With Love From Soerbaja

1) Today saw a demonstration of why Japan doesn't want to let the Allies hold Soerbaja in the late summer of 1942. Nine B-17s port attack Kendari after some good recon. The CAP is heavy, but Zeros break off and decline to attack in four chunks, so the reinforcement waves are ineffective. The Forts get over the target in good order at 5000 feet, and these pilots have been flying Oil missions for months now. Forts carry a lot of bombs.

2) Something similar tried at Truk where the recon is also excellent. These B-17s are tired, the pilots greener. Also lose one to a balloon, a good reminder that 5000-6000 feet isn't free. One good hit though. Message that Truk has radar. Need to remember that.

3) The chess game continues at Rangoon. I don't have confidence I'm winning here. This may be a very big, years-long mistake due to Indian, Aussie, and Brit replacement rates, but I'm committed. As Chungking will probably be gone shortly I need to use the Chinese for something worth it, and if I can, balance the VPs I will lose at Chungking. The air assault on the stack sitting in the Rangoon hex has done a lot of disabling damage. Has cost Japan hundreds of planes too, but he can build more of those. I think supplies were a critical factor for Japan, but now at least two medium large convoys have made it in and I can't muster the B-26s to get through against his CAP. Against in-transit merchants the Port Blair air force has done a little with torpedo Beauforts, but he is again plastering the island with Bettys and I have had to move the surviving B-26s to Ramree and Prome where they can't reach down the coast. And I can't get any navy in except subs due to overwhelming long-range torpedo bomber forces.

My overall strategy is to hold, with damage, at Rangoon and pin that huge Japanese defense stack. Pegu has about the same defenders it had when my attackers were driven north six weeks or so ago. At least one Guards Division, and a couple of others, plus support. These Allied units have been left completely alone from the air, and have somewhat recovered with some additions from Tougoo. The Big Stack, now in transit to Toungoo in Strat, will march on Pegu immediately. My hope (no calculations) is they win at Pegu and force a survivors' retreat to Rangoon, further pressuring supplies. With Pegu the land supply routes are plugged and he has sea and internal power as long as Resources last. He has no Oil from Magwe, so refinery supply does not exist in Rangoon. At that point I would do a Shock cross-river attack from Pegu with everything but a retreat-holding unit. And then an attack by the long-suffering stack at Rangoon from the other side. And hope that's enough to shatter the defenses.

But if the Big Stack can't take Pegu it all comes down. Even if it does win at Pegu I may not have enough engineers in the Rangoon stack to deal with the Forts (6 I think.) It's a gamble.

If it falls apart I have Bassein retreat open and good supply coming down from Chittagong. The Pegu stack could stay to threaten, or try to go south for Chiang Mai and cut the railhead there. Then wait out the monsoon and for some air power. If Chungking falls in the interim the Chinese LCUs won't take replacements and may have to live lean until 1944 when I may be able to re-take their capital.

I never liked chess much.

4) To add to the mix, one of the biggest Bombardment missions I've ever seen comes up the river to Rangoon and lets loose on the Allied stack. I don't know how far these guys need to go to get more bullets, and there's fuel at Sabang/Medan, but if it's used in ships it's not used in HI factories. This bombardment did little damage, but was exciting.

Kendari Again

1) Even after all these years it's still possible to see a message not encountered before:

"SS Tambor detects surfaced submarine at 131, 113 but it immediately dives"

2) The Rota op attracts a total of four xAKs plus at least two escorts, landing to deal with one SST-worth of Aussie commandos. The attack re-takes the island, but I suspect the garrison will stay now and need to be supplied. If so, mission accomplished. About 160 total Japanese casualties.

4) Port Blair is heavily bombed, costing two damaged B-26s destroyed. About half of the bombers which would have hit the Rangoon stack come to Port Blair today, so small blessings. Standard results at Rangoon; about 150 casualties for many damaged and destroyed 2Es. Soerbaja is bombed too, but there's more CAP there. The Fulmers left behind by the various travails of the RN carriers are doing very well against Zeros, and I actually have some of them in the pools. Soerbaja will go to Forts 6 tomorrow. Chungking rounds out the prep bombing, but not as much. With 60 LCUS now heading in to siege maybe bombers aren't important. Supply at Chungking dips below 4000.

5) The Big Stack begins unpacking at Toungoo and is aimed at Pegu. Two fully-rested 350 AV Chinese corps already at Toungoo are also committed to the march. In for a penny . . .

8) Bombing pressure kept up on Eniwetok. Two Seabee units plus some combat engineers are fixing the damage daily, but just. No additional forts are going up. At Roi-Namur Japan tries a deliberate attack and suffers, losing one LCU as well.

The three Chinese corps, one south, two east, slowly approach Moulmein at not much more than a mile a day.

2) Rangoon bombing kills about 200 Allied for a normal amount of losses to Japanese air. The stack for Pegu out on the road tot he north of that base is stopped and held as it was approaching too fast. The Big Stack is still at Toungoo unpacking; I want everyone in one pile and then head into Pegu together. Supply is becoming an issue in the Rangoon stack. Calcutta and Bombay can't keep up. Ships are available to carry to Chittagong, but the supply is at daily build rates. I have four big convoys from Ct to Bombay in the wormhole, but it will be a couple of weeks.

3) SS Herring gets a fish into a big AO in Kwaj harbor. Fires seen and that sometimes is enough for an AO at a small base with little naval support. Hoping.

5) The attack at Chungking does not come. Japan is resting. The LCU count there shifts to 53 from 60 yesterday. 53 is a number I often saw for the stack one hex away, so maybe that is a better number than 60. Will it really matter with supply in the city at 2500? Naaaaah.

6) Allies foolishly try to follow up yesterday's bad attack by Japan at Roi-Namur. Not enough arty, not enough engineers for Forts 3. Won't do this again. This attack does show that the unit destroyed yesterday in Japan's attack was the 7th Indpt SNLF Coy and not one of the support LCUs.

Note: Saw something in the reporting that loos weird. Yesterday CV Zuikaku was reported sunk due to Mk 14 torpedo near the northern Marshalls. I re-watched the movie and no attack took place there. It's not in any report. Many days ago there was a 1-hit on a CV I think was reported as Shoho. I don't even recall without looking it up if it was a sub or aircraft. I reported this to Mike in an email as a possible synch issue, but asked him not to tell me either way. So right now the VPs include over 300 for Z.

There has also never been any report of any of the three CVEs hit in the Marshalls at the beginning of SNAGGLEPUSS, so I can only assume all made port, even though at the time I would have doubted any could. Strange game sometimes.

The Siege of Chungking Begins

1) Let's get right to it.

Two immense forces ram together in dense urban terrain at the capital of China. Japan has amassed 17 divisions plus thousands of AFVs and a huge arty force after carefully severing Chungking from supply sources and doing bombing prep for months against almost no CAP. Long ago in the general retreat from China the decision was made to leave behind all Chinese AA and arty and position it in the capital. Also, a fair number of PPs have been spent as available to increase Chinese leaders in the infantry corps to at least 50. Finally, forts were built to Level 7 and stopped due to the inability to get the 25,000 minimum supply on hand to continue to build. The downside of abandoning LI supply points like Changsha so early.

Japan attacks. The size and scope of the two forces is immense, probably the largest I have ever seen playing AE. The Allies can get a bigger stack together with the Sovs at the party, but in a combined sense this one is probably the king.

I don't know what Mike thinks about the results. I don't have the next turn today, and we've been carping at each other a bit over weekend turn-arounds since I started the other game with Cliff. Normally I would have a turn by the time the NFL begins. Today I don't. I do see a fair bit of traffic in his AAR, so perhaps he's mulling.

The outcome in the first day went very well for China. Much better than I feared. I had forecasted to myself at least a two level Fort degredation; that didn't happen. I knew Level 7 plus the Chinese arty would do some damage, but I had thought more 15000-20,000-type Japanese losses. It appears that the Japanese combat engineer count was insufficient.

Chinese supply is going to be flatlined after today. But the Forts remain, so at least one more highly damaging Japanese attack will be needed to get traction. The disabled numbers are simply staggering for both sides, but more for Japan.

And, of pretty big import in this, a VP-focused game, Chinese losses count only 50% of Japanese losses on a device basis. I don't know what the VP curve will do today, but it will be a good day for the Allies after a string of bad going back to the loss of the USN carriers.

Without further ado, the battle:

2) In comparison, the rest of the map is a snoozer. Intense sub activity in and around Moulmein results in no hits to either. The reinforcements for that base are safely ashore. I see 7 LCUs of unknown make-up. The Chinese are blocking part of the roads to there from Bangkok, with more coming (slowly) but I'm sure the TFs delivered enough supply to do the job.

3) Rangoon is bombarded again by the very large IJN TF in residence. Only 13 Allied casualties and no supply destroyed. The LCUs in the Rangoon stack are mostly at local forts Level 2 and a lot of the bombardment is from DDs.

4) This one got an email from Mike with the movie file. I think he suspected a synch bug. I said no, but no more info. This is an SST delivering more troops to Wewak. Even with the base Japanese and troops present he can't see an icon. Interesting to me. Maybe everyone already knew this, but I did not.

5) Subs sink two patrol craft, one near Balikpapan and the other in Kwaj harbor. The large tanker TF heading NE from Balikpapan is prosecuted, but all are duds.

6) Back in Burma, sweeps shift to Prome and Ramree. Port Blair gets only one medium attack. Tojos are seen for the first time in Burma. I expect waves of them soon as we are playing with non-historic R&D. F-14 Tomcats are not available to counter.

7) Soerbaja gets punishing bombing and some CAP is lost. The Fort level goes to 6 today and building will cease. Supply has been pulled down under 10,000 in the fort-building and air strikes with B-17s. I think the heavies will look to move to Rabaul. That AF goes to Level 5 today, supply is lavish, and av support is being doubled from NE Oz in the next four days. Daily recon of Truk is being performed and some patterns are emerging.

8) The Allied stack at Rongoon takes about 300 casualties while exacting normal losses from AA. The Big Stack is on the road to Pegu, having unpacked in record time.

9) Japan attacks the small force holding Tavoy; the Allies counter-bombard. Tavoy is turning out to be a side-show right now. Maybe more later if more can be forced in there after things at Pegu are resolved one way or the other.

Ground combat at Tavoy (54,60)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 5837 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 209

Got the next turn. I don't understand the VP results. Tracker below. The LCU columns? I looked back at the combat report and only about 400 total Allied troops were killed in all other events, including Tavoy and from bombing. Either the combat report has massive FOW, or I don't understand the Chinese VP ratio rule.

There's definitely some FoW in the combat report, but it looks about right... It says you lost 18 VPs' worth. In the combat report, you "lost" 10.something VPs (at 12:1).

Not sure what you mean by 12:1. But I just got out my calculator and did the nums. I should have seen 102 VPS lost by Japan, so the number is indeed FOWable. I guess the total casualties made me a little excited. I wonder how the army would feel about an entire ID of devices and men gone for less than the value of a carrier? [:)]

On the good side, the Hiyo was confirmed sunk today from the IO battle with Wasp. It's most of the IJN swing to the bad.

Lokasenna -> RE: Nothing Up My Sleeve: Magical Moose Tricks--Bullwinkle58 vs.1EyedJacks (9/22/2013 9:27:10 PM)

Oh, you meant his losses. I was looking at yours.

The big thing about rebuilding IDs isn't the HI cost so much, it's the time to do it. IMO.

Two features strike me.

1. A substantial increase in enemy land device losses. It went up by over 90 points, far outstripping the Allied increase.

2. A substantial increase in Japanese VPs gained from sinking Allied ships. So large is the increase that it negates and even reverses the benefits gained from the Chungking combat.

Also note you had a few Allied aircraft losses. Remember you lose 2 VP per destroyed 4E.

As to the 21:1 reference in a subsequent post, it refers to 1 VP lost per 12 Chinese destroyed devices.

From the epic scale of the battle my first, non-numerical reaction was for more than 90ish. After doing the math I see that Tracker is, as always, correct on this.

On the ships, it was Japan that lost three (2 PBs, one of 4 VP, one of 2 VP, plus Hiyo finally recognized from sinking on 7/17) and had the VP hit. I haven't lost a ship is a few days, which is unusual for me. [:)]

Your point on 4Es pulled me up and made me go look and you are correct. I have been using the 4Es very aggressively in a before-the-bases-are-lost mode to hit economic targets. But they do add up. The British models in particular are pretty worthless un-escorted and I have frittered them away in Burma. On one hand I don't like only 4Es getting the VP penalty. Mavis models consumed as much or more industrial output as a B-17 but are only worth the VPs of a Nate as I read the manual. OTOH a 4E often has a crew of up to ten men, so losing one should hurt a lot.

My initial reaction was "only a 10VP swing!!" after an epic land battle with 40,000+ Japanese casualties. But the math is the math.

The 12:1 is of course also true. I have trained myself to think of it as a 2:1 ratio (12 Chinese for 6 Japanese devices), but in isolation Chinese are 12 per VP.

July 29, 1942

Bomb-a-Rama

A very quiet day-after-the-one-before. Pieces moving into position.

1) Numerous ineffectual sub attacks and ASW responses. USS Tarpon actually goes into the harbor of Toyohara and duds on a massive xAK. Other action near Truk, Balikpapan, Marcus Island, Donggala, and Namu..

2) The USN bombards Wewak. 19 Port hits and 3 supply, but the troops are unhit. CA/CL/CL/DD/DD force from Rabaul.

3) Most of the air action is at Rangoon on the stack. Over 400 casualties. When the time comes to attack Rangoon they may be too far gone. The flip side is the Big Stack, out on the road hurrying to join other forces one hex north of Pegu, is either unseen or unseen and ignored. But they are left alone. Rangoon/Pegu is going to a very interesting base inside a week.

4) Damage at Soerbaja stubbornly keeping the Forts there one point from Level 6. AF bombed again, getting a Hudson. All but the damaged B-17s have been moved to Rabaul. Trying to be patient there. Want a max effort raid on Truk harbor. Doubling of av support is still 2-3 days away at sea.

5) Chungking is swept (no CAP) but only bombed by 12 Sallys and about 14 Anns. Odd to me given that the battle is going to be a supply story.

6) PBang gets heavy bombing yet again, but nothing dents supply there at all. It's still at 215,000, and there is heavy AA as always. One lone Dutch Big Nose bomber recons Benk. and sees the Japanese stack, or at least part, still sitting there. But recon on Sumatra is almost non-existent, so there could be units marching around to the north and Djambi.

7) Allied bombardment at Tavoy is the only ground combat. No results.

8) Building:

Tillamook expands airfield to size 3
Adak Island expands port to size 5
Kona expands airfield to size 4
Taung Gyi expands airfield to size 6

No Night Bombing Today

I have the next movie in house and will watch it now. The game schedule has evolved as Mike's work has gone to a compressed week. We won't have turns on Monday-Wed. most of the time, and the weekends will be crowded. This is one reason I started a second game with Cliff/Lokasenna; his schedule is more even every day. This is the Tracker VP screen after the most current movie.

VPs are somewhat of a briar patch given that FOW makes ships move on and off the Sunk rolls, and base building multipliers happen off-stage unless one goes digging. I just trust the math in the game and in Tracker. The big initial battle of Chungking was a good lesson for me in tempering emotional reactions to a big win with how they actually move the VP needle.

Situation at Eniwetok

Just a screenie to show the submarine deployments around Eniwetok. Intel received yesterday that a piece of an ID is aboard ship headed there. Most of these subs are repositioning to surround the island, or to interdict the W-E route from Truk/Ponape. Some are S-boats with fish that actually work.

Eniwetok has Forts 3 + 68% with two Seabee units digging like crazy. It has 53,000 supply. Unfortunately, combat power is lacking. Only pieces of two para units, and a frag of the combat engineers mostly over on Roi-Namur. The only good news is it's not overstacked, while a landing force will be. US forces are about 5800 men.

July 30, 1942

Locked, Not Yet Cocked

1) The Big Stack marches fast. It has reached the standing stack one hex north of Pegu on the road. This is what's in the combined stack. It will march on the objective immediately.

[image]local://upfiles/31387/B5074F1662B14014AC213E94A3B46D47.jpg[/image]

2) Air battles over Rangoon. The Allies get a set of bombing missions in with 9 escorts, a luxury. Tojos and Zeros on CAP. One plane lost each side (1 Tojo, 1 Hudson) and one AF hit with several enemy planes damaged. Then a strato-sweep of three P-38s tangles with the Tojos, downing one for no losses. A second, larger bombing mission attrits the Dinahs at Rangoon, does minor damage to runways, and costs three bombers.

Allied troop bombing is lighter than recently, with several IJA bombers lost and less than 50 casualties. Port Blair gets a heavy strike, but the AF is cleaned out right now except for Beauforts. One is damaged.

The battle for Rangoon will start in the next couple of days. I have no good read on how it will go. I think I have enough to take Pegu, and not to take Rangoon if he can continue to get supply in by sea. I have no good answer for that right now. My air forces are just not up to it, nor are most of the subs. But I could be way off base.

3) SS KIX hits a very large xAP passing Balikpapan. Don't know where bound for, but I suspect whatever is onboard will participate in the siege at Soerbaja. That base goes to Forts 6 (finally) and will now focus on supply accumulation.

4) Minor bombing at Chungking, but not what I would expect. Supply there goes down to 420 and stays there for two days. Organic is 400/day and LI is still producing while Resources last (about 100,000). Transports from Ledo should be carrying 50% loads, but none has been delivered for two days. I must not understand that rule.

5) As mentioned up-thread, intel received that a portion of an ID is bound for Eniwetok. A USMC Buffalo unit, the last on the map, is snuck onto Eniwetok as a trap. But Japan almost never fails to sweep when bombing, and this time is no exception. Zeroes come first and one fighter each side is downed. There are no bombers today.

6) Powder kept dry at Rabaul. Av support is coming ashore and AF is at Level 5 + 8%. I have had some "apparent" luck in AI games with 4E coordination by putting all at a base under same HQ, so I spend a little PP today to get all the Forts under Eleventh AF HQ coverage. Superstition? The Forts continue to repair. When I can fly them together on Truk they should be about 30 planes. Ships come in and out of Truk like a highway, so timing is important.

7) Word in reports that BB Kongo was sunk on May 21 in battle that cost POW. Had thought it was Haruna. I'll take Kongo.

8) Japan attacks at Tavoy, dropping forts to zero but not taking the base. The three Chinese LCUs near Moulmein are near attack position; Tavoy is of less importance since Japan began running supply to Rangoon at sea.

Ground combat at Tavoy (54,60)

I'm thinking of opening an irregular thread once I come up with a clever title...

RE: Tracker VPs - The total seems to be imported directly from the in-game totals, which I trust. However I've noticed that Tracker's sunk ships VPs can wildly differ from the in-game VPs, as well as from what I suspect is reality. I don't trust Tracker's sunk ships list in the slightest. If anything, it's a detriment to my information IMO. The air losses and LCU losses also appear to be taken straight from the in-game screens, which seem to be nearly 100% if not 100% accurate, even through FOW.

Intel Confirmed

1) Sub action, including confirmation of the ID frag loaded for Eniwetok.

--S-40 duds on a nice xAK near Donggala. So long as Soerbaja is open the fuel from Balikpapan is vulnerable.

--Tarpon duds on a huge xAK due north of Sapporo. TMs ordered to re-routine all fish.

--Trigger duds on a passing amphib TF a hex from Marcus I. The vector and the presence of an LSD are solid evidence this is the landing force for Eniwetok.

Sub attack near Marcus Island at 118,86

Japanese Ships
AMC Nosiro Maru
LSD Shinshu Maru
xAP Huzi Maru
DD Murakumo

Allied Ships
SS Trigger

-- In the harbor at Toyohara, Dutch Harbor-based S-44 takes two hits, one penetrating. In the afternoon she sinks one tormentor, PB Aso Maru #7

--The supply lifeline from Calcutta to Chittagong, feeding the whole Rangoon effort, is penetrated by I-16. DD Foxhound, with early-war ASW excellence, hits twice, one penetrating.

2) Heavy bombing efforts on Soerbaja and PBang. Soerbaja is now buttoned up, supply going to the storehouses and engineers fully devoted to fixing emerging damage. PBang has snuck up into the 30%s on the next Fort level, but it is slow going. The red stack at Benk. continues to sit.

3) Allied escorted bombers hit Rangoon AF again, doing light damage. Recon shows 8% damage before this. The only goal is supply burn and perhaps some degradation of 2E operations on the stack outside the city. Focus will shift to Pegu in the next few days.

Morning Air attack on Rangoon , at 54,53

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid spotted at 23 NM, estimated altitude 24,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 5
A6M3 Zero x 4
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 22
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 13

Allied aircraft
Mohawk IV x 8
B-24D Liberator x 3
B-25C Mitchell x 3
B-26B Marauder x 3

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
Mohawk IV: 1 destroyed
B-25C Mitchell: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
B-26B Marauder: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged

Runway hits 2

--Japanese bombing of the stack is definitely less effective than several days ago. Fatigue must be a factor now, as well as accumulated damage from AA. Troops losses are about 100 plus five guns. About 20 bombers are damaged or destroyed. In one sweep a single P-38 takes on the Tojos, downs one, and gets away.

4) Eniwetok gets swept, but the Buffalos have mostly returned to Wake. The Seabees dig.

5) Chungking again is tickled by air strikes. Don't know his thinking here right now. I'm blind out in the countryside. More troops could be coming, or the stack might just be resting.

6) Example air strike on secured Soerbaja. Not a good ROI to me.

Morning Air attack on Soerabaja , at 56,104

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 35 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 25
G3M2 Nell x 36
G4M1 Betty x 31

Allied aircraft
P-38E Lightning x 1

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 7 damaged
G3M2 Nell: 1 destroyed by flak
G4M1 Betty: 2 damaged

No Allied losses

Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 1

7) The B-17s at Rabaul continue to rest and repair. Re-counted and full strike will be more like 48 planes. Some are 15-17 days out on repair; won't wait for them. Have daily search and recon of Truk from Rabaul. It's a highway.

8) Japan persists at Tavoy and the base falls. The defenders retreat north. They will march to join the Chinese, but may be caught from behind. Overall the Tavoy foray was a mistake at this phase of the war.

Ground combat at Tavoy (54,60)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Japan Strikes First

Playing the AI, I always thought that August 1 was an important date. Some think 1/1/43, but by the first of August I usually felt as if I had recovered the momentum lost on 12/7 and could credibly defend myself everywhere even if major campaigns were too hard. This game has gone far differently than any AI game, but in it I feel as if the wheels are back on the bus, even a little in the air war. I'm about to start getting P-38s in usable numbers, and a month from the P-40K. Today I saw my first Zero M3 models, but even so the air war isn't as hopeless as it was 60 days ago. Here and there I'm able to afford a bit of escort for bombers, which helps accuracy a great deal.

1) Mostly the turn was troop attack after troop attack, and AF attack after AF attack. I won't detail them; they were in the usual places with the usual results. Japan is steadily drawing ahead in the loss ratio, and a lot are 2Es, with the HI implications of that. At Rangoon three P-38s faced over 25 sweepers including Tojos and new model Zeroes. Two were lost, but they downed a couple of their own. Three Liberators try to bomb Rangoon port after recon showed merchants disbanded there. Two are lost for some port damage. Three B-17s do the same from Chittagong and score minor damage for one Fort lost.

2) Two PTs from Soerbaja sortie on Banjo. where a large transport TF was sighted. No hits, but the TF is forced to get underway and the attack provides a solid DL for follow-on air strikes with everything at Soerbaja capable of hitting ships. Two 500 lbs bombs are put into a large xAP and sunk ship noises heard. The LCU lost looks like a base unit of some kind.

3) To mix it up I put a full squadron of Cats at Rabaul on max range torpedo naval. Too far, as CAP at Truk intercepts and shoots one down, but I plan to do this sometimes at shorter range to close the gaps north of Rabaul. The B-17s are almost ready to fly.

4) ASW action at Eniwetok by an IJN TF sitting in the harbor waiting for the landing. Nothing hit. More subs are now local to Eniwetok. The landing will be tomorrow or the next day. Netty strikes shifted to anti-troop today from AF/supply attacks. Very minor damage and 5 casualties.

Perch shoots at the biggest AO I've ever seen near Roi-Namur, and duds. Three AOs in TF headed west.

5) At the end of the day it looks like Japan decides that all the massive troop bombing at Rangoon must have taken those guys out of the war. There is no indication at all that Japan sees what's approaching Pegu. Instead it attacks the Rangoon stack, gets bad odds, burns up a lot of supply, and sets the table for Pegu in two days most likely.

Pegu Stack Is Seen

1) Up north, Dutch Harbor sub squadron continues to harass as S-44 puts a fish into xAK Nissan Maru north of Wakkanai.

2) Dense subs around Eniwetok spar with incoming TFs. Drum encounters this one, but misses with four torpedoes. This could be a bombardment group for Eniwetok, Wake, or Roi-Namur, or a support SAG.

4) Eniwetok is swept multiple times (no CAP) and 2Es troop bomb again. 18 casualties. Forts are about 20% from leveling; the Seabees are making 8% per day. It'll be close.

5) The ghosts of SNAGGLEPUSS make me smile a little. A dedicated TF lands on Bikini, taking 192 casualties in the landing. All that's there are a few Support squads of Paras; all the shooters were withdrawn. There's no supply. Japan uses two DDs and an xAK to land 88th Naval Guard unit that will need on-going supply again. The base falls to the Shock attack; 44 men surrender. I guess Mike likes a tidy island chain. [:)]

6) At Rangoon a 25-ship bombardment group blasts away from the harbor on the Allied stack. 25 total casualties ashore. I think this force has been there all along, which means it's re-arming from Rangoon supply. A lot of shells for not much.

7) The Pegu-bound stack is attacked three times with medium-size 2E raids. About 100 casualties. It's marching in Combat so there's no mode knock. At the start of the turn it was 18 miles from the objective.

A force of about 500 AV is moving independently down the road parallel to the main road from Toungoo. It could cross the river to threaten Chiang Mai or move to secure the hexside north of Pegu on the road once the stack moves into the city. I'm leaning toward the latter.

8) Two Soerbaja PTs move to Banjo to attack the TF still unloading. Battle is declined, but the PTs run into this on the way home. Akagi/Kaga datum re-established. I think these guys are headed to the IO to support Rangoon. Today Wasp is fully repaired at Colombo, and two RN carriers are almost well. Another RN BB (Valiant) has joined the fleet there, and the CAs are nearly ready.

9) Many AOs seen in Truk harbor and unknown number of ships disbanded, so the B-17s are ordered to go. The raid is fairly successful. Two B-17s are lost on the way home. The ARD hit is perhaps the most significant. I think it's the only yard between the Marshalls and the HI for major flooding repair.

The Rock of Eniwetok

Mike's work schedule is playing havoc with the game. We got in a turn. Today he is off to a training evolution and we may not get another until next week. My other game is hurtling along (already in January 1942) so I'm getting my AE fix. But this one has a lot of interesting things about to happen.

1) Marshalls. Busy, busy. In the night phase the landings at Eniwetok begin. As expected from intel it's at least a big piece of the 52 ID. With a combat engineer unit. Japanese casualties seem to indicate poor prep. This will factor in later. There is no heavy bombardment. Perhaps he thinks the bombing did enough.

--The Shock attack is an utter disaster for Japan. Maybe the worst ratio I've ever seen. Forts are a huge factor; they did not reach Level 4 for this turn. They were at 98%. The AV on the island is tiny; really just pieces of the para units and less than half the regiment, much of which is on Roi-Namur, trapped. As above, I think prep was low, and fatigue from ship time might have also been a factor. But the attack is bad for Japan.

2) SNAGGLEPUSS remnants

--Another nice action in a ratio sense. Four fat xAKs unload at dot base Ailinglaplap south of Kwajalein. It was held by 45 men with light sub-delivered supplies. Japan loses 210 men in the landing, and 120 more in the Shock attack by Sasebo 8th SNLF.

3) Japan has for sure seen the Pegu force coming now. Franitc levels of heavy bombing cost about 450 casualties. I hope they're there tomorrow. A typical attack:

Afternoon Air attack on 15th/1st Punjab Battalion, at 56,52 , near Pegu

No Allied losses

Allied ground losses:

Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 8 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

4) Rangoon is bombarded again by the "harbor horde". Mostly DDs. Allied casualties 35 men.

5) The Akagi/Kaga TF hangs around near Soerbaja. It is approached by PTs again, but no shooting.

6) Ten B-17s from Rabaul hit Truk, but the ships have been cleared out and only a few port hits are recorded. Fairly heavy CAP.

7) Building:

Eniwetok expands fortifications to size 4
Johnston Island expands port to size 2
Ledo expands airfield to size 6

8) Confirmation on one CVE sunk in the June 20th battle in the Marshalls. Hosho (?) I think.

I am going to suspend posting Night Bombing results for now. I think I have made my point that they are not overpowered, at least in 1942 with small numbers of planes. They rarely do enough non-Manpower damage to justify the missions.
