Laxplayer -> Issue with night fighters (1/28/2013 4:14:59 AM)

PBEM game. I sent my P-70 squadron to Burma where I'm mostly night bombing since my opponent has a marked air superiority in late 42. They have good EXP, and good Air/Def skills, and the leader is a good and one with 60-something in aggression (all the important pilot ratings are close to, or above 70's). The base has a level 7 AF, with an HQa and about 3 times the required air support.

Seems like an ideal situation where a squadron would fly regularly. However, no matter what I do, they haven't flown but once in about 2-3 weeks of assigning them various missions. Sweep (both targeted and commander's discretion at between 1-10k altitude), escort, and CAP missions simply aren't flown. The only thing I DID get them to do was fly a 100ft sweep mission where they strafed an airfield, killed nothing but grass and lost 3 of their airframes. One of those missions was enough. I did get them to "show up" in the combat replay by assigning them LRCAP over an enemy base that I was bombing that night, however they didn't participate in the A2A rolls vs. enemy CAP and they weren't listed in the combat report, which I also found odd.

Any help? Is this a bug? Am I doing it wrong?

thanks

Not a bug.

1. Aggression is not a relevant consideration to look for in an air unit leader.

2. You cannot fly night escort missions.

3. With it's ordnance (not[:)]) the P-70 is a very poor plane to use on night sweeps.

4. Night DL is very important. Without it don't expect any contact.

For all practical purposes, there really are only two meaningful night missions:

(a) airfield attack by bombers

(b) night CAP over own base to degrade enemy night bombing

I would add city attacks at night. For sure manpower attacks are viable and can cause industry disablement via damage (most commonly) or destruction. I can't speak to non-manpower attacks, as in the one game I've got in '45 my opponent has self-limited to manpower attacks.

Thanks for your response.

I started playing Uncommon Valor years ago, and just kind of assumed that Aggression was a relevant consideration in WitP too, especially for a fighter unit leader. It would be used in rolls to determine whether a unit would fly a mission (low agg would fly less against opposition), and how long they would stick around in a dogfight... at least that was my assumption or vague recollection. This is not the case in WitP-AE?

Also, what is "Night DL?"

DL = detection level. Read pages 217-221 of the manual for DL and MDL.

Night operations also have the added input factor of radar.
