Funny enough the news made me remember.. as the had a little feature on it. 70 years ago German 6th Army surrendered in Stalingrad. Around 90,000 men where taken prisoner..less than 6,000 I believe made it homes..many not until the 1950's. Makes you realise it wont be long before any veterans are left from any side...

This forum would be sooo boring without the Slaak. [:D] Anyways back to topic, you're right Wodin, the numbers are staggering no matter how many times I see them. 300.000 in the cauldron, 100.000 captured and sent to the camps, 5.000 return 10 years later. You're also right about the vets, not many of them left. My g/f father was a German soldier during WWII and he's getting real old and really really fragile now. Does't leave the house anymore, and spends his days between his bed and the couch. I hope he has still some time left, but it sure is running out for him.

5,000 came back alive in 1955 out of over 300,000 men. I've studied Stalingrad for over 30 years and I'm still amazed by that.

8 or 9 years in a lead mine living underground in the mine..was a death sentence. Or railway line in the frozen wastes. A good film I saw recently was The way back about an escape from a Gulag. Has anyone read William Craigs Enemy At The Gates about the battle of Stalingrad? It had been out of print for years but became available several years ago.

It is and he probably was. No way he made the long march and parade. The eyes are very haunting. TulliusDetritus. I think a lot of the apathy has to do with the effects of the Cold War, the Iron Curtain, and the fact that the Soviets were considered an enemy here in These States for so long. Doesn't make it right and you are spot on in your post, but I think that is one of the issues. The Germans were our enemy that we quickly became the protector of. mo reb

It's really hard for me to comprehend that. What's amazing is that those 2 million men could be swallowed up in the vastness of the fields on the way to Stalingrad. It's kinda like the Pacific Ocean but with endless fields.
