Just had my brother over for an extended session of Squad Leader, so I thought I would see if others here had certain games that you kept coming back to over the years.

The games I always tend to play, to the point where the counters, maps, etc are looking a little...used...would be:

Squad leader and gamettes (only using rules from original + Cross of Iron addon). I really love this game. One of my all time favourites. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1035/squad-leader

Panzerblitz + Panzer Leader. The amount of fun I have had with these...bloody hell. I could fill a book with the excellent battles had. And all the extra tank counters and so on that you can print out and use. Brilliant game. Russian Front: Simple, easy, elegant. An excellent corps/army level game of the entire Eastern Front. Very easy to pick up and play.

WW 2; European and Pacific theatres of operations. Again, simple (ish), elegant, and easy to get in and play while still retaining plenty of rules to cover every area, these games are a mainstay. I went all gung ho over World in Flames for a while, and my gaming friends also did after seeing the pretty counters. However, they soon just wanted to migrate back to old faithful, so these easily make the list. SL Cross of Iron was also my favorite.

I do play ASL.

Can't beat Panzer Leader or Panzerblitz.

Loved Squad leader, Crescendo of Doom was my favorite gamette.

Many happy hours playing Panzerblitz also.

Battle of the Bulge (1981) and Victory in the Pacific are probably tied for taking up most of my board gaming time.

Squad Leader was my first ever board wargame but overall (mainly due to time constraints)I've probably played Up Front more - do hope the long awaited 2nd edition eventually arrives.

In fact over the last few years my board wargaming has been more card wargaming including :

Down in Flames
Atlantic Storm / Pacific Typhoon
Naval Battles / Modern Naval Battles

World in Flames Global Campaign. We had it set up at a friends garage but after it ended he had to reorganize the garage so Im waiting to start a new campaign.

These days, not at all. I play lots of board games in FTF sessions, typically in groups. The most "war" like of them lately has been Pacific Typhoon.

The most commonly played non-war boardgame is Le Havre by far. I have to say, it's also the most enjoyable non-war game I've ever played.

Just got...

Bloody April Air War over Arras
Next war:Korea

Both through GMT hardship giveaway...The amount of contents and play aids and counters and a map on hardstock in the Bloody April game was outstanding. Seriously the box weighed a ton. Not only that I briefly beta tested the game but couldn't continue one I wasn't feeling well and two it was difficult trying to learn it when i didn't have a printer to print of the manual and play aids etc so it made testing it on Vassel even harder. The game is a winner though and I can't wait until Terry Simo releases his next game a solo boardgame called cactus Air Force.

Next War:Korea I got also because it seems to play well solo and for some reason I liked the sound of it even though Modern warfare isn't my thing, the advance rules looked superb. It also has received very good reviews.

I'm thinking of getting last night on Earth for my daughter for Xmas as she is Zombie mad. Also we can play it co op together.

Other games I have are The Battle for Normandy, Frontline D Day (both I've had for a couple of years and I'm yet to play them, I love looking at the counters though). I have Lord of the Rings boardgame plus The Really Nasty Horse racing game. Somewhere in the attic at my parents is Star Fleet battles, Kingmaker, Space Hulk first edition (mint condition), Car Wars and it's two expansions Truck Stop and Sunday Drivers.

Boardgames I want are...

1. A DVG leader game...
2. Fields of Fire
3. Omaha D Day
4. Cactus Air Force
5. Steel Wolves
6. Streets of Stalingrad (oooohhh...expensive)
7. GD'42
8. Deathride Kursk
9. Der Weltkrieg Simulation Series (supposed to be the best WW1 boardgame at division scale)

As you see a few are solo except Streets of Stalingrad and GD'42 and Deathride Kursk and Der Weltkrieg Simulation Series Western front, however they have good comments with regards to playing them solo. I wouldn't buy a boardgame that can't be played solo and be fun.

Where There is Discord. It's the only game I can play by myself in a decent amount of time.

Just finished a three day campaign of Gettsburg(This Hallowed Ground).  Now playing The Longest Day(Avlon Hill).  Into 8 June.  Both excellent games. I am more inclined towards the Civil War.  Last, but not least is DAK1 and DAK2.  Ill be playing it again after The Longest Day.

Most of my board gaming with friends is non wargame stuff, though I do play Twilight Struggle with one particular buddy (and I still need to bust out Hannibal : Rome vs. Carthage with him as well). So my war games tend to be solo, or lighter fare like Sekigahara and Julius Caesar. A lot of DVG games, Ambush! and a few others make up the current solo contingent.

I'm a fan of LNoE, but unless you've got a 3rd player you aren't going to be able to co-op it. One person has to play as the zombies, while the others are the heroes. And whoever is playing the heroes has to run 4 of them.

On the other hand, that shouldn't be a problem. The basic ruleset is pretty simple. Hell, a friend of mine has an 8 year old who often plays a hero in the game, and the only issues she ever comes across are the wording on a few of the cards.

Arctic thats a shame...damn..I thought it was a Co Op game full stop and the Zombies where AI controlledthrough a game mechanic.

Can you recommend any other games I could get her? I was thinking Arkham but I read it's abit complex?

It comes with like 50,000 cards for a bazillian different nations and such. A dream publication even with a leather bound 100 page rulebook still likely at this point.

I suppose I should mention there are $350,000.00 in pending lawsuits against the publisher (former publisher as technically a new company is publishing this now).. I wouldn't worry too much about that though... Its been covered to death all over the internet if you wish to waste 10 hours reading through 25 page threads arguing the points though...

Maybe one day - but I have a feeling that facebook, and boys, and girly stuff will have more appeal to my little cruisers, than a wargame [:(]

I'm shocked....absolutely shocked at all the WitPAE players who haven't heard of the wonderful titles offered by Avalanche Press. The Great War at Sea and Second World War at Sea series are to die for! Really great stream lined rules and not to much paper pushing. Wonderful games, I have most of the titles.

My favorite board wargames would have to be the American Heritage games of "Dogfight", "Broadsides" and "Battle-Cry", the 60's versions not that new crap stuff. I have so wanted a computer conversions of these classics but nobody seems to want to do them and they were great games in their time and still fun today for us old fogies.

Hmmm...how old is she and does she play many board games?

Arkham has a fair amount of rules overhead, BUT it's actually pretty simple from a turn to turn basis. The most important thing is that at least one player knows how to run the Mythos phase (which is where gates and monsters appear and move). So long as one person can do that, it's a great game.

I have the first game of that series and enjoyed it very much. I keep intending to buy more of the series, but since I never really mess with my boardgames anymore I just haven't spent the money.

I used to be absolutely addicted to board wargaming and still have a decent collection but can never talk anyone into a ftf game. So now the vast majority of my gaming time is taken up with WitPAE PBEM. I have the same opponent that I had in WitP where we had reached August 1944 before suffering a mass alien abduction of our pilots. Now we are in January 1944 and I intend to take this one into 1946... (I want to mess with the late war toys).

My favorites over the years:

ASL
Great War at Sea
Great Campaigns of the American Civil War series
Flattop
Air Force/Dauntless/Wings
Wooden Ships and Iron Men
Ironclads
Sixth Fleet series

and a non-wargame: Speed Circuit

Does anyone else think that todays games give less content than their forfathers?

As an example;

Panzerblitz, made in 1970. Contains the contents to create most battles from the entirety of the Eastern front (41 - 45).

'Panzer' from GMT games. Contains the content to simulate similar battles from 43 - 45. Expansions sold seperately. And this is one of the more content filled Panzerblitz knockoffs I have found out there.

Just noticed this when looking around to see if their had been a successor to Panzerblitz that would be good to buy.

Your correct, some game companies on some games do sell you less for more. Smaller boards. Covering a smaller portion of the battle/campaign, so they can sell you another future copy that covers the rest of the battle/campaign. Computer games company's do it all the time.[:-]

GMT games can't be faulted. The quality is top notch. They look after their customers. Panzer at present is getting rave reviews. When you think these games are a touch more expensive than a PC game or even the same price for what you get you can't complain...

I can play maybe once a year because of family but my board game is Star Fleet Battles. I'm not sure if that counts as a war game or not. It's all combat though.

I used to play that when I was kid.[:)] I came up with all kinds of new rules to give it a more grand strategy feel and we made our own ships and counters. The Klingons were always my favorite to play.

Just bought a copy of "Nations at War:  Valmy to Waterloo".  Quarterly turns. From compass games.  The only problem is a ship S-l-o-w.[>:]

Lately I have been getting into solitaire board war gaming. I am finding it sometimes more fun to fight against the board AI. Than against a computer AI that is sometimes predictable.

Recently I just got done with a game of The Barbarossa Campaign by Victory Point Games in which I loss to the board AI that was on a roll, and was pushing me back killing all my Panzer units. I really felt like cheating, but I didn’t because it was kind of fun watching my front line collapse to the Russian steamroller.

Also other solitaire war games that I like are No Retreat by VPG&GMT games and, Field Commander Napoleon by DVG.

Gazala (with errata) by the long vanished People's War Games. 1st class..........David Bolt was (is??) a great designer/developer. A grognard's grognard.[8D]
