Ok I won't attempt to say how great it was, mere words are inadequate.

But if anyone says anything negative about it, simply ignore the person, they are obviously crazy.

This film can't be rated on any normal scale.

And to think, there is one more to come.

Life is good.

pasternakski -> (12/19/2002 11:15:26 AM)

I hope that there are two to come. I want to see these people reach back and do "The Hobbit."

Matt Erickson -> (12/19/2002 12:51:57 PM)

So should I like buy the first one on DVD or can I just like umm...go watch the second?:confused:...oh yeah I never saw the first one:(

The second one assumes heavily that you have seen the first one. Be sure to watch it before going to number two. Even if you are a Tolkien "grognard," a lot of stuff won't make sense otherwise.

Twotribes -> (12/19/2002 8:09:30 PM)

Well the movie was good that is for sure. But a little point, it didnt follow the book much after the mid point. And the finally battle doesnt end per the book either.

But I liked it and will be seeing it again, my son hasnt seen it yet so have to take him at least ).

Charles2222 -> (12/19/2002 8:32:51 PM)

I liked when the first movie had Gandalf falling off the bridge in the self-sacrificial pose; quite impressive and surprising indeed.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (12/19/2002 8:43:51 PM)

For those, that insist on nit picking a film as good as this, git yer butt back into the game OOBs slave, you don't have time to recreate commenting on a film.

You are supposed to be busy over analysing wargames.

And who said you could take time off to watch that film anyway?

Peter Jackson said that the Two Towers movie would vary the most from the books, but felt it was in keeping with the feel(?) of Tolkien. I know the Fellowship of the Ring varied from the book in some ways, but I think it worked well; and considering the length of the books...there were going to have to be changes.

I would suggest you rent the Fellowship of the Rings first. :)

rbrunsman -> (12/19/2002 11:48:24 PM)

Haven't seen it yet, but I was worried about the Ent treatment. From the trailers I see that they are in the movie but were they represented well? If it only half-way follows the book it is still going to be all action, all the time. I can't wait to see it. My girlfriend is sick so we didn't go see it on opening night.

And by the way, why would you even think to watch Two Towers before FOTR? It's one story, not like the Star Wars trilogy(ies).
Haven't seen it yet, but I was worried about the Ent treatment.
The Ents rock ! When reading the books I envisioned them a bit more massive. But hell, they are really cool !

Kanon Fodder -> (12/20/2002 1:42:20 AM)

Saw it with my daughter on Opening Day

Magnificent!

Gollum/Smeagol is amazing.

Makes Yoda look like a puppet even if he was CG last time

Mister Lucas may as well throw in the towel now ...

Fallschirmjager -> (12/20/2002 2:04:08 AM)

I dont like Tolkein...will this change my mind?

I don't see how it would. You know, the book is always better than the movie (except Band of Brothers, IMHO).

I'm happy to hear about the Ents being good. I can't wait!

Marek Tucan -> (12/20/2002 3:50:26 PM)

We`ll have it here in JAnuary or February. Grr... But I`m looking forward to see it - I want to see Ents:))

Hmmmm the madness has taken its toll here in New Zealand and Peter Jackson is a national hero :)

Gotta see the first one before the Two Towers or you wont follow remember it is one story thats had to be split into 3 parts

scimitar -> (12/25/2002 3:56:49 PM)

I saw the movie yesterday with my son (during the same time my wife and my daughter were watching Harry Potter II...). Well, we really appreciated The Two Towers: it was really superb!
What a pitty to have to wait until end of 2003 to see the third part of the trilogy...

Paul Goodman -> (12/28/2002 5:05:10 AM)

The movie is absolutely fabulous. Strangely, I think it would be best if you have not read the books; but definitely see the first movie. There is no recap at all. The deviations from the book, although necessary I suppose, kind of bothered me.

Paul

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (12/28/2002 10:12:42 AM)

Ok it's several days since the movie now, and threads to Two Towers abound.

I have even witnessed a thread mentioning that the "People" involved with the Twin Towers want this movie renamed (ultimately idiotic notion).

Ok first off, stop thinking any movie anywhere, made any time, will ever be entirely like its novelization.
There WILL be differences.
So commenting there were differences, is like complaining that water is wet.

Second, if you didn't like Two Towers, stop trying to convince her to swallow, when she finally does, you will complain about that too!

3 hours...man I could have sat through 4 hours and smiled all the while.
When the last one is finally shown, I will go out and likely buy some all inclusive release, so I can do an all at once complete viewing (I like anime though, and often watch an entire series in one go, like watch all 12 hours of Neon Genesis Evangelion).

There is no "ultimate comment" on this film though, any more than there is a proper response to "honey does this dress make me look fat".

In the end, Lord of the Rings has been the best film entertainment of my entire life.
That includes having seen Star Wars opening day, so long ago.
Best fiction I have ever read though, is still the Dune series.
But Tolkien rules my number one slot in Fantasy Literaure.
I am glad they didn't ruin it like they did the movie Dune.
Now that film I hated.

Right on, Les. I had great hopes for Dune as a film, and it was garbage.

So, what do ya think? Can we get 'em to do a film trilogy of Isaac Asimov's "Foundation," "Foundation and Empire," and "Second Foundation?" Or will they ruin that, too (like they did Heinlein's "Starship Troopers")?

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (12/28/2002 8:23:16 PM)

Hmmm Foundation eh... nice idea all things considered.

Are you aware though, that several other books have been written for that series?

I don't have all the names at this moment, but I think there is like 4 other titles out there (I have them, just can't recall them, and to lazy to go upstairs at look at this time hehe).

Another nice target would also be to film 2061 and 3001 which polishes off a great story line as well.

Other titles are:
Prelude to Foundation
Forward the Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation and earth

There are also other books based on foundation and written by other authors than Asimov (after his death); I've read the first of those books but I didn't like them (can't remember the title: Foundation endangered or something like that...): it was not written by Asimov, period.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (12/28/2002 11:11:03 PM)

Yep got those titles.

I always liked the way Azimov could write a great story with small words heheh. Not all authors require big wordy sentences to make a good story fortunately.

scimitar -> (12/29/2002 12:17:36 AM)

Les,

in the introduction of one of the Foundation's books, Asimov gives a list of all his romans and novels that could be linked with Foundation to make a kind of "big history of the Humanity". That begins with the Robot series, pursuing with Elijah Baley and R. Daneel Olivaw stories, then the birth and grow of the Empire, and finally Foundation. I've read all those books in that order; it was great. Did you make that too?

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (12/29/2002 1:22:06 AM)

No have not had the pleasure of some of the other works yet, but I know of some of the names.

Sami -> LOTR (12/29/2002 5:28:25 AM)

Saw it the other night.
...
..
.
****, it was good.

I was a bit disappointed by the 'quick' end of the Battle of Helms Deep (where was the forest of thos half-ents taking care of the rest of the damned orcs & Uruk-Hais?). I guess Jackson ran into time problems, the 3 hour margin pressing the man to cut scenes out of the final version.

But Helms Deep was very close to what I had visualized myself reading the book, and especially the Isengard Army nearing as a sea of torches was fabulous.

As another oddity in the movie was that the rohirrim, saving the day at Helms Deep, rode down a slope that was pretty **** steep (IMHO), but then again, the Riders of Rohan are the best riders in Middle Earth.

Cheers,
Sami

P.S. My wife is among those uncivilized who hasn't read the book. She liked the 1st movie, and just hours before I showed her one of the maps of Middle Earth I have. We had watched the 1st movie on DVD as a refreshment the night before and she was puzzled by all the places mentioned.
It was funny that Faramir & pals inspected a somewhat identical map in the movie.
:)

Unknown_Enemy -> (1/3/2003 10:45:24 PM)

The movie was ok, bot a few points disappointed me.

Gollum. In the film, he is just a schizophrene hearing different personalities voices in his head. In the book every single act he did was intended to let him take back the ring.

Gripoil. Gandalf's horse (can't remember the name'stranslation) . Hell !!! He was white !!???!!!!! He is a grey horse !!!????!!!!

As a whole, good film, but the first one was better.

I have some hope for the the return of the king.
