I-152 top speed ~ 220 mph

SB-2 top speed ~ 300 mph

"when the SB2s encountered trouble, the pilots put on full throttle, and the escorting fighters were left behind.. "

lol funny[8D]

Reminds me of the joke about the 2 guys in the woods that stumble upon a bear. The first guy kneels down and starts tightening his shoe laces, the other guy says "I don't think we are going to be able to outrun that bear" Guy kneeling "I don't have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you."

Also, B-17 pilots said that best protection against German fighters was formation of B-24s nearby, since Germans would attack them first...

Good images of the SB bomber! Even in Iron Cross/Red Star Vol 1, good quality images of this bomber are rare and those that are are often German photos of wrecked SB's. Documentary is actually pretty interesting once you get into it. Didn't realize how cramped the SB design was for the crew. Not for the claustrophobic. Other volumes don't have any pics because by end of 41 the type was all but extinct.

The timing of the scene is rather ironic. My radio theater group last night worked on a show about the "Night Witches," a Russian bomber group made up entirely of women flying crop dusters (PO-2s) that were obsolete before the war started. They would fly only at night and more or less glide to their targets from about 20km away, then one would power up to draw fire while the other laid down her bombs. Beyond the target they'd regroup and swap roles for the return flight. More information can be found in this Wikipedia article.

Of course, when we started reading the script everyone was laughing about using biplanes in WW II. I didn't bother to tell them about how effective those things can be in AE!

Beautiful machine. Can't say the pilots were SI material but i'd not want to get in a bar fight with em either. [:D]

Actually, no, I haven't been up to Everett to see that collection. Part of our script, though, involves unveiling one of the planes at the Museum of Flight, with two of the pilots present (this script is, of course, historical fiction).

Shameless plug: the radio group (American Radio Theater) is doing public performances 29-30 September at Pioneer Hall, in the Madison Park neighborhood. This isn't one of the scripts for that weekend; it still has a lot of work needed! But if anyone in the area is interested in seeing how radio shows were produced in the 1940s, come on out! Admission is free but donations are requested.

Nik,

Your photos motivated me to drive up to Paine Field a few months after you posted them. The old Soviet biplane was truly beautifully restored. My first thought was, after seeing the pics of the Night Witches, no wonder Soviet men were so willing to die!
