Foley -> New terrain types (4/4/2000 10:27:00 PM)

I have seen in some newsgroup posting that there are several new terrain types including, stone walls, bocage (sp?). I was wondering if these will be hex edge terrain, or will they be the center hex terrain, like all previouse terrian types.

They go down teh middle of hex like streams or roads. "Hex Edge" was just too hard to implement given the way the game is designed. That leads to some potentially odd combat effects, but they are primarily infantry cover and movement obstacles, so the penalties or benefits effect units that "enter" the hex. Wheeled vehicles for example can't go over walls or bocage (maybe even hedges, if they are like the arbor vitea in my backyard :-) When tanks enter a bocage hex, they are vulnerable to being it on the "bottom" by opfire unless a Dozer (cullin device) tank creates a breach first. So stay in the hex adjacent if you want to be "behind" the bocage. We are trying to include the "big picture" terrain effects, and abstract a bit what might be going on in the hex itself.

Good question, Foley You will enjoy the many new types of terrain that are included in the game. They include stone walls, hedges, bocage, mud (a killer for vehicles)and more. Even though they traverse the middle of the hex, they play very well. As Paul has stated, to change this feature would require a major rewriting of the code. Its just not feasible at this point. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. ------------------ Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator of Scenario Design The Gamers Net

With regards to terrain. Is there any way to place inpenetrable (at least to most vehicles) terrain, e.g., cliffs, broken ground. (I can just see commandos out flanking defences by climbing undefended cliffs)
