Okay, the answer to my question is probably in the manual, but I just looked throught it (probably too quickly) and couldn't find anything. So here goes.

If I want to assign a minesweeping TF a mission that will sweep mines from a particular target hex (and the six surrounding hexes), do I use "set destination" or "set patrol"? Or doesn't it matter?

Also, does it work the same way for local minesweeping?

Set destination definitely works..

Dunno about the patrol option though... that could be an interesting alternative for preventing enemy sabotage for example. [:-]

Set Destination. A minesweeping TF is ordered to sweep it's destination. It may also sweep some mines in hexes it passes through enroute to the destination, but that is incidental.

Thanks Don.

Now I can get down to clearing mines from Hong Kong and Palembang.

Make sure there are no CD guns there before you do that, otherwise they will fire at your minesweepers....

Yeah, I've learned that lesson the hard way . . . . a few times. I guess I'm not the quickest of learners. [:(]

Remember, local minesweepers only clear the hex they are in, not those adjacent to the destination hex. I've never used "patrol" for a minesweeping operation, so I too would be interested in the answer. Hal

On a related note - does anyone else like the idea of local minesweepers' ability to ONLY clear one hex at a time? Sometimes (actually most of the time), you just want to clear a single hex. You don't want to bother clearing the six surrounding hexes, especially considering the fact that you will be exposed to more enemy threats that way (CD guns, SCTFs etc).

Anyone else in agreement?

I use my AMcs to patrol between harbours with ship traffic. Keeps the mines away. [:)]

i'd like it a lot more, if i could add AM & DM/DMS types to a LocalMSW TF.

Given the size of ship the coastal minesweepers represent, I think it realistic to say they only sweep one hex.. remember that 42 NAUTICAL miles across. That's a lot of area... Hal

Set Destination. A minesweeping TF is ordered to sweep it's destination. It may also sweep some mines in hexes it passes through enroute to the destination, but that is incidental.

I've also found setting 'Remain on Station' helps with it, so you get two 'sweeps' per turn (AM and PM move phases). At least I think this is how it works. [:)]

KPAX -> RE: Minesweeping Mechanics (8/9/2012 7:22:43 PM)

/And you get so many local Minesweepers as Allies, just set up a few in each port you need sweeped and it seems good to me.

This is my method as well. I also make sure that the "home base" is not the same as the destination. I have found that mines sometimes do not get swept if the 2 are the same.

Chris21wen -> RE: Minesweeping Mechanics (8/11/2012 8:42:28 AM)

I've been setting sweeps of homebases simply by creating a TF in the base but not giving it any destination (it's takes the homebase) and not telling it to undock.   Somewhere I read that this works.   From this thread it seems it may not
