Moscow, the Soviet counter attack has now stalled and the front goes over to the defensive, apart from local actions.

Tula: the Red Army arrives in the eastern outskirts of the city

Kharkov. The lower pincer makes progress, isolating three German regiments in the process.

South. The rout continues ....

So, we would like to take Leningrad back, but probably won't before the snow begins. We are gathering our forces for an attempt to storm Vyshny Volochek. The Moscow sector goes on the defensive and begins preparing fortifications in case the Germans renew their 1941 offensive. At Tula, heavy fighting is continuing, but it's indecisive at the moment. At Kharkov, the exciting push to end the war in February 1941 continues, but I suspect this will not happen. In this respect we are following Stalin's 1942 counter offensive, which chased overambitious objectives with wholly inadequate forces. Still, the morale gains will be handy. In the south I see no reason to shut down the offensive against the Romanians yet, although we won't be attempting to hold the ground we're winning. On the Nikolaev sector, the Caucus Front armies begin to curl around the flanks of the German forces defending the eastern approaches to the city.

My overall assessment, as with my game with Blubel (who seems to be of a very similar strength to Bomazz), is that it's there are equal chances to both sides. On the whole I expect not to able to snuff out the German offensive and go over to the attack myself in July: the Red Army is just too thin. I am counting on gaining weight quickly in the mud turns and building up the three or four reserve armies that are needed by June, but I not completely sure I'll be able to do that.

In a way this makes for a better game. One of the huge questions in this stage of the real war was working out which sector the enemy would attack, and usually WiTE doesn't mimic that nerve wracking business terrible well. I think this game might be an exception....

Peltonx -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/18/2012 11:04:35 PM)

He be attacking.

I would hold Leningrad and take Moscow then roll the south.

I dont think hes going to have that hard of a time if he sets things up right. SHC is very weak.

GHC will lose allot grinding around Moscow, but once thats done the south will be easy.

Be and interesting summer.

HITMAN202 -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/18/2012 11:11:32 PM)

But Pelton, he's got such an incredible buffer zone AGS. Hooooper can give up so much terrain. That's worth a lot of troops

hooooper_slith -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/19/2012 3:21:23 AM)

Gerald, I have an opening as a motivational speaker in the Krivoi Rog area. Would you be interested in that at all?

Scook_99 -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/19/2012 5:57:40 PM)

I like the Hitman attitude, but Kharkov to Rostov-na-Danu is not that far to go. Strategically, getting the Donetz Basin up to the Don River is very plausible. Getting up near Stalingrad will make this a tough game indeed, especially with what he has to do in the north to make the south more than a dream.

This is good stuff, two armies, nations, ideologies taken to the brink, and only one can score. Time to cue up the musical opening from Cross of Iron, or Flight of the Valkyrie, depending on how you think this will turn out.

Peltonx -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/19/2012 10:07:12 PM)

Space and manpower.

Don basin is worth 2X, (hmm more then that) Moscow and with the added space its over, if he knows how to defend.

He should and I am guessing will stay pocketing units until spring 43.

The south is pocket heaven in 42.

His 41 sets up 42. really like it but it would never work vs someone like Flaviusx,TDV and MT. They defend north to south.

I would expect to see 30 cv in front row near moscow at this time. Doesn't look good, but mybee Hoooper can save it.

Wuffer -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/19/2012 10:24:25 PM)

I had to admit that a sping offensive by GHC Kharkow--> down south was my first thought, too.
you look quite thin there.
The lack of 'valueable' German troops in the south didn't appear like an accident or oversight... but as a gambit. ?

Waht's the state of reconnaissance of mot. Inf. + Pz.-Div? And how much Inf. is hiding somewhere?

---
edit: interesting aar, btw

hooooper_slith -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/19/2012 11:34:44 PM)

I think it is a strategic trap. I would guess there is something like a panzer group in Germany, and possibly an infantry army.

Scook_99 -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/20/2012 2:39:15 PM)

Yeah, it looks a whole lot like a Von Manstein move, just a year ahead of Stalingrad. I am just not positive on shattering your minors, unless you can guarantee pulling this off as Germany. If he has 4 million Germans around in March, 1943, Bomazz will look like a stinking genius.

hooooper_slith -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/20/2012 3:46:36 PM)

I would have to co-operate to make that possible ...

Scook_99 -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/20/2012 8:09:03 PM)

And it is so obvious, I imagine you will hang out to destroy as much rail as possible before pulling into a more defensible position. Uncle Joe would hang out, though!

hooooper_slith -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/20/2012 8:19:28 PM)

It would be a giant repeat of the Izium bulge.

hooooper_slith -> RE: A tale of three cities: Soviets on the brink of defeat (hooooper vs Bomazz) (12/23/2012 3:27:23 PM)

Turn 33
Time is running out for the blizzard offensive, and in the south at least, Soviet attacks build up to a furious pitch.

But first, a state secret: one of my opponents weaknesses is a slightly careless approach to peripheral detail. We saw this with the failure to take the Baltic ports during Barbarossa, and there was also a failure to take the Onega coast during the Finnish drive down the eastern isthmus. This allowed the Soviets to slip a brigade behind the Finns, and it has been fighting a guerrilla war against the supply routes. Now in the recent retreat by 7th Army, it was possible to add a division to our long range raiding force.

On the Leningrad relief drive, more painfully slow progress.

In front of Vyshny Volochek, Akimov's 11th Army is now in position to launch an assault on 12th Panzer division.

Further south, the vanguard of Zakharov's Transcaucusus Front are entering the western Ukraine as the fighting builds to a mighty climax.

At Nikolaev, the position of the Axis is becoming critical. I think a pull back is imminent.

Turn 34

Leningrad: two attacks succeed, more fail. But for all those people who wished their U2 factories destroyed by Germans, consider just how deadly these flying sewing machines can be.

Moscow: the front line is almost straight, which is the condition of maximum entropy. We're going to dig in now.
