dighost -> Damage inflicted? (12/16/2002 11:33:57 PM)

I just picked up this sim at E.B., and am running 2.11.

My question is what kind of damage is needed to sink a ship?

While I don't have a specific example in mind, generally when I attack a ship I will get one or two below waterline hits mixed in with belt armor hits (serious damage).

I understand that the size/displacement of the ship, its type and armor have a bearing-- but when its just a small cruiser shouldn't it sink in most cases?

Also, I had a sub hit a troop transport with two confirmed hits.. Still the ship managed to get away... am I missing something or is the damage modeling accurate?

Thanks!

p.s. this is the best sim I have ever played.

It may be that you have the "Fog of War" option on. Your pilots will report many more hits (and in some instances fewer) than what actually occured. Also, keep in in mind that you won't find out immediately if a ship sinks or not with "Fog of War" on - it may take up to 3 - 4 months.

That being said, I've found damage needed to sink ships vary greatly. I've seen CL's go down with 3-4 bomb hits or 2-3 torp hits.

Edit Note: PS Hope you're enjoying the game!

Also remember that Fog of War works both ways. Not only can your pilots/gunners over-report hits, they can also under-report as well, though not as likely.

Ahh.. I didn't think about the fog of war option-- and its possible effect...

Thanks everyone for the helpful answers!

For what its worth, I absolutely love this program, learning curve and all!

Cool, glad to hear you're loving it! Once you get through the learning curve you should give play by email a shot, most folk seem to love it.
