VT-88 was one of the few squadrons that never suffered a loss in WWII.

Assigned to the CV-10 Yorktown in June 1943 as Radioman Gunner, Lawrence Roy Rasmussen served his country with honor.

His aviation log said he sunk the Oyodo, Iwata and Koriyama.

Not listed were a few other destroyers.

He flew escort for Do Little. When finished they would depart and find targets for their 500lb bomb.

The squadron also hit the most heavily defended factory in Japan. The electronics factory.

Not to mention airfield attacks.

One day I met a Japanese woman at Home Depot. She told me the SBD Dauntless were the most hated plane in Japan.

They called them Little Blue Birdies.

They would appear at any time and drop bombs.

The Fighting Lady was very famous.

There is a two hour movie in color on the internet made by the US government.

His most favorite missions were when they droped supplies for POW's.

The POW's climbed on top of roofs and painted "POW" so he knew where to drop the supplies.

His most hated mission was near the end of the war when flying back home from a mission they caught a lonely destroyer along the coast line.

I didn't have a chance. After it was finished they flew over the sunken ship and machine gunned the survivors swimming away.

It was one thing to drop bombs on them but to fly down low and kill a man who was swimgming for survival... he couldn't do it.

His most feared missions:

When the Zero's came down after him when he was flying by the seat of his pants and they were shooting at him.

And just to make sure everyone knew the war was over...

They took this picture.

THE END
