Was there a submarine with the number 06? What I am asking is did they number the submarines like they did the carriers and only surface vessels?

SS 6 was the first USS Pike, launched in 1903 and expended as a target in 1922.

They did... But the numbers were muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch higher than 6.(Terminus) Ok but I was wondering about the named boats like Seawolf, Nautilus et al. I know the pig boats start around 30 but what about the others?

Every submarine had a pennant number, all the way back to SS 1. They increased consecutively. All the boats "named" with a combination of letters and numbers had a pennant number as well. S-1, for instance, was SS 105.

Interesting trivia found on the Wikipedia link for SSN-698 Bremerton oldest American nuclear submarine still in service: When USS Los Angeles (SSN-688) was decommissioned on 23 January 2010, Bremerton became the oldest commissioned submarine in the US fleet. On that day, Richard O'Kane's cribbage board was transferred from Los Angeles to Bremerton, a tradition that dates back to World War II. Nice tradition I'd say! Coincidental, I just finished reading "The Bravest Man: Richard O'Kane and the Amazing Submarine Adventures of the USS Tang".
