After nearly ten years, this is still my all-time favorite game. I never tire of it, as it offers so many possibilities in battles and campaigns. As a long-time vet in OOB design, I still can't resist making a few tweaks here and there as I discover info through various sources.

Talon_XBMCX -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/2/2012 3:16:39 AM)

One of my fav's as well. Still playing this along with a couple of other SP title. Some games just never get old ... [:)]

KG Erwin -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/3/2012 4:23:02 AM)

The thing about SPWaW that fascinates me is not in the tank vs tank battles, but campaigns that involve primarily infantry forces. Of course, I focus on the Pacific theater, in which armor played an important but secondary role. For the USMC, the Shermans and the flame tanks were vital in destroying Japanese fortifications in the "corkscrew and blowtorch" techniques in the 1944-45 battles. This type of war was a bloody slugfest, but the Marines fought two different wars from 1942-45. In 1942-43, it was primarily in the jungles of the southern islands, in which the Japanese still relied on the offensive. In 1944-45, the fighting switched to amphibious assaults on barren rocky islands and attrition war. The 1942-45 USMC campaign is a tough one to get through, and using "low-carnage" settings makes it even tougher. I end up definitely appreciating the Marines' reorganizations through each year to upgrade their firepower, and one fully realizes why the Marines did this.

In the past 5 years, the Enhanced SPWaW crew built upon the earlier work I did on the USMC OOB, and I must say that it is now one of the the most historically accurate OOBs in any tactical game. This is primarily due to the magnificent work of author Gordon Rottman in his detailed reference books which served as our sources. I bought nearly every book Mr. Rottman wrote on the USMC in WWII, and these volumes are valued parts of my military history collection.

I always go back to it.

This is my favorite game of all time. It is simply excellent... and I play it often... would love to see the graphics updated...

planner 3 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/4/2012 2:55:18 AM)

Is there another game ? Not for me, I have a recent release (Panzer Corps) which I enjoy, but I still prefer SPwaw in all its Mods.

Exactly! One of the best games, equal to the brilliance of Sid Meiers Civilization I ... but the graphics just don't cut it for me anymore.
Every once in a while old SP players popup, but the sad thing is that there's no hint whatsoever of an update for this game... [:(]

JEB Davis -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/5/2012 2:43:56 AM)

Play every day.

Korpraali V -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/5/2012 3:36:27 PM)

I had a few years break from SPWAW. But now I'm starting again. Looking good [8D]

Josh -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/7/2012 9:08:41 AM)

Our fellow wargamers at the German Strategycon forums are still playing and writing AAR's too.

i am still playing.

Falcon1 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/31/2012 8:43:53 PM)

Still play pretty often. There is no better game in the genre.

If you haven't tried the updated graphic files in the enhanced mod then give it a shot. They are a bit better than the originals. You don't have to use the new OOBs if you don't want to, so you will still be compatible with all the old scenarios. The graphics, sounds, text files, can all be installed separately.

The graphics are completely adequate for a game of this type. Besides, wargamers aren't supposed to be concerned with fancy graphics!

planner 3 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (10/31/2012 10:41:51 PM)

Hi Falcon: I can compare SPwaw graphics against Panzer Corps Wermacht and I'll vote for the old girl (SPwaw) again. I looked high and low for a good looking game and in my opinion (FWIW) Silent Hunter Cdrs, edition gets my vote. As for updated versions you don't have to go far from SPwaw for that. Scenarios aplenty are also available for every version. Yeah ! I quess I'm a SPwaw fan, yeah and I can play from either side also.

OldSarge -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/17/2012 11:55:16 PM)

I bought Steel Panthers 1 back in '95 and I'm still playing it's descendant SPWAW and probably will continue to do so as long as my 32-bit XP box holds out. I haven't found anything that handles tactical squad level action quite as well as SPWAW. This is one of the few games where real world tactics actually work in the game.

Still, I really do wish that there was the possibility that this old classic would get updated.

sami heimola -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/18/2012 10:23:27 AM)

Well I still play this at times. Only 1 bad thing is that Matrix didn't updated maps bit wider (like WinSPWW2 have)[:(]...

But WaW have longer maps:

WaW map size: 240x100 (12KM x 5KM, 60sqKM)
WW2 map size 200x160 (10KM x 8KM, 80sqKM)

But WaW has a 100 formation limit which may keep players from fully using a 12KM front.
WW2 goes up to 200 formations.

Cross

planner 3 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/24/2012 2:28:40 AM)

Cross I may be corrected but I believe you now can have 200 units per side in SPwaw now.

Cross -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/24/2012 12:51:39 PM)

Hey Planner,

This is my understanding of the game limits:

SPWaW Formations: 100
SPWaW Units: 400

SPWW2 Formations: 200
SPWW2 Units: 500

I got those figures from the SPWW2 Game Guide 4.0, and the SPWaW Players Manual version 5.0

I'm quite sure the SPWW2 numbers are up-to-date, less sure about the SPWaW numbers.

cheers,
Cross

planner 3 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/24/2012 7:39:05 PM)

Cross You are probably correct, yet this old memory bank of mine says there was an update somewhere around the update of the game to 8.x, I'm searching but the dearch function stinks here. If I should run aCROSS it I'll drop a note here .

Falcon1 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/26/2012 8:22:06 PM)

Shouldn't be too hard to test this out. Just start a battle with 10000 points and see how many formations the game lets you buy. I'll do it when I get home from work.

m10bob -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/28/2012 6:42:55 PM)

Of course I am still playing..

Alpha77 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/29/2012 2:25:21 PM)

I fired it up again after 2 years or so.Was quite active in PBM back in the days too. I wonder if there still people playing PBM ? And what version I have H2H 7.1 and 8.4 (enhanced) which should be the latest ? My old forum nick was Frank W. btw.

I played Stalingrad campaign in H2H there were a few errors though - examples AT guns behave as bunkers or a special T34 type which has an MG instead of main gun (I could not find that model at all in the database so it must be designers added one)....I tried to fix the T34 error cause later int he game it seems this model is used massevely (until the pocket scens only very few of the wrong T34 showed up so no big deal). While I fiddled with editor and copied the "corrected" scen back in the campaign folder I ****ed something up it seems. I miss no the LAST scen of the campaign (the option staying in Stalingrad). Can someone send it to me ? Please PM me.

It seems this T34 model (T34 M42E ??) has a bit better armor, so it often bounces 88mm shells [X(]

planner 3 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (11/29/2012 9:11:27 PM)

Lately I left the Old GIrl to play Panzer Corp, but alas I found their method of utilizing GME for various mods to be too confusing which relegated this old man to the Vanilla version updated to 1.11 so I probably will remove it and stay with SPwaw and its affilliated discs. I should have said that trying to install a mod in GME was a flipping headache, and the game itself installed peculiar. Both MATRIX and slitherine were helpful but .......... getting too old for this and time is flying so its back to my old love SPwaw. Amen brother

Alpha77 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (12/1/2012 7:53:28 PM)

To my above thread: I found out I have the camp on my 2nd pc so have the scenario I was missing.

Also while I tried to correct the error in one of the Stalingrad scens I came to the idea to make a single scen from it. And add some goodies. And the best: Instead your elite core force you now have a reinforced Alpini company and a huge bunch of other Italian + German toys to play with. I post the scen in the scen thread. However it was made with H2H so maybe some errors in other versions.....

Heres the scen:

http://spwaw.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26867&sid=b25127d74df8a7f251962ad471860f84

I can also report that I saved one half of the 6th army - means I ended the Donnerschlag fictional part of the camp [:)]

@ planner: What is GME?

Ooops! Sorry I forgot this for a few days. I was in fact limited to 100 formations.

planner 3 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (12/4/2012 6:03:59 PM)

ALPHA GME short for JSGeneral MOD Enabler, used to allow various user camps/scenarios to be loaded without disburbing the vanilla version of said game, European gamers seem to love it, to each his own. Go to Slitherine for more info on same.. adieu

JEB Davis -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (12/7/2012 4:52:57 AM)

Danke, Herr Falconi.

soldier1 -> RE: Who Is Still Playing SPWAW? (12/7/2012 11:26:58 AM)

no doubt one of (if not the best) tactical war games around. A true classic but alas i don't play it anymore. Perhaps I'm shallow but its just too bloody well dated and obsolete for me now and i can't really go back.

To Planner 3 (is it Chief ?). GME may take a little bit of time to understand but its really not that hard to work out. Put a bit of mental effort into its set up and its simple to use. I'm no fan of it either but I use it for my modded eqp file and its much better than having multiple installs.
