Agreed. As I was driving around the Island I kept thinking too myself no way would a 1941 or 1942 Japanese army would have captured this place. They just did not have what it took offensively to make it happen.

great pictures m8, even my GF enjoyed looking at beaches...
About 1941 December landing, dunno really. Luzon and Malaya was captured by inferior IJA army compared to garrisons there.
to US navy/air force some kind of attack on Pearl was possible but highly unlikely and we know how it ended.
To USA landing and occupation of Hawaii by Japan was unthinkable, i believe army at 07/12/1941 was in so bad shape (locked armories, commanders and men on leave, tanks not serviced properly or without full crews)

If they landed on Pearl attack not even 5 us divisions wouldn't stop 2 IJA ones. Landing on some other day after war started is another matter but on 07/12/1941 US would have had a very bad day.

SS Bowfin looks a lean, mean machine.

USN Requin in my neighborhood (she's at the Carnegie Science Center, Pittsburgh) was upgraded several times after WWII, her sail is ~3 times taller & she don't look near as nasty as Bowfin.
