msudrala8 -> Troop movement (10/30/2012 11:01:21 PM)

I have a couple of skirmishes going on in China that badly need reinforced but I am not able to move anymore troops into the hex. Screen message says moving to but in the detailed unit screen the hex id being moved to does not show up. I can move all around them just not into the hex. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,

use the W hotkey to examine local hexside control. your reinforcing LCUs might be moving to enter the hex thru a controlled hexside.

Sorry I should have mentioned they are inland ground battles.

Hi JMalter,

Wouldn't you be trying to change the control of the hexside? I thought controlled hexsides only affected supply and retreat?

Cheers,

well in my current game i'm fighting heavily in east China, from Loyang to Wuchang & down to the coast at Wenchow.

often when i assign an LCU to enter an adjacent enemy hex, it won't go there directly, but will follow an easier path along road hex-sides.

This was an issue with older versions. Are you using the latest patch? A sometimes work around was to just set the unit to move to a hex one hex beyond your target hex. After that you can go back and then reset the unit to move in the correct hex. I don't know why but this worked for me.

I think I am struggling with something like that:

After having taken Changsha, I am approaching Siangtang and Hengyang, both heavily defended. Siangtang across the river from Changsha holds about 200k fresh Chinese troops recon suggests. Since the battle of Changsha saw a couple of my divisions roughed up, I decided to leave half of my strength (some 3k AV) in place as a blocking force to refit.

I send two division worth of units across the river on the main road NW to set up blocking positions against another 200k Chinese at Ichang and send a recon element plus to cut the supply lines in the rear of Hengyang.
The key was a flanking maneuver of another 2400k with plenty of heavy arty that also crossed and should turn SW to march across the rough woody terrain into Siangtang (tiny white arrow in the map), which should enable a safer river crossing for the rest.

I have been attempting the latter move for about 2 months or so. Thrice or four times it failed, with all units resetting or just marching back into Changsha first. I initially put that down to user fault, and tried again (using move stance, or even move in combat stance, leaving the arty behind, using follow or march...). Since I also change to the new betas regularly, I thought perhaps that may have something to do with it. Yet the latest and "best" result I have gotten was that of the 5+ divisions and 2 Tk Rgt worth of LCUs exactly 1 unit would finish the move in Siangtang, the rest turned back to Changsha to use the roads. I have no clue how to get this to work, but I have good feeling what the result would be if I left the 1 division to move in there, or even crossed with the whole 6k AV in force from Changsha instead. Not pretty, I bet.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated...
