I'm having a problem with my reading comprehension(no big surprise there) and I need help. 2.2.4 describes Player defined upgrades as "freely" upgrading air units. Does that mean my air units will automatically upgrade?

What happens if I don't freely upgrade units?

I started slow in the Coral Sea scenario and am currently reading the manual. So far I've just moved the Lexington and Yorktown(I'm allies) around to get a feel for movement.

What it means is that you can choose the type of aircraft to which the unit upgrades (or you can choose to downgrade the unit to an older aircraft type of you wish). With PDU turned off, your units can only upgrade to the types of aircraft to which they historically upgraded - which can be quite limiting (and no downgrading is possible).

Welcome to the game ... PDU On means that airgroups can be upgraded to any plane of the same type and nationality which are available. PDU OFF means that airgroups can only be upgraded along the scenario defined upgrade path.

For the Coral Sea scenario, there is no need to bother as it is a very short scenario.

For the Grand Campaign, which is better for a learning player?

You can go either way here, but the easiest is PDU ON (also what a lot of PBEM's have) as it allows some flexibility.

Have a look at some of my video's.

I would recommend PDU on for at least the first campaign. Personally, I always have played with it on. Some people hate it, but it does prevent getting into a dead end if one plane type has higher attrition than in the real world. If that happens, you could end up with units that can't upgrade at all with PDU off.

Some people consider it gamey, especially for the Japanese player who has the ability to change production around and produce whatever they want. The Allies have fixed production levels, so it isn't as gamey for the Allied player. It just allows you to use what you've been given a bit better.
