Jorge_Stanbury -> OT - Emperor movie (3/3/2013 5:19:49 AM)

http://www.emperor-themovie.com/

I saw the trailer today; looks interesting, or at the very least, looks like a serious effort to present Japan's early post war destruction

That said, Tommy Lee Jones looks like "Tommy Lee Jones" instead of Gen MacArthur

Capt Hornblower -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/3/2013 7:33:58 PM)

(Double post. Bad lag right now.)

Sorry, but Gregory Peck is no longer with us.

And of course there has to be a love story in it... history by Hollywood, so sad!

Well, MacArthur in love with himself. Pretty standard fare. Is there another love story *in addition to* that one? [;)]

The clip alludes to it, American Officer, Japanese woman.... and you are right, MacArthur with himself....if it is portrayed accurately (but then again this is a movie after all!).

Blackhorse -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/3/2013 9:25:15 PM)

Bonner Fellers, apparently the main protagonist in the movie, is an interesting figure from WWII.

Gen'l Eisenhower despised him, from the time when they served together under MacArthur. Fellers was the US Military Attache in Egypt during Rommel's successful campaigns. The Germans had broken the code that Fellers was using to send dispatches back to the War Department. It was the main source of German intelligence about British intentions and operations in North Africa.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/4/2013 12:32:41 AM)

Gregory Peck was a great MacArthur
I will definitively see the movie; although I understand it will be full of Hollywood's "war epic" crap, just by looking at some of the scenes, they have taken the effort (and the $$$) to make a convincing 1945's Japan

For more on "Mac", also check "American Caesar"

it is in youtube

bradfordkay -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/5/2013 4:02:11 AM)

Funny, but I thought that the film's title was referring to the way MacArthur thought about his own post-war position...

Grfin Zeppelin -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/6/2013 3:08:40 AM)

Love stories can be great in such movies if they are placed into history. It is after all about the people back then.
It is only problematic if history is wraped around a love story or the love story dominates that history movie. That is at least my opinion.

Funny, I assume it referred to Mac's prewar position in the Philippines.

romance in a war movie? [>:][>:][:-]

I only like romance if it is done like in "Rambo II":
brief, little to no dialogue and the most important one: the girl needs to die rather quickly and violently, so that the "hero" can seek his revenge! [;)]

bradfordkay -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/6/2013 9:14:33 PM)

No, no, no... the hero needs to die valiantly so that the girl can turn to his best friend for solace...[:'(]

warspite1 -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/6/2013 9:21:13 PM)

Is Ben Affleck in it? He's a really good actor. Liked him in that thing he did a few years back...what was it called again?

Yes, that's the ticket! It also helps if the female love interest is a real hottie too!

Okay - I'm not really feeling that vibe, but each to their own. [walks off to the east wing, gently calling, as if to a delicate flower] Nicole, where are you?

Well, I'm not sure that Nicole is interested in grown men that talk to flowers, but I could be wrong.

ETA: Sorry, OP. Just a WEE departure from your topic. [:D]

What I need to know is is there an IJN bomber trying to drop bombs on Packards instead of ships or oil tank farms? [:D]

Tolstoy -> RE: OT - Emperor movie (3/13/2013 5:50:05 AM)

Saw the movie today; it is not in wide release, and given the subject matter and reviews I don't expect it ever will be. It was far from great and had many flaws (most annoying being the explanatory narration which filled about half of the first 20 minutes - doncha think someone who bought a ticket for this movie would already know that there were atomic bombs dropped on Japan?), but I think it's still worth seeing for someone that has an interest in the period and $12 burning a hole in their pocket. Mostly, it's a lot of talking about how bizarre and alien Japanese culture is and a story of a long-ago forbidden love with a little bit of politics and intrigue thrown in.

The biggest question the movie left me with was not Hirohito's level of war crime guilt, but how Dr. Shephard got off the island again... the casting decisions for the two main parts were a little odd, to say the least.
