ool -> Soviet Air force (7/27/2012 6:57:16 PM)

It is mid May 42. The Soviet air force has recovered. Experience of the air units is around the 60-70 level. Morale is usually 65-80. Airbases are four to eight hexes from the nearest Axis units. Problem is they won't fly! I try to fly recon and get air unavailable or out of range. They aren't that far away and haven't flown this turn. Bombing of units and air interdiction isn't happening at all. Forget getting any air ground support. Anybody help me out as to why the red air force is sitting the war out at this point in the conflict? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/solutions.

I would say play with the air table some..also, for some reason, bombing of ground units generally is only allowed at the beginning of a turn..that one I still don't get, but, it is a rule, so have to deal with it.

What are ur settings air doctrine wise?
That is first thing that comes to mind. Else do u move ur air bases around? each used MP = less availabilty/range

Eh, kg beat me too it,

Rasmus

I have played with these settings. No setting seems to get them off their rumps to fly. With the exception of Partisan resupply flights at night.

I would up the level assigned to the tasks you want them to perform - I used to think that this was just % required to fly each type of mission...but as I understand it you want these numbers to be higher (i.e. a 300 will give you a greater chance of a mission to be flown).

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong (I hope not since that means my air war is totally messed up).

I think you nailed it Hfarrish.... The ones I want to perform, in general, I raise quite high, while the ones I do not(and this is not a 'preference' thing, but rather what is aimed at what is important to me at any given week of play) I keep low. For example..most of the time, ALL of my "escort" positions on this screen would be 70-150. Quite a few times, my air war on offense, is intended to draw out and fight enemy fighters, more than destroy a unit, etc..in general, as an example to the OP..I raise ground support and ground support escort, both over 100 most of the time, and this results in quite a few air strikes against enemy units to help with my ground unit attacks.
Also one thing to watch..rotate some of the air units back and forth from the reserve, it keeps them at strength, and gathers experience for all of them. And, finally...I have found it helpful to adjust the airbase settings, also, which are what determines how much support any given airbase gives to operations around it.
Edit: One other thing I noticed..if your "percent required to fly"=10...you will wear out most of your own air force, as they will fight until they are only at 10% strength, which will also lower their morale, etc..and I am not sure if morale affects the same way in air in this game, as it does on land, but units which have suffered so many losses on land in this game, will not fight effectively, even if they can be brought to fight. IRL even 50% losses will cripple most units, I cannot imagine the morale of a unit that has suffered 89% losses, and is still asked to fight until they lose 1 more % lol.

You say it's mid-May.  What's the weather?  A lot of units won't fly when mud is present in the weather zone.

Recon units have a day/night setting, just like all other air units. You may be trying to fly units set opposite to your turn setting.

Click the bombing icon and that will show what your turn setting is.
