panzerfist -> birds of prey (1/23/2001 12:46:00 PM)

i know this has been covered - it has to have been. - and so the sun slid down on a frozen world littered with the skeletons of humans and metal beasts alike. smoke filtered into the darkening sky as thousands of tired, bloodhot eyes burned into the creeping darkness for a glimpse of a shift from the other side. it hadnt been long since the stukas had been called; they were a bit more sluggish than usual, but a stuka late was better than a stuka never. eyes close to the mammoth tiger ii tank looked upon it with increasing frequency. just the sight of this indestructable tracked monster leant some amount of reassurance. finally, off in the forever of darkness it came. screaming bloody rage, fighting the wind and succumbing to the heavy pull of gravity - every soldier on the field knew the howl of the stuka. german eyes peered into the sky searching for the pinprick that would pound their enemy into submission and perhaps buy them a small amount of gain. like an irate banshee, the howl grew louder, the pinprick grew wings. Somethings wrong! the stuka was diving to far south - right over enemy positions! someone yelled something but his warning was drowned by the fury of the great engine. soon the diving howl was joined by another, a higher pitched whine. the engines roared thunderous as the stuka swooped low over the heads of running german soldiers - a glimpse of the small load it'd dropped wobbling in the air but constant on a course of destruction. FWATHOOM!! a new sun was borne with a deafening explosion. shadows danced across the infinite whiteness and all seemed frozen for a split second under this new, inescapable spotlight. a soldier flung himself to the ground as pieces of metal zipped by his bandaged head missing it only by an inch. another was flung to the earth by a will that was not his own. the bandaged soldier unburied his face from the snow. his eyes burned with blindess and in his ears he could hear the same thumping explosion over and over again. he looked behind him, his vision slowly coming around. the bright blur to his rear sharpened, the light becoming a fire. its base, the twisted form of the tiger ii. weary, he dropped his face back into the snow and wondered how, with an enemy as numerous as his russian foe, the stukas could bomb their own tanks? - ok, the short version: how can you keep your bombers from blowing the hell out of your own tanks? i cant count how many times my planes have come on the map only to bomb my own units? thanks for letting me vent p/f/

To a certain extent, you can't. A pilot determined to be stupid will be. Still, there are some steps you can take... First, try to make sure the bomber never flies over your position. Route him on at an angle behind the enemy, and have him veer off towards the enemy rear to leave. If needs must, fly him straight from the enemy rear; but make sure he leaves off the side of the map. Next, watch out for smoke. Try to arrange an attack run that doesn't pass over any, and that can see the enemy from a long way away. This makes it more likely that the AI pilot will spot the target and bomb it; or at least spot something nearby rather than you. Finally, hide your armor. If you have to call in an airstrike that probably won't find the enemy, do your best to keep him from finding you. Hide your tanks in the woods, preferably behind smoke. If you've done all this and you still got nailed, then all you can do is grumble and recognize that it really happened from time to time. Airplanes can be deadlier than tube arty; but the do make mistakes too.

Airplanes always seem to go for tanks and other vehicles, no matter if they are friendly or enemy.. so if there are no enemy vehicles around (plenty of enemy infantry doesn't count) prepare for friendly fire or don't call in the air strike Lots of smoke on the map naturally gives the opportunity for even more mistakes..

have you considered the obvious solution.. hack into the game with the editor and give the AI lots of aircraft ???
