As a new player coming in to this monster of a game, where should I read up on it before hand?

As It looks like one that should not be just jumped into with out some knowledge.

There are some great training videos here:

Also, get and learn how to use tracker done by the same guy, n01487477. He is a great guy and answers questions on what he does very well and helps you get things going! [&o][&o]

Canoerebel -> RE: Looking at giving this a go (2/22/2013 8:59:04 PM)

This is a huge game, but it's fairly intuitive.  IE, if your the Allies, you know something bad's going to happen on December 7.  From that point, you husband your men, aircraft, ship, equipment and supplies so that you can take places that Japan doesn't want you to take.

If the idea of complex planning intrigues you - you have the ability to invade New Guinea in early 1942 or the Kuriles in 1943 etc. ad infinitum - this is the game for you.

Most of us just jumped into the game, but we had a big advantage.  Many of us learned the interface basics through years of playing predecessors Uncommon Valor and War in the Pacific.  That made a huge difference.

But I think if I was really interested in this game, I'd buy and start off by playing several matches agains the AI, while also reading After Action Reports in this forum.  Then, as soon as I felt minimally competent, I'd try to find another newb so that we could rattle the cage by playing each other.  We'd make lots of mistakes, but who would care?  That's how you learn.

I've been playing UV/WitP/AE since 2003.  They are the only games I've purchased in at least eight years.  I expect AE to be all I want in a game for the foreseeable future.  I've got years more in me.

I fully agree with Canoerebel on the cost effectiveness of this game. It is the only computer game I have purchased since I purchased it. My playing of other games (Federation Commander, Star Fleet Battles, Federation and Empire, other board games by MMP in their OCS Series) has suffered as well! My family would think I had abandoned them if I hadn't thought about that ahead of time and put the computer in a central place in the house where they can see and hear from me on a regular basis...

You will find yourself wanting to know more about this theater and buying more history books such as "Shattered Sword" and "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors". I am planning a trip with the family to see my sister in law in Houston. We are taking a full day to get there and then 1/2 a day back, stopping in Baton Rouge to see the Kidd, and then 1/2 a day back home. [:D]

Next summer my son's boy scout troop is going to the Yorktown for an overnight and spending time at the museum there. They will be earning merit badges while I explore the ships there... [:D]

Just a warning... [:-]

I suggest reading an AAR that is to your liking. There are lots of good ones out there and most of them are entertaining and educational at the same time. Every time I read one I want to fire up the game.

This a game you can grow old with. I mean... Hmmm? What was I talking about?

Oh yeah. Never mind - just buy the game and have some fun. Everything else seems to fade with time...

A basic knowledge of WW2 in the Pacific is definitely required, but you don't have to be an expert - although some of these guys on this forum are serious experts. (If they don't have PhDs in history, I'd be surprised.)

A good place to get started is right here on this forum. The general discussion, War Room and AAR pages are all loaded with information. In addition, there are some excellent tutorial videos available. Damian (n01487477) in particular has some very nice ones available in the sticky thread above.

Another good way to get info is to just post questions right here. The vast majority of the guys (and gal) who frequent this forum are very polite and eager to help. Every once in awhile, you'll catch someone having a bad day and they'll be a bit surly in their reply, but that's exceedingly rare.

Welcome aboard! (And if you haven't already bought the game, do so. It is the best gaming investment you will ever make - by far.)

Chickenboy -> RE: Looking at giving this a go (2/23/2013 4:51:31 PM)

Welcome Larac,

Like many others on this forum, I became addicted in 2002 when I stumbled across Uncommon Valor. I was riveted until War in the Pacific came out. That kept me in wargaming clover until WiTP:AE came out. It's been my go to game since.

This franchise has held my attention for the last 10 years. Amazing. I've purchased a smattering of other titles in the interim-most of which are unplayed or barely touched. There's something so satisfyingly deep about this game that I *still*-a decade later-find myself daydreaming about it at the office or on the drive in to work. Fast and furious carrier combat or surface combat still leaves me breathless. When a plan comes together, I feel invincible. When a plan doesn't work, I fall into despair.

Such amazing longevity and front-of-mind presence doesn't come cheaply. You will find that the "just one more turn" philosophy in this game brings about your ruination. Personal life? HA! You've really got to watch yourself-it's worse than Civilization!

So, it'll ruin your life, misalign the stars and bring about the downfall of civilization. You should definitely join us. [8D]

Start with the Allied side. When you're ready for a real experience, play as the Japanese. It's a whole 'nuther layer of complexity, but not for the timid.

Thanks all~!

The Pacific Theater has always has my eye, for some reason, probably because my Dad was a 20 Sailor.

If memory serves Chief of Fire Control on the Lexington. Miss him a lot.

Will give it a go I think.

thanks again.
