Winsaucerer -> Two thoughts: Easy tech, slow game (8/30/2012 12:22:36 PM)

Hi,

I'm one of those people that just got this game via the discount offer. I've noticed two things about the game that I was wondering about (possible spoiler alert):
1. I was quite friendly with the ancient guardians, and when the shakturi came on the scene they seemed to like me a lot. In fact, so much, that I could trade with them and offer to do sanctions against another empire in exchange for amounts upwards of 80mil! I was able, via this method, to get quite a lot of tech off the ancient guardians, and it honestly felt too easy. Implement sanctions, get lots of tech in return, end sanctions when I feel like it. Is it meant to be this easy?

2. The game runs slow. I have 700 stars, and now when I'm in battles it seems to drag, and the map is slow. I have a 3.4 ghz cpu (i7 2600k), 16GB memory, sli 560 ti graphics cards (although I suspect this game does not use the graphics cards). I suspect that my computer is near the top end of gaming machines around (certainly not the best, though). And I'm thinking if it's slow for me, it must be very bad for quite a few other people. Is there something I'm "doing wrong", that's rendering the game so laggy? It's certainly playable, just irritating.

Otherwise, the game seems really good!

It is a pretty slow game, also in order to retain difficulty, you have to limit yourself a tad ...

I usually add...tons of bugs to my game, maybe a few friends, and then we're talkin.

Hey Winsaucerer,

The game is not the best performance wise in the world, however with that system you shouldn't be experiencing much of an issue. Apparently the graphics card doesn't really matter for this game, it is pretty much all down to your processor. I have an i5 2500k which I overclocked to 4.5g ghz and everything runs fine. It is funny, I overclocked to try and improve Skyrim performance and it didn't make a difference whatsoever, (not even a single frame) in Skyrim. The side-effect that Distant Worlds started running a lot better was very welcome though [:D]

Obviously I'm not recommend you do that unless you know what you are doing!

I'm not surprised it didn't help Skyrim. Games like that shift all the work onto the GPU, leaving very little for the CPU. Main advantage for a CPU for a game like skyrim would be helping other programs you have running in the background from decreasing your performance, and allowing other tasks in Skyrim that do use CPU to run fast (AI pathfinding would be one of the bigger tasks). As for Distant Worlds, it appears to me that it doesn't do the kind of graphical effects that make use of a GPU, so I'm again not surprised that overclocking CPU made a difference :)

I've bought myself a corsair h100 water cooler, and will install that once I resolve my psu issues (faulty, in for repair/replacement). After that, I'll give overclocking a whirl and see how much it improves my performance.

As for a technology - If You will set up a game where technology will be more expensive than You will have less opportunities for trading it. It will not solve a problem - it will be still possible to as You did, but on a lesser scale (let's say You will not be able to obtain 15 techs but "only" 5). I will also add that in my opinion also it is too easy to obtain tech in such way (or obtain large amounts of money by selling tech to others).

I can't bebothered trading for money, since I only can see a 100,000 button. Are there ways to request larger sums quicker?
