This just went to the top of my "Want to Add to my Collection List": Eagles of the Southern Sky [image]http://www.tainanbooks.com/images/MAIN_new.jpg[/image] From the website: quote:
'EAGLES of the SOUTHERN SKY' (ISBN 978-0-473-21763-1) covers the history of the Tainan Naval Air Group in New Guinea, including its Rabaul operatons, from 1 April through to mid-November 1942 (NOTE - it does not cover the East Indies or Guadalcanal campaigns). The book sets new benchmarks for historical detail. For the first time both the Japanese and Allied accounts have been fully reconciled. It will have 352-pages (44 in color), and will be printed on quality semi-gloss, 11" x 8.5" in size, with text laid out in double columns. Front and rear softcovers are shown above The substantive text of 165,841 words is complemented with: - color profiles of: 33 Tainan Zero fighters with history of each, 42 Allied aircraft against whom they fought, including RAAF No. 75 Squadron Kittyhawks, and 18 of Japanese aircraft with whom the Tainan fought alongside; - more than 300 rare B&W photos, most never published before, from both the Allied and Japanese side; - 26 historically-accurate paintings of combat over New Guinea, created from reference to aerial photography of the particular areas of New Guinea over which the Tainan fought, and; - detailed maps and appendices on losses, Tainan markings, crew rosters, losses and kills appendices, and full index (see 'Chapters' section in 'Book Tour'). From j-aircraft.org: quote:
Luca Ruffato and myself are in the process of finalizing our Tainan book. In one of the many indexes we have matched every Allied aircraft shot down by the Tainan in New Guinea from 1 April to 15 Nov 1942 against the the aerial claims as listed in the kodochosho (all claims in this document are, depending on the mission, credited either individually or equally among mission participants.) The total number of Allied aircraft removed from New Guinea/ New Britain skies in aerial combat during this timeframe was 78. The results of the top five scorers might surprise, and please note that the below figures exclude (underline one) the Guadalcanal theatre. The decimals are a result of dividing group claims. Note also that only 'definites' were credited. We have also calculated the reverse, ie actual Allied claims versus real Tainan losses, and hasten to add that the overclaim ratio of about 10:1 equally applies to Allied claims.
