Originally posted by Grotius Well, the original poster may be understandably worried about safely getting the CV from Rabaul to Truk so that it can be sent back to Tokyo. Once the FLT damage (and fire too?) is down to zero, then it's safer to sail from Rabaul to Truk. If FLT damage is still high, let Rabaul fix that before setting sail for Truk (and Tokyo).
Yes , I agree with what your saying, but I was trying to emphasise a point that that amount of damage on any ship is gotta be Japan no questions, UNLESS it is very late in long scenario where Japanese committment is considerably lower. The original poster did not mention flot and fire damage and to my mind reading between the lines by nthe fact he was even considering leaving it in port in Truk at 58 damage that this did not come into the equation in this instance. Now onto the risk of getting to Truk in order to send to Japan, well it is a risk but one that must be taken eventually. First use the weather to your advantage ie dont start the journey on a clear day wait till thunderstorms. Dont use a huge escort, try limit it somewhat , less chance of being spotted and make sure you fly cap over it as much as you can while in Indian territory. Some bombers hate flying against Capped Tf's unescorted so unless the US has P38's you should be fairly safe.
