siRkid -> A Must Read Book (12/29/2002 8:40:27 AM)

I just got a copy f "Samura!" by Saburo Sakai with Martin Caidin and Fred Saito. First published in 1957.

It is the memoirs of a Jap fighter Ace during WW2. Right now I am reading about the escort missions he flew out of Lae on bombing runs to PM.

Rick

Didnt he end up with 100+ kills?

Where does he start the game at in the long campaign or does he come in later?

He had 64 comfirmed kills. The book starts with his flight training and his tour in China. It ends in 1945.

It's a great book. It's been a lot of years since I read it. One of the best parts is when he was stations on Iwo (I think) and he played dodge with about 2 or 3 Hellcat squadrons. Mark

Hello Fallschirmjager, in scenario 17 Sakai will be based out of Rabaul with F1/Tainan Daitai flying the A6M2 starting on turn one. He has an experience rating of 99.

I read Samurai in the 5th grade when I was eleven. It has been an all time favorite. After reading the book I would buy Monogram Zeros and put them together. Although I dont know if Monogram gave you a choice of the a6m2 a6m3 or a6m5. I only remember putting together the a6m5.

I would suggest that all read "Fire in the Sky" by Eric Bergerud. A recent book and one of the best books on air war that I have ever read. Focuses on the air war in the South Pacific in 42-43. I gain a better understanding of the dynamics of air warfare.

The important note is that in spite the blazing fury of the carrier battles. The South Pacific campaign was primarily a battle of land based air.

Excellent reading and he has written an earlier companion book on the land campaign.
