Biggus63 -> You've seen the bearded lady..... (8/19/2012 5:50:37 AM)

You've seen the bearded lady, you've seen the man eat his own head (if not, where have you been?).......now come and laugh at the new guy! I've just found this game (where have I been?) and have been pushing the pretty little pieces around for a couple of weeks and finding out such things as:-"What, you mean I don't put fuel in these here aeroplanes, what you're suggesting is that I open the fuel cap and put condoms, Lucky Strikes and Hershey bars in there?" and that it's almost as fun reading a good AAR as it is playing the game itself. It reminds me both of 'War in Flames' a little and on the tactical level somewhat like 'Flat Top' (remember that one? That was great fun.)

I'm a long-time wargamer (since '73) but as we all know that counts for little when you're crunching the possibilities of a new game system. So I present this once only offer, free! Be the first to deal me a crushing defeat and put this old whippershapper in his place. I've run through Guadalcanal a couple of times as the US so perhaps that would be a good place to start, either side OK. I'm not a 'gamey' player, and would look at things like low level four engine bombing and using merchant vessels as pickets in a dim light. Fine if agreed to beforehand just for fun but not really my cup of tea.

I'm not at all fussed if this takes a week or two to organise since I'm on a pretty steep learning curve atm. It's kinda nice just to be here, amongst other wargaming tragics. At least we don't think we're weird.....much.

Welcome aboard BG. Surprised to see this is your very first post.

dr.hal -> RE: You've seen the bearded lady..... (8/19/2012 3:06:58 PM)

Be careful, that bearded lady is my father!!!! Welcome aboard, this game is great, you're going to love it unless it ruins your life! I am a wargamer from way back as well (1965 or so, AH Tactics II and Midway and yes I had Flat Top too, still do!). I would love to take you up on your offer and teach you that young wippersnappers need to be put in their place too... but I've got a game going with Mark which is proving to be interesting and a challenge (I think I just sunk his BB Mutsu and we are only Feb '42!) which is all the excitement I can handle at one time. So good luck and keep us posted as to how you do.... Hal

Thanks dr.hal, and Hanzberger as well. Just my first post yes, but I've been reading AARs and the like to familiarise myself with the game system and the general forum vibe. The game looks wonderful even if the interface is a little fiddly in places, and as for it possibly 'ruining' my life.......well wargaming 'ruined' my life long ago and i'm quite happy with that. Reminds me of the time many moons ago when a girlfriend, jealous of the time I spent playing World in Flames, took the pieces I had scattered at US bases around the Pacific map and wrote 'kapow' with them in the ocean off Wake Is. Bloody funny I thought, laughing heartily as I put the pieces back precisely where they'd come from. She was shattered, thinking the game would be ruined. Funny....yes....but the writing was on the wall. There have been many others.......

Oh, and nice work with the Mutsu if it's really gone. I sunk it three times off Guadalcanal yesterday (nice fog of war) and I haven't worked out who's really sunk yet but they're not mine and that will do.

Kitakami -> RE: You've seen the bearded lady..... (8/20/2012 1:38:33 AM)

Welcome to the circus! (pun intended ;P)

If you come from World in Flames, you have the patience and the ability. But you have never, EVER, experienced something like this (and I came from games like Enemy at the Gates, WiF, A3R, The Longest Day, War in the Pacific, and the like... a list that started with Panzer leader, in 1980). Be forewarned: AE is both great and frustrating, both addictive and frustrating, both enjoyable and frustrating... you get the idea, I am sure! ;P

Again, welcome! Sadly, I can't accomodate another game. But I am sure you will soon find someone who will.

PS As you will notice from my sig, I play the other side ofd the conflict. I suggest you play the Allies until you get things in order... Japanese Production in AE is an artform I consider myself a mere student of, and average at that.

dr.hal -> RE: You've seen the bearded lady..... (8/20/2012 4:39:11 AM)

And I will say that Kitakami's remarks about production being an art form for the Japanese is true, and so is the art form for the Allies of simply staying alive and competative until July '42 and beyond when it becomes relatively easy! Hal

Admiral1 has kindly offered to contest the control of some grotty little specks of dirt in the Solomons with me. As the Emperor has decreed that these specks are to be regarded from here on into eternity as sovereign territory of the glorious and most benevolent empire of greater Nippon and our associated co-prosperity sphere we must deny these soft-serve ice cream eating barbarians a foothold on our holy soil, and besides, I've only just finished the Zen garden at our new airfield on Guadalcanal.......and they said it was a waste of IJN engineering assets! Fools! Anyhow.....If this gets off the ground I may even burst into print on the subject......a cautionary 'coming of age' tale, like 'Catcher in the rye', but with large calibre gunfire and aerial torpedos.....or not. We shall see. I only hope my boys can swim.....

Details with the main bulletin to come...

Canoerebel -> RE: You've seen the bearded lady..... (8/21/2012 7:32:09 PM)

The bearded lady is the love child of Phyllis Diller (God rest her soul) and John III.

zuluhour -> RE: You've seen the bearded lady..... (8/21/2012 7:59:25 PM)

I believe John will have his boys show up at your door, dressed as cub scouts, and kick you in the shins.
