coreyjones -> Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 2:55:30 AM)

So it is June of 42 and I am getting ready for an Invasion of Port Moresby and Noumea when during my last turn the allies decide its a great idea to land troops on Etoforu. I literaly said out loud " Da Fuq". Never thought they would have the nuts to pull something like this. Here is my problem. I dont know what they have Navally speaking and all my Carriers and my BB's are getting ready for the Invasion of Moresby and Noumea. The only TF capable of dishing out damage is in Manila, which is Kurita's four mogami's. So i am rushing them full speed to Osaka while a troop transport is loading about 6 thousand troops so i can take it back. Has any body else had this happen to them and if so whats the best way of dealing with this. I am also transporting air power to the area to possibly recon enemy fleet Strength. Its going to take me at most 5 days to get everything up there and ready.

yikes, was the back door left unlocked w/ the burglar alarm off?

what you need immediately is some Emily/Mavis naval search fans, air recon of Etorofu, & a few small patrol-boat TFs to trail their coats in the area, sniffing for attacks by carrier aircraft.

don't go rushing in w/ those CAs or transports unless covered by substantial LRCAP, w/ adequate NavSearch.

it's an extremely aggressive move by your oppo. could be a throwaway spoiler move just to mess w/ you, could be the opener of a major counter-offensive to seize more of the Kuriles.

Yes and round about the same time. My response was similar but I had a small surface TF in Osaka, expletives included.[:D]

You are toast. Prepare for the full scale landings by Allies. Forget about Noumea as player who lands in June 1942 at Etorofu, has at least 1 division behind 5 forts in Nomuea by this time. Shift your forces moving to Nomea to Japan and try to get rid of Allies as soon as possible as without it you could say good bye to all industries located in Northen Japan within 2 month period.

On what objective facts do your base your assessment that Japan is toast?

1. Etorofu has no airfield.

2. 4Es need a level 5 airfield (minimum) to operate from efficiently. 2Es do not pose much of a strategic threat.

3. It is most unlikely that sufficient Allied engineers have been landed to get up and running a level 5 airfield (not to mention repairing any port damage and building other infrastructure) within 2 months.

4. Building up supply depots is limited due to spoilage and the very long SLOC.

5. Etorofu is at the end of an extremely long and vulnerable SLOC. Have you considered the effort which is now called for from the Allies to turn that piece of rock into a useful and dangerous base?

6. The OP already knows what was landed to capture the island. He is only embarking a counter invasion force of 6000 men. That means there is not much of an Allied garrison and it will soon be starving.

7. The Allies lack the airframes to launch any meaningful strategic air campaign from or to defend the island.

8. Worthwhile strategic targets within range of Etorofu are somewhat limited.

This is nothing but a Hail Mary. It may bear some fruit if Japan panicks and rushes in unprepared to eliminate this lodgement. Certainly there is no need to pull back the KB. Japanese LBA will easily impose a cordon sanitaire and sink any Allied carriers found in the vicinity.

This is a good opportunity fro Japan to eliminate some valuable Allied assets which will be hard to replace.

Alfred, peacemaker is teasing. Don't be so straightforward all the time. Toke a few now and then, like Bullwinkle, that stoner. [:'(]

edit: Excuuuse me. See posts 11 and 12. [8|]

MAurelius -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 11:11:54 AM)

exactly - recon and NavS first - have a good look around - then crush him - you have the advantage in June 42 - don't do anything hasty... prepare a counterattack and then bag those units he "wasted" up there ;)

Puhis -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 11:54:46 AM)

I presume he is playing AI game? Allied AI does that in 1942, invade silly places. No worries, just let them rot there.

dr.hal -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 1:55:48 PM)

I agree with Puhis, do what the Allies will do unto you! Starve them out, you don't need the base and the Allies will feel obligated to keep it alive.... kill the life line. It is a well known tactic, wounding an enemy soldier is far more burdensome to your enemy than outright killing him.

Miller -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 2:44:56 PM)

Too early for the Allies. June 43 perhaps, but not June 42.

peacemaker1945 -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 3:20:38 PM)

Alfred, sorry I am not forum strategist(I have played 2 such guys in the past) who speaks loudly but surrenders as Allies after loosing 2 CVs, so I am not going to write here long explanation why I think so, all I would say and people who have played Empire and Allies will agree. All I say, if someone playing as Japan planning to land in Noumea and PM at June of 1942, if I was Allies I will land in force everywhere I like as Japan seems to be in very impotent hands.
I wonder who are you playing routinely, PM shall be conqured by Japan by end of January 1942 latest, Noumea shall be invaded by end of March 1942. If you are planning out of schedule as Japan, be prepared to be hit hard by Allies, simple as this.
Sorry to disturbing you from analysis of Etorofu airfield size, please continue and tell srv that he is just fine.

Understand fully where you are coming from. Which is why I suspected you had a serious intent in your post.

Nothing wrong with making a move to exploit/punish enemy over confidence or disregard for sound real world military considerations. However on objective grounds, a June 1942 move to Etorofu is of no serious concern to a competent Japanese commander because it is fundamentally adventurism. The sort of player who surrenders after losing 2 CVs is not, IMO a competent or suitable player for this game.

As a summary, I think Puhis get it most right. First question to SRV should be "Are you playing AI or human?" [:D]
If its a human, I hope SRV shares with us this story more or even start AAR, as it seems a quite entertaining move.[8D]

Lokasenna -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 7:50:15 PM)

Exact same thing happened to me when playing against the AI in June of 1942. I had no surface forces in the vicinity (thanks for the lesson, AI, you're serving your purpose!) and had to hightail some up from the Port Moresby area. By the time I got there, the AI had landed at Sakhalin as well, and I welcomed the opportunity to collect some free VPs from sinking the APs and escorting DDs.

coreyjones -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 10:22:00 PM)

I am playing the AI. Sorry i didnt respond earlier... i work night shift. I so far have been able to move Kurita up to Osaka and i am prepping some para units right now to drop in and hold them off. They have a few merchies and a DD and maybe a CA. My prob now though is that while sailing up to osaka kurita went through a rough storm i am thinking and well the system damages on all the ships are up to nine or just below. so what now

Alfred -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/23/2012 10:31:20 PM)

System damage of 9, particularly if none of it is "major", is not a big consideration. A few days of pierside repair will get it down (see my ship repair 101 guide) or you can just disregard it and proceed with whatever you had in mind.

The only concern now is if the AI script is to follow up an Etorofu landing with a Sakhalin Island landing you should take some measures now to prevent the destruction of some important raw material centres.

Alfred

coreyjones -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/24/2012 12:50:03 AM)

So update. The para units i dropped in did the job right away and the enemy task force seems to be on its way out of the area. Going to beef up the kuriles with garrison troops to make sure this never happens again. Thank you all again for your help and words of wisdom.

Chris21wen -> RE: Allies Landing at Etoforu in 42 (12/24/2012 6:35:36 AM)

I moved some air units to suitable bases in range ans sent my Northern surface fleet to bombard next turn but it engaged the surface units instead.  In the mean time I loaded div based in Northern Japan and sent that.  The AI invaded using a Bn or Rgt (can't remember which) and a amall surface TF which was destroyed my mine, the Amphib TF ran away leaving the Allied unit out on a limb.  Other than the recon and search no Japanese air units did anything other than ground attack.
