Bullwinkle58 -> OT: iPhone 5 (1/2/2013 9:31:14 PM)

Thinking of taking the plunge to a smartphone and for various reasons I don't want to go Droid. Looking at pricing options versus capability. Knowing that a thread like this could quickly go south into lots of conflicting opinion, which can be fun but wouldn't help me at the sales counter so much, I'd like to pose two questions to those who actually have an iPhone 5 now:

If you have the 16 GB version, is it enough? Or do you wish you'd gone with the 32 GB?

If you have the 32 GB are you happy you bought more memory, or was it a waste?

I've read a bunch of articles about how the two levels are used by different sorts of users, and I'm on the cusp. I will have lots of music, some photos, no video, no TV or movie watching, and I have no idea on apps. I have no experience with apps. Is $100 too much for the extra room if I'm unsure?

I am very happy with 16gb, use a lot of cloud storage so the size isn't an issue. I upgraded to a 4s not the 5 as the camera is the same and I could not see what the 5 gave me that I needed - and that was cheaper. If space is really an issue have a look at this beauty - its rather a nice solution.

I have tons of apps on mine, far more than I ever use, and that is not what takes up space - its the sound and media files. Its up to you how much of that you store.

Very happy with 16gb 4S. Have a lot of friends who are moaning about the 5 battery life

The wifi drive looks neat. NEver heard of those.

I do want to carry a lot of music. I don't have an iPod. Probably 5000 MP3s at least. From what I read it seems apps range from under a meg to a gig for some games and productivity stuff. My interests would probably be on the smaller side.

Thanks for the ideas.

Girl of the Prairie has had a 4S for a year. She doesn't drive it hard; it's mostly a phone and texter. She had problems with battery when it was new and took it back to the store. They flashed a new something and it fixed it. I think it was polling the server or doing location checks too much or something. The transmitter was eating up the battery. Since the flash she gets about two days to go down 50%. Not bad for a smartphone. My little dumb phone goes a week or more.

Thanks for the response.

RogerJNeilson -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/3/2013 8:39:03 AM)

One advantage of the external drive is that it will fit with any future device, if you pay the equivalent for a bigger capacity Iphone that capacity stays with the iphone - if you get my meaning.

I have a 16 gb iPhone. I have 25 albums in my phone (about 300 pieces), and at the moment music takes about 2,4 gb. So if you want to have thousands of MP3s, you probably need 32 gb memory. Or low quality music files.

JocMeister -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/3/2013 10:32:40 AM)

Iīm an android user so I canīt really help you on the Iphone advice. But as Puhis says you really need to go with the 32GB version if you want to fit 5000 MP3s. Otherwise you will be forced to use quite poor quality to fit them all.

I donīt know what kind of camera the iPhone has but I have a 8 Mpixel one and each photo takes up about 2MB so if you take a few pictures it will fill up fast if you use it a lot!

littleike -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/3/2013 12:56:09 PM)

16 Gb for iphone are right for my experience. Obviously if you think to archive everything on the device maybe also 1 TeraB is not enough.
Go for 16 and save some money. Think that in this moment Apple is going to assemble iPhone 6 ,designing iPhone 7 and brain storming on iPhone 8….. so don't worry, buy it with confidence. You have not to leave it to your children. [:)]

I do. I see a lot of on-line chortling from Droid users that they can add memory after purchase.

My MP3s are mostly all old, and run about 3 meg per song. Looking at that now I think I might could get along with 2000 or so. [:)] I have about 13,000 on the old PC, and loading them over isn't that hard.

What I don't know is what apps I would like. I think on balance, for $100 and considering the life-cycle cost of the contract, that the 32 GB is a better risk/reward. Probably buy this weekend. Amazon is geting a case order today.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Well they have to find some reason for their purchase I guess.....

Lol

I love Droids if only that the competition keeps even a modicum of humbleness present in Apple HQ.

RogerJNeilson -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/3/2013 4:54:16 PM)

Humbleness.... Apple..... the two are not words I would ever expect together. I am a dedicated Apple fanboy but .........

crsutton -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/3/2013 6:13:11 PM)

Yes, don't fall into the storage trap. The notion of storage is rapidly becoming obsolete with all sorts of cloud storage available. I suggest Dropbox which I use for my real estate business. I have a Iphone 4 phone and it is a lot cheaper and works just great. The thing about a $100 dollar phone vs a $400-500 phone is you don't walk around worrying about losing it or dropping it. I used to have a Droid and made the switch. They just can't complete with Apple. This is especially true if you have or are considering and IPad.

I don't use a lot of apps. It gets a bit tedious. But Google Maps is a must and if you are a reader, Overdrive Media allows you to download books and tapes from almost any public library system.

I have the latest IPhone.. with as many music files as you're wanting to put on it, and add to the at number in the future, I would go with 32.

Love the phone BTW. I upgraded all of my trading staff to them.

My local AT&T plan, may be the national, don't know, offers the 4 for free with 2-year, the 4S for $99, and the 5 at $199, $299, and $399. The new processor and the 4G are what makes me go 5, the screen dimensions are a bonus. The new power plug is a negative, but I'll survive. Just ordered an Otterbox Commuter case on Amazon. GOTP has the Defender, but it's too big for a jeans pocket, and I don't go out that much, or drop things like she does. [:)]

jeffk3510 -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/3/2013 7:18:37 PM)

The more I think about it.. no one really needs 32 gigs.

Apollo11 -> RE: OT: iPhone 5 (1/4/2013 10:01:23 AM)

Hi all,

I had all iPhone versions except the 1st one (the EDGE only and no 3G was big problem in Europe so we waited for 2nd generation and 3G version)... [:)]

I love(d) [:D] my:

iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S

But I am ambiguous about iPhone 5... it is the first one that I will skip...

I currently have iPhone 4S 64 GB and I am very happy with it! [:)]

I have a 64GB iPod touch and I can't fit all my music on it so you keep have to rotate stuff in and out. If your whole collection is less than 32gb and more than 16gb by all means get the larger one and enjoy. Of course I could ruin you with podcasts that will help fill up that phone. How about http://www.pritzkermilitarylibrary.org/Home/Podcasts.aspx you can subscribe to anything at all that interests you through iTunes. Try Napoleon 101 , or the History of Rome podcast and watch your life just melt away. Enjoy

I'm more "News from Lake Wobegon" and "Click & Clack". I get MP3 s of them off Usenet. I just checked and my music folder is 124 GB, so there will be some swapping. [:)]

Both of those are podcasts, might as well have itunes load them up automatically. Alas, Car Talk is winding down, it was a bit of in institution around here. The show had nothing to do with cars and was all about people.
