Well the good news is, anything your troops accidentally dropped or left behind at the start line, they can retrieve it now.

Your army is also in much better shape than it was in the last game. You can actually attack in 42' and might be able to defend in 43'.

"Hey look guys, I found my watch that I dropped in the bushes last time we were here!"

That should be good for at least a 5 point morale boost to the troops [;)]

True, although I will not make a headcount untill the Blizzard is all gone tbh. I fear I might still lose more units. Oh, I'll defend in -43 for sure, the question is wether I am still doing so in -44 [:D]

Hehehehe yeah something like that. Not to mention that mail should have an easier time getting to the front units, that ought to be another +10, shorter way for foodstuff to travel as well, another +5, same goes for news, +5.
Heeeey! My guys should have morale at 100% come spring [:D]

turn 35

Overall
Thought I would try something new during blizzard, so I made more attacks than the USSR this turn [:D]
The USSR launched 11 attacks for a result of 3 helds and 8 retreats, which we countered with 12 attacks, gaining us 4 helds, 7 retreats and 1 rout.
Intel from the Kremlin indicates that no USSR Guard units have been created so far. This is good news.
Better news still, is that HQ in Berlin reports mud in the streets [&o].

Losses
USSR : 70.000 troops, 593 guns, 161 AFVs, 66 AC.
Axis : 43.000 troops, 256 guns, 55 AFVs, 7 AC.

German pools
Manpower : 251
Vehicles : 165.786
Armaments : 193.700

Virtual Adolf has issued a decree, telling all factory workers to go home and spend the day with their wifes, but we fear they will turn up at work nevertheless. We could really need some more people to wage war with.

AFV -> RE: What?! Seriously?! You are back for more??? No Oloren!! (10/3/2012 2:18:39 PM)

Terje:
I skipped forward but I wanted to respond to your concerns about CV not being accurate. Here is a good way to think about it, at least it works for me,
1) CV is calibrated for deliberate attacks. If you are doing a hasty, divide your own CV by 2. Then think of the die roll range as possibly dividing your CV by 2 again (sure, it could be even more severe- or it could multiply your CV by two, but you want to think of the range of possibilities).
2) Due to the way CV is displayed, if you see a 1, that could easily be a 1.9. (sure, it could also be .5- again just thinking of the range of possibilities here).

So, in the case of an 8 CV unit attacking a 1 CV unit: If you decide to do a hasty, think of it as only 4:1, right off the bat. Worst case the CV is closer to 2 than 1- so your 4:1 has a worst case chance of only being a 2:1. Then think of the die roll range as bring that down by half again to 1:1 (again, worst case). So my evaluation of this attack, all other things being equal, would be that doing a hasty, I would give it (roughly, as all things concerning odds in WiTE are) a 50% chance to fail. Doesn't mean I would not do it, but if I did and it failed, I would not be shocked.

Also, take into account the size of the unit (brigage, division, corp). A russian division and brigade side by side might both show a CV of 1, however we know their CV is not equal, its just displayed that way.

terje439 -> RE: What?! Seriously?! You are back for more??? No Oloren!! (10/4/2012 10:20:00 AM)

Yeah, I know, but it takes some getting used to, and I find it rather hard to adjust to it tbh, but that is probably just me.
From 8:1 to 1:3 is a long way no matter, but I am getting used to it by now, still not happy about it though [;)]

Turn 36

Overall
Well, there is a blizzard in Belrin again...
The USSR launched 24 attacks this turn, scoring 8 helds and 16 retreats. We manage to take a step back in most areas this turn, so hopefully fewer USSR attacks, or more held results next turn. We were satisfied scaring a partisan.

Losses
USSR : 80.000 troops, 630 guns, 181 AFVs, 172 AC.
Axis : 45.000 troops, 295 guns, 10 AFVs, 13 AC.

German pools
Manpower : 0 (yup, they did go to work last turn after all)

Turn 37

Overall
All over the Eastern Front Champagne is used to celebrate the words of one of Himmler's Sages, that there will be no more Blizzard. Or, that is, that the Axis troops will now fight even if there is a blizzard.
Anyway, on the last Blizzard turn, the USSR launched 10 attacks for 2 helds and 8 retreats, while we chased away 2 partisans.
I wonder if Brad will start running east again next turn?

Losses
USSR : 55.000 troops, 302 guns, 123 AFVs, 32 AC.
Axis : 38.000 troops, 228 guns, 11 AFVs, 14 AC.

Turn 38

Overall
Well, the first turn of mere winter was not as good as hoped for. My units are still far too low CV-wise to be any real danger for the USSR. My stronger units ofc is in the west, but since I need to get them to the front, I use all the rail I can, and still end up marching alot of them east, which ofc is bad since that depletes that badly needed CV...
The USSR launched 20 attacks this turn, scoring 5 helds and 15 retreats (mostly around Riga), whereas we launched 19 attacks, scoring 3 helds and 16 retreats (mostly in the south). We also ran over a partisan as he was placing a mine on a road. Guess he was too caught up in his work to see the approaching Opel truck [:'(]

USSR Guard status at the end of Blizzard
According to Brad, the USSR only gained 1 guard during the Blizzard. Atleast that is something done right I suppose...

Losses
USSR : 128.000 troops, 1.633 guns, 417 AFVs, 31 AC.
Axis : 49.000 troops, 520 guns, 22 AFVs, 15 AC.

German pools
Manpower : 330
Vehicles : 172.152
Armaments : 220.280
Hiwi : 7

Current concerns
Apart from the low manpower count, the main concern is the low CV of my units. I think that if you did a "total CV in all units"-count for both sides, the USSR would come up either for a draw or even a win...Not an encouraging thought.

To do
1. Get the units to the front.
2. Get back on the offensive.

Turn 39

Overall
well, we step up the number of attacks, and the USSR reduce theirs. We also manage to pocket a few units, but it seems like a mere drop in the ocean when I look at the carpet of USSR units ahead of me. Oh well, in the words of Poco, I guess I'll just have to Keep on Trying.
3 USSR attacks resulted in 3 retreats, while out 46 attacks gave us 6 helds, 38 retreats and 2 routs. Our brave Rumanian allies hunted down a partisan on their way back to the front as well.

Losses
USSR : 153.000 troops, 2.596 guns, 455 AFVs, 26 AC.
Axis : 42.000 troops, 452 guns, 45 AFVs, 10 AC.

USSR units in pockets at the end of turn
10, a mix of divisions and brigades, and airborne, infantry and tank.

German pools

Vehicle : 165.829
Armaments : 222.726

You are building fort units way back in Germany; you are using up manpower and armaments without good use.

It is merely to prevent fort decay. I had hoped to get them to lvl 3 before the blizzard ended, but that was not happening as I could not build past lvl 2. But I see your point.

Turn 40

Disclaimer
Forgot to take a screenshot this turn, and since I am in a hurry, no time to go back and make one atm.

Overall
I keep attacking, and I eliminate the pockets from last turn and form two new ones. I got too many held results for my liking, but oh well, guess that is all about the cracking of the eggs and the omelets thingy.
The USSR make one attack against a low strength SEC unit and force it to retreat, apart from that they are slowly falling back in the more exposed areas. We are still working on bringing all units to the front, fortunately all our heavier units are now at the front(ish), and there are only a handful of infantry units left to move, so this should be completed in one or two turns.
We launch 60 attacks, and score 12 helds, 33 retreats, 12 routs and 3 surrenders. I prefer winter over blizzard [;)]

Turn 41

Overall
I think I have mentioned it before, but the game engine really hates me at times... We have a lvl 9 frost, and...Mud...Most of the front is bogged down, and as a result the number of attacks this turn is reduced. The USSR still make one attack, and score a retreat, but that is all they do. We manage 34 attacks, scoring 4 helds, 21 retreats, 6 routs, 1 shatter and 2 surrenders.

Do you have a more detailed screen of the front situation in the south?

ErsteKavallerieDivision -> RE: What?! Seriously?! You are back for more??? No Oloren!! (10/10/2012 9:35:58 PM)

Hi Terje:

You could make use of these armaments points by disbanding excess units such as Construction Bns, RAD, FBD, LW Air Bases, Luftkorps, and even Corps.

Then I would set objectives for your 1942 summer offensive:
- In the north, you could try to recapture Riga and then start forming a straight line along the Daugava all the way down to the Berezina. Make a bold push forcing your oppent to give ground quickly. There's some excellent defensive terrain. Put this entire front static and place some reserves behind.
- In the center, I wouldn't attack at all because of the thick swamp.
- I would concentrate all amor and motorized divisions in the south for forming pockets and reaching Kiew and the Dnjepr line.
- Use Romanians for building forts.
- Use Italians for attacking since they will disappear in 1943 completely.
- Spare your Hungarians for safe, morale building attacks. You will need them in 1943.

Regards,

Joe

Sloppy of your opponent to allow a mountain division to die ( they don't come back! ).

I am sorry, but that seems like to small an order for me [:D]
Well, Riga never left my hands, so that one is allready taken. The aim now is to start pushing as soon as the weather clears. The USSR units are really weak, and Brad has confirmed that he has built too many, leaving them all very brittle due to lack of troops.
I am not sure at this time however if space is what I should push for. I am tempted to go for his army instead, killing off units (well, if given a chance, ofc I will take space too [;)]), but the thing is that I either do something clever, or I lose in 44. The ammount of space is not really a big deal imo here, as the front will be too long for me to cover, and the USSR too strong to hold.
The situation as of now;
AGN - stalemate, but this should change when the last divisions arrive at the front, and we should be able to push the enmy back
Border AGN-AGC - forming and eliminating pockets and gaining some ground
AGC - nada, just holding. The enemy here is mainly strongeer units.
AGS - most of our offensive capabilities, and pockets are formed each turn as long as the weather allows it.

I do think that AGS will be the decisive matter (yeah yeah, so I am delusional, let me be so ^^), as there is a huge area of open ground for the USSR to hold. I forsee an ability to really put the hurt on the Red Army down here.

As to disbanding, I do not think the time is here just yet, but as we close in on -43, then yes, stuff will need to be disbanded, but for now, I will not do so.

Not much that comes back now, is there? Think we are passed the "if it dies, it dies"-date? I do however not think Brad realized that I could rail my panzers that close to the front, and that they would still have time for an encirclement when they disembarged the trains.

Turn 42

Overall
We keep pushing and forming pockets. The idea is to kill of more AP-worth of troops than Brad can build. Think I am ahead so far since Blizzard. Apart from hunting down 2 partisans, we also launch 75 attacks, scoring 9 helds, 51 retreats, 9 routs, 2 shatters and 4 surrenders. The USSR has started to fall back a few hexes in some areas, we follow them like a trained dog.

USSR units destroyed
5 rifle divisions (5x10 AP, right?)
1 tank brigade (5 AP??)
5 rifle brigades (5x5AP??)
1 airborne brigade (5 AP??)
If my brain remembers the various cost correctly, and my math is correct, that means we killed 85 AP worth of units this turn.
