VonFrag -> How Best To Use IL-2's? (10/24/2012 3:19:03 AM)

AE, latest patch, allies........Soviets activated in mid 42.....[:D]. Oh yeh, playing against the AI. Anyways I saw all of those Sturmoviks sitting there and started licking my chops. I put them on ground attack, 1000 ft as that is what they were designed to do...and they were slaughtered by flak. True, the pilots were not very well trained, so I upped the altitude to 6000 ft. They still attract flak like magnets, more so than my other level bombers set at the same altitude. Also with 2 100 kg bombs, 80 or so IL-2's cause maybe 20 casualties, sometimes none. My groups are better trained now, should I move them back to low level again? What is the best way to use these beasts?

Good question. The one time I had Sovs activated I was outrunning Il-2s all the time anyway, so I heardly ever used them.

Cheers,
CC

don't expect them to come any close to real life effect/use in the game. The only time I had the Soviets activated and could have used the IL-2 I had nearly no use for it.

Thats too bad. They should act more like fighter bombers and would be effective strafers before dropping bombs. I have two squadrons of fulmers at port blair set to naval attack, 1000 ft. They strafe before dropping bombs and are very effective. A shame really.

Thank you for the input.

I've always thought they should be classified more as a DB than a LB. I didn't think about FB so that may fit but may open another can of worms as it'd now be able to assume fighter type roles like sweeps/escorts. One reason you're seeing more in losses w/ them might be that their durability is lower than other LB so you'd see more losses (I don't have game open at moment to see dur of planes to check). I've never had early soviet activation so I'm into the Il2m3/Il10 models plus highly trained into the 60's in exp/skills so that may be part of the problem as well as you do get more losses w/ those that have lower def skills. If I use a unit in ground attack, I normally try to have the bombing & def skills in the 60s plus exp near 60 & my losses are limited. I also think that some mods like DBB or others where AA is modified may also be a cause of the higher losses (you didn't say if it was stock scen or not)
I've always set all my bombers to 6k for ground pounding as that seems to cause the most damage for the least loss but still get ops losses due to damage a/c & write offs.

Fighter bombers in general just are not too effective in the game. They are really subject to flak and do not suppress it in return. Too bad. I have not gotten to try the IL2 but I suspect that with it's pitiful bomb load that it will be of little use. When attacking down low it is the bombs that do damage and strafing has little effect at all. The beaufighter was a big disappointment in the game for me and it is better armed, and carries better bombs than the IL2-and at least has some range.

Don't worry too much. Your T34-85s will carry the load well enough for you...
