accurate

sort of like using tracker / decoder
