Titan -> Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/21/2012 10:35:27 PM)

Summer 42 is appraoching and i can now build them, How do you use them.

Flaviusx -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/21/2012 11:29:31 PM)

They can fire from two hexes away. It's usually best not attack with artillery by itself, but rather combine them with other units that can take and hold ground.

Titan -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/21/2012 11:32:19 PM)

thanks

hfarrish -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/22/2012 5:48:34 PM)

Two hexes excluding the target or two hexes including the target? I assume the latter but just to be clear...

Scook_99 -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/22/2012 8:01:28 PM)

The artillery can sit behind the attacking units (one hex), so I am thinking that means inclusive, hfarrish.

Titan -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/22/2012 9:46:54 PM)

Do they automaticllly add there firepower or do you need to select them

Scook_99 -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/23/2012 3:29:02 AM)

You need to select them if they are not adjacent, so you will mainly use them in deliberate attacks. To do a hasty, they have to be adjacent to the defender so can can use that stack, and that's generally not a healthy place for artillery divisions.

vinnie71 -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/23/2012 9:06:24 AM)

Do the same rules apply for brigade groups? I mean the light howitzer or gun brigades  etc or do these go in the front lines?

So basically if I'm understanding it the mechanism well, one puts them behind the attack front and highlights them in a deliberate attack. Or does it happen automatically that they support such attacks?

76mm -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/23/2012 9:20:13 AM)

YOu need to highlight them yourself.

randallw -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/23/2012 10:01:11 AM)

The same rules apply to the arty brigades, yes.

hfarrish -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/25/2012 8:14:51 PM)

What is the impact of placing Arty brigades in reserve status? Do they support attacks / defenses in the same way as a regular unit on reserve? Do they move into range to fire?

Aurelian -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/26/2012 12:48:49 AM)

I *think* they would move into the hex. Which is not a good place to be. I've never put arty units in reserve.

kg_1007 -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/26/2012 2:23:05 AM)

This brings a question to mind..I have tried to duplicate from both sides, and unable thus far.
In the manual it states that you can actually have artillery duels where only artillery is involved from 2 hex range as noted here..Now, I see how to do the Soviet side, but it does not seem the Axis side can(no artillery divisions, and all artillery attached to Corps HQ which cannot attack alone), so still not sure how you can have a battle involving only artillery firing at each other. Does anyone know this?

hfarrish -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/26/2012 2:41:09 AM)

Related Q - do Arty divisions automatically support the defense of in-range sectors, or do they need to be in reserve mode to do so?

hfarrish -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/26/2012 2:42:05 AM)

I don't know the answer, but given the week-long turns it seems like artillery duels would be pretty weird. Maybe if the game ever moves to WITP one day turns...(not arguing for this!).

kg_1007 -> RE: Soviet Artillery Divisions (7/27/2012 2:21:34 PM)

It does seem just as unlikely for ONE side to spend the one week turns hitting its opponent safely from 2 hexes, if the other side cannot return fire, also though..
One day turns would be somewhat fun, for a few days here, but wow..what a monster game the entire war would be..it would probably take roughly its historic time period, to play it out.

This refers to attacks made by artillery from 2 hexes without participating ground units. Only the artillery elements in the defending units will fire so you get an artillery duel (although the defending unit does not have to be an artillery unit).

Ah! Thank you, Joel. I have spent ALOT of hours trying to get this to work, should have asked that earlier. As Axis artillery units are always attached to a HQ, then, this would apply for Soviet Artillery Divisions attacking Axis Corps or Army HQ?
