Jakub -> How to Close Assault? (12/17/2002 4:14:37 PM)

Guys,

Recently I am fond of playing on Russian side (despite 45 years of communism in Poland) and the thing I am missing is how to close assault (melee). The short key is "Alt+M" but the point is how to get into the same hex with enemy. Pointing the enemy with the cursor will lead to shooting at it instead of moving into the enemy hex.

Any help?

Regards,
Jakub

Have you ever tried to put more than one of YOUR units in the same hex?
Well, you’ve to do the same here, that is keep the “shift” key down and click on the hex where you want to move into.

It works - thanks
Looks like lot to learn yet

Jakub

Jakub, try that with one of your tanks, then hit "Alt-O" instead of "Alt-M". Most hilarious sound effect in the game. :p

... except for - was it Orzel?? - that did the "elephant stampede overrun" sound... :D

Keep in mind that if a unit has been moving, all that will result is a message that there is not sufficient movement to melee or over-run. A unit that fails to melee or over-run may suffer horribly from its failure. ;)

Go easy on the melee attempts. Handgrenades are very effective at range 1.

Hilarious? Those are people screaming in panic! You enjoy flamethrowers too, don't you? :)

Speaking of hilarious sound effects, I remember someone made an "elephant stampede" sound effect for the overrun. Now *that* was hilarious :D

Sadly I have no idea where that sound file can be found anymore.

Jakub -> Purpose of the question... (12/18/2002 6:13:25 PM)

Guys,

Thanks for response.

The point of the question was to try how it would look like in the game surroundings to close assault with Russians and Japaniese infantry. It is believed that these soldiers were very well trained for the hand-to-hand combat (especially Japaniese) and were close assaulting, relatively to other nations, much more often (Russians).

In many books I read the opinions that the Russians were even superior to German regular infantry soldiers in hand to hand combat. Simply, German put less emphasis on hand-to-hand training and more to "shooting".

Do you remember Close Assault in Squad Leader game? Russian "6-2-8" units (+ LMG) were really good against German "4-6-7", provided that they could get close enough to engage

:)

Russians and Japanese *do* get a melee bonus actually. Which is especially good to know if you're playing against them :)

Jakub,

The term 'close assault' in the game actually applies to infantry assaulting a tank or other armored vehicle. Melee or hand to hand is what you are looking for. My favorite thing is when a Spec Ops unit happens to appear inside an enemy gun position after infiltrating. The gun crew is swarmed over with knives. Never even knew the Spec Ops were there....

When they work, melee and over-run are among my favorite things to do in the game. Great fun.
