marcosortega -> damaged ships + Japan (12/20/2002 3:24:25 PM)

Hi,
Currently in my campaign I've got some of my CVs damaged (and sunk :)).
Zuikaku is something like 58 system damage.
I dont really know what should I do with the CV :
a) Leave it in Rabaul (level 8 port) -but it takes lot of time for the system damage to decrease-.
b) Bring it to Truk (level 9 port) (should be similar long)
c) Bring it to Japan : is this a good idea? Will I get back the CV? Is it worth sending CVs or other ships to Japan? Does they upgrade somehow (is it worth the upgrade, what happens with the pilots)? Are they repaired very fast? Much faster than in Rabaul? When should I use the option of sending ships to Japan?
Thanks for support!!
Happy Xmas :)

You have to send aircraft carriers back to Japan. They repair the slowest of all ships. Even in Truk it would take a year or more to get rid of 58 system damage. You will get it back, or combined fleet will send a replacement.

Wow , with 58 sys damage you ask that question. Send it to Japan immediatly. Its absolutly useless to you as is ,even if can fly planes from it its one very easy target.

Well, the original poster may be understandably worried about safely getting the CV from Rabaul to Truk so that it can be sent back to Tokyo. Once the FLT damage (and fire too?) is down to zero, then it's safer to sail from Rabaul to Truk. If FLT damage is still high, let Rabaul fix that before setting sail for Truk (and Tokyo).

Yes , I agree with what your saying, but I was trying to emphasise a point that that amount of damage on any ship is gotta be Japan no questions, UNLESS it is very late in long scenario where Japanese committment is considerably lower.

The original poster did not mention flot and fire damage and to my mind reading between the lines by nthe fact he was even considering leaving it in port in Truk at 58 damage that this did not come into the equation in this instance.

Now onto the risk of getting to Truk in order to send to Japan, well it is a risk but one that must be taken eventually. First use the weather to your advantage ie dont start the journey on a clear day wait till thunderstorms. Dont use a huge escort, try limit it somewhat , less chance of being spotted and make sure you fly cap over it as much as you can while in Indian territory. Some bombers hate flying against Capped Tf's unescorted so unless the US has P38's you should be fairly safe.

Shok and Zui are probably the most important assests you have as an IJN player, and keeping them alive at all costs is definately worth the effort.

FWIW -

Check the default route that she's going to take from Rabul to Truk. I think she'll make that swing west towards New Guinea. Make sure you've planes on CAP along the route, esp as you move closer to New Guinea. Also, make sure you've got planes on ASW at both Truk and Rabul.

Make sure you've got a nice welcome home party for her at Truk with any ASW assets you have stationed there. Put some guys on patrol in Truks hex, to try to hit any subs that show up. Also, when she's about 3 days out, you might send out a squadron of DDs or anything else you've got that's ASW capable to merge with her TF, in case the ASW guys already in Truk have missed anything.

You also might consider "forcing" her to steam away from the bombers of New Guinea (with patrol/no retire) to a hex somewhere NE of Rabul, and then follow-up by setting her destination to Truk.

Can you tell I love to hunt cripples with my subs?

Hello marcosortega

If she still has 58 systems damage when you get her back to Truk, it will take 243 days before she becomes available again in Tokyo.

That's a very precise figure Finnegan. Have you information on how long it takes to repair each ship type? Very interested if you have.

Finnegan -> (12/22/2002 6:25:49 AM)

Hello Howard,

Yes, but was reluctant to post it here because some may not want the formula. I did a lot of tests with v1.2, and unless the formulas have changed you can figure out exactly how long it will take before the ship becomes available again. Getting it released though, that's a different story. I'll dig out my notes and send you what I have found in a PM.
