Before the refit I assume.

That is true.

Shark7 -> RE: Kaga w/ 8 inch guns (9/27/2012 12:57:24 AM)

Back when everyone still thought the war would be won by gunships. The guns were removed pre-war weren't they?

Afaik yes and the deck was extended.

And her I thought only the Lex and Sara were built like that! ugh...

Nikademus -> RE: Kaga w/ 8 inch guns (9/27/2012 4:49:45 PM)

Akagi and Kaga before their 1930's refit were interesting looking to say the least. Like Lexington and Saratoga they sported SP 8inch guns, though in the Japanese case this included some SP's in casemates as well. The most interesting aspect of the Japanese design was the 3 flight decks. In the age of bi-planes that didn't need huge takeoff space, it was an interesting experiment in carrier deck operations. With the advent of heavier monoplane designs the concept became a liability and was eliminated thus giving the two a singular long, conventional flight deck. The 8inch turrets were removed during that refit.

Ironically Lex and Sara would only lose their space eaters later, and Lex not at all due to the Coral Sea battle. Space eaters yes but it made them look COOL too. [:D]

I always thought that the tri-deck Gamalon carriers in Star Blazers were inspired by the Akagi and Kaga. [:D]

No. Kaga and Akagi had 8 inch guns till the end.

Oh boy, glad to know I am not the only one that has SB flashbacks when eyeing many of the pics here. Seeing how I never served on board any of these, Star Blazers are my main reference point. I remember racing home from school to catch the show!

This angle you can't see 8 inch guns, because all guns were aft part of the ship, near waterline. They are still there.

Nikademus -> RE: Kaga w/ 8 inch guns (9/27/2012 8:00:01 PM)

Ah Starblazers.....ever notice how every hit on the Yamato/Argo exploded on the outside of the hull but Yamato/Argo's main guns blew in and out of the Gamalon ships...which then completely exploded. And that big fat bridge with the windows.....never got hit. What is it about spaceships that stick their bridges on top of warships where they have great views and are totally vulnerable to damage? Star Trek....Star Wars....Star Blazers..

THAT SERIES WAS BORKED!!!!! Gamalon ships were BORKED!

Sadly there was no internet where someone could jump up and down about it. [:D]

sadly, i've had too many years to think about these things.......
