Capt Hornblower -> Jap Blockbusters (11/29/2012 10:02:43 AM)

Can someone tell me why IJ carrier planes get to continue using 800 kg bombs in port attacks AFTER Dec. 7, 1941? Is this even historical?

Japanese TBs attacking ports use 800 kg bombs if average pilot experience is above 70.

I think all Japanese fleet carriers had at least some 800 kg bombs. It was not just Pearl Harbor.

They were called the Type 99 Number 80 Mark 5. They had AP fuses at Pearl Harbor, but they could also be used with GP fuses, which the Kates from Soryu and Hiryu did at Midway attacking the US base complex.

I think the Japanese probably expended most of their remaining stock at Midway (or they went down with the CVs). I can't find any mention of them being used post Midway.

They were made from remanufactured 16 inch BB shells.

they used these shells as GP bombs against Midway? Does that make sense to use an originally AP shell on an non armored land target? Wouldn't a 500kg GP bomb be a better choice than a 16" AP shell with a GP fuse? [&:] Interesting info though as I have never heard before them being dropped on Midway.

Well Shinano carried 54x 800 and 500kg, 216 x 250kg, 216x 60kg bombs.

Apparently there was some mention of their use at Midway in Shattered Sword. I found a post in another forum about it.

I don't think that's right. At Midway Japan used Type 98 model 80 bombs, that was 800 kg ordinary land bomb.

Japanese navy had several 800 kg bomb types, not just the one used at Pearl.
