New Polish "government" is formed in Lublin (one that will be "friendly" to Soviet Union), under the glorious (and misleading) name "Polish Committee of National Liberation". A manifesto with its programme is published, dated August 31st. Contacts with legal Polish government in exile cease completely.

49th Army commander, Mikhail Shumilov, is dismissed and replaced by Mikhail Sharokin. 62th Guards Rifle Corps is formed.

Victorious march across East Prussia continues, with its citizens fleeing west in panic. With Bischofsburg in Red Army's control, Braunsberg, Heilsberg, Allenstein, Ortelsburg and Willenberg are next targets. Lack of rail repair units on this secondary front is telling, and so the supply situation here is the most difficult:

despite your lack of rails and supply problems, can only be a few turns before you include Berlin on this particular sector of the Front?

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/10/2015 8:46:05 PM)

Berlin is still months away. And it will be south-center (of those in Poland now) that gets to it first. A lot of blood has to be spilled before that happens though.

randallw -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/11/2015 3:18:01 AM)

How are the industry support numbers ( heavy industry, production, oil, that stuff ) and are there any supply shortages?

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/11/2015 9:13:45 AM)

For now I can give you some charts with turn production. First one:

And the second one:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/11/2015 9:16:48 AM)

I think the sharp drop in supplies before 1945 was when we switched to 1.08.

It was a drop from 151000 per week to 122850 with 1944 multipliers and then to 127575 with 1945 multipliers.

To be precise:
753393 Soviet and 306247 Axis men will be killed
11544 Soviet and 328277 Axis men will be captured
34058 Soviet and 46529 Axis men will be disabled (minus returns)
6153 Soviet and 2694 Axis aircraft will be lost

Due to changes between versions the AFV and gun loss count will be imprecise, but:
6547 Soviet and 1778 Axis AFV will be lost on 1.07 plus
10648 Soviet and 2484 Axis AFV will be lost on 1.08

randallw -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/12/2015 1:38:01 AM)

I guess there are enough supplies to 'get by' right now, but attacking all along the line will be too much of a strain.

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/12/2015 3:55:50 AM)

As you can see I am running with 0 supplies in the pool (hand to mouth), even with all-time high production and a bit higer than average number of HI. But my army is 11 million strong. And I never considered supplies as determinants whether I can attack or no [:)]

Edit: and this was with 1.07.15 multipliers and usage in place. On the other hand you can see that I have a lot of useless armaments. It seems I evacuated too many ARM factories to the detriment of HI. Looks like even back then the hints to ignore evacuating HI were wrong.

Edit 2: with 1.080.2 I would be able to set ARM production percentage to lower value and save me some supplies this way.

Turn 169 (September 7th, 1944)

Noticing the potential for encirclement, STAVKA sends 8th Tank Army to the south. The army arrives and joins the 7th Tank Army in the attack north-east. Axis situation detoriates, as XIth German and VIth Hungarian Corps are in danger of being cut off, together with 12 German infantry divisions, 2 Luftwaffe field divisions and 2 security regiments. The cauldron is far from being inviolable though, so the realistic goal is to take half of those forces into captivity. Szeged is captured:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/14/2015 8:08:29 AM)

1st Belarussian front enters Lisko and crosses San, taking Jaroslaw by using a combined mobile force (two guards cavalry corps and one guards tank corps) of three armies:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/14/2015 8:08:51 AM)

Operational success of 1st Ukrainian Front in the center of Poland, as Vistula is forded in two places. The first bridgehead is a big one, centered on Deblin (with a railway bridge), while the second smaller one is located near Otwock, where 3rd Shock Army cavalry bravely swam across the river under enemy fire. Enemy position in Warsaw is now in grave danger, and they will not be able to hold it for long. All these victories are made possible by the sacrifice of tanks (harmful, as stocks are low) and men (not harmful, as stocks are high) of 6 tank armies operating together. The goal for next week is linking both bridgeheads and advancing north towards Warsaw, as well as crossing river north of the city, near Modlin:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/14/2015 8:09:13 AM)

Five East Prussian cities taken, citizens now learn the power of hatred and vengeance of peasant-and-workers military might. Effectivenes of Soviet forces increases, as every soldier has 10 or more watches on his arms and in his pockets, so it's easier to coordinate operations. The difficult terrain of the Mazurian Lakes is now behind, open plains lie in front leading to the lower Vistula. But there will be no time to cross the river that far north before autumn:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/14/2015 8:09:28 AM)

First task of the new Polish government, loyal to USSR, is forming 2nd Polish Army. Since only a small part of Poland is in Soviet hands, the army will form in Kishinev, far to the south. The recruits will also require a thorough "political" education, so it's better to isolate them from their countrymen. The army consists of 1 tank corps, 6 infantry divisions, 1 tank brigade, 2 at brigades, and 1 engineer brigade. Several new Soviet support units will join the army, as well as few experienced support units sent from 1st Polish Army, to bring this formation to the standard of its Red Army counterparts. It is estimated that the army will be ready in four months.

An uprising starts in Warsaw. The rebels claim it's against the Germans, but everyone in Moscow knows it's against the Soviet Union. The orders from Politburo are clear, the scheme to be used is the same as the one used when liberating "Western Belarussia" and "Western Ukraine", where the Polish Home Army launched "Operation Tempest". Red Army's frontline units are to cooperate with the Poles during battles to oust the Germans, but after the German forces retreat, they have to hand the Poles over to NKVD, which will "take care" of them. Officers will be shot or sent to Siberia, while the privates will have a choice to redeem themselves in the 2nd Polish Army. More cannon fodder is always useful.

General-Maior Mikhail Gromov replaces General-Leitenant Pavel Stepanov as new Transcaucasus Air Command leader. Transcaucasus Front commander, Kliment Voroshilov, improves his morale skill (8). 35th Army commander, Filipp Zhmachenko, improves his initiative (6). 2nd Tank Army is renamed 2nd Guards Tank Army. 87th Rifle Corps is formed.

or it could lead to chaos as not only will each soldier have independent means to query the precise time of an attack order, they may well not have a single source of information? This could end very bady ...[8D]

your tank losses are truely scary .. even if the application of so much armour is clearly opening up the front for you

Huh? You have or had 3M supply in Supply Stores. That is not hand to mouth.

As for your ARM surplus, how many Rocket Divisions have you got? They are quite pricey...

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/15/2015 1:46:30 PM)

Sorry, I always make this rookie mistake of looking for my supplies in the global pool. You're right, they are in cities and I have a lot of them.

At this point in game I had 5 breakthrough artillery divisions, 2 gun brigades (from 1st Polish Army) and 5 guards rocket launcher divisions. Not much, I know, somehow I was never focused on them, more on my mobile forces and support units.

More on this later. A fun fact is that I had the highest AFV losses of the entire game during the last turn of the game. And a pretty computer number too - 2048 [:)]

Turn 170 (September 14th, 1944)

Having no other choice, the Germans make a counterattack with 6th Panzer Division and save some of their units from the "kessel" near Satu Mare. With help from newly arrived 9th Tank Army, the Red Army closes the ring again, this time cutting off 8 infantry divisions, 1 Luftwaffe field division and 1 security regiment. Of these only 3 have a chance to escape grim fate, provided the enemy will risk his precious mobile assets. 2nd Ukrainian Front joins the fray, after moving through the mountain passes into northern Hungary:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/19/2015 11:35:01 AM)

River San is crossed along its entire length. Unfortunately the whole area is well defended, with layer after layer of field fortifications manned by fanatic Germans. Taking Cracow will have to wait until winter:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/19/2015 11:35:33 AM)

Avalanche of meat, bone and steel from the East is unstoppable in central Poland. Sandomierz, Ostrowiec, Radom and Gora Kalwaria are taken, and the two bridgeheads are connected, to form one continous - albeit narrow - strip of land west of the Vistula. 1st Shock Army fords the river north of Warsaw, near Modlin, and is now threatening defenders of the Polish capital:

Plonsk and Mlawa are captured in northern Mazovia. Of Eastern Prussia only five cities remain in German hands, including Elbing, where a factory of SdKfz-234/3 Puma armored cars is located. Soon, the entire factory with machines, documents and engineers (if any will be left around) is going to be lifted and transported to Mother Russia. The experience gathered in 1941 is now coming in handy:

Turn 171 (September 21th, 1944)

After the destruction of surrounded enemy divisions, three tank armies quickly redeploy towards Hungarian-Yugoslavian border. Their goal is to strike north from Kiskunhalas, along the Danube, towards Budapest. Slower infantry and cavalry units head directly west, taking Kerceg:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/19/2015 12:41:52 PM)

Three German divisions, that had a slim chance of escape week ago, are abandoned by the O.K.H. Their commanding generals with a handful of men escape via a narrow corridor created by LVII Panzer Corps, while the rest gets some ammo and a box of Iron Crosses as a farewell gift, courtesy of the Luftwaffe. Nearly 800 thousand men of the 2nd Ukrainian Front surround them, thirsty for blood, after weeks of hardships during the crossing the Carpathian Mountains. Nyiregyhasa is taken without a fight, as the enemy flees towards Tisa river line:

morvael -> RE: Russia! Why not? (Morvael welcome) (2/19/2015 12:42:29 PM)

Warsaw is abandoned by the Germans and captured! Members of the PCNL (PKWN) make themselves comfortable in the few buildings that still stand intact, mostly in the ex-German district. Smersh finds out that the building previously occupied by Gestapo is full of useful tools to deal with Polish resistance members, so there is no need to order any from Lubyanka in Moscow. Propaganda photos are taken of "happy" rank-and-file insurgents, and after that they are immediately dispatched to Deblin, in order to join 1st Polish Army. Meanwhile, their commanders are packed to Lend-Lease Dakotas and sent to Moscow, for "consultations" (from which they won't return). Anyway, after just 22 days of the uprising and a hasty German retreat, only some 100 thousand civilians were killed and just 15% of the city was completely destroyed. South of Warsaw, Grojec and Skarzysko-Kamienna are taken:
