They only just did something about it recently.
The patch (1st patch for Universe) they just released has bigger fonts.
I don't use Steam myself but I know generally patch releases are delayed on Steam (1 reason why I don't use it)
I must say it has helped a lot, I am only on 1920x1200, but that was pretty bad before, I can't imagine on higher res.
So hopefully you don't have the patch yet and it will solve your issue.

Steam patched already, helped a lot with readability of the message bar/logs. You can also enlarge the lower left info window to a much larger size at the cost of mainscreen space. Thought it way too small at first, but I've gotten used to it after a week.

I haven't even played the game before the patch. If these fonts are better now, I wonder what they looked like before.

It's not just the fonts that are the problem either. All graphical elements are too small. My eyes are pretty good but it's too much for me at 2560x1600.

I have a feeling that Distant Worlds is a lost cause but I'd very much appreciate Matrix looking into UI scaling solutions for the sequel.

If only the new scale changes weren't enforced and made the number of message log entries much fewer... [:-]

You must be mostly weak-eyed humans: I am a Gazurian and when my two eyes get tired, I just close them and use my third eye for a while while the other eyes rest.
