Dora09 -> Follow TF and unexplained Ops pts (3/17/2013 4:30:32 AM)

Hello everyone-
In my current PBEM I have noticed a strange occurance more than a few times with my CV TFs. For kb I usually create three Air TF and split my CVs into the three and set two of them to follow the slowest so they are in one big group. For example it usually looks like this:

White ( Slow 7:4): CV, CV, CVL, CVL, CVL....
Black (Medium 8:4): CV, CV, CV, CV......
Silver (Fast 9:4): CV, CV, CV, CV.....

Black and Silver both set to follow White. In previous games this has worked great for me. However, in this game I notice that the group travels fine for a few turns (maybe a week in game time) but then all of a sudden the whole group stalls and moves one hex at a time per phase and when I look at the individual TF they inviariably have one to three ships with maxed out Ops points (usually a CV and BB). The only way I can get them to move when they get like this is to break up the triad and send them off on their own (which presents a different problem since I don't feel comfortable having each one out there alone, must have assured combined CAP)

I always set "no refuel" and "no retire", so they should not be refueling unless I have them hook up with the replenish TF and do it manually so where am I getting these Ops points? Why are they restricted to just a few ships? So far I have not suffered any disasters from this but it freaks me out because I never know when the kb is just going to stall out.

Likely I am missing something obvious, please clue me in.

Thanks everyone.

Your ships are probably getting those OP points by refueling the smaller ships in their individual TF's. Having "Do not Refuel" set will prevent ships from refueling from outside sources, but won't prevent the ships from sharing fuel within their own task forces if they think they need to. For instance, if you put a BB and a DD in the same TF and order it not to refuel, then send them on a trip further than the DD has fuel for, the BB will still share fuel with the DD regardless of your settings. If you don't push your fuel limits very far you'll never see this, but I'm guessing that you were inadvertently pushing your TFs this time (since you mention that it only happens when your TFs have been steaming for a week or so.) Anyway, that's my best guess - others may have something different to offer.

Thanks Quixote,
That makes sense, I thought that too but the ships with the points are always big ships with lots of fuel (the DDs never have points) so that kind of threw me off. You are probably right though, your explanation make most sense.

The big ships with lots of fuel are the ones refueling all the smaller ships. An individual DD won't use a lot of OP refueling, but a CV or BB refueling half a dozen DDs can accumulate quite a few.

Thanks guys,
It makes sense. It just seems to be more of a problem in this game than in my previous ones. Good to know it is fuel related and not something else like the "follow" orders. The strange thing (to me) was that once this happens, they never recover (it would make sense to me if they stall out refueling DDs and then pick up to normal the next turn) but they get caught in this loop for multiple turns and the only way I could break it was to stop the "follow" orders and break up the triad. In my current game I just refueled with a Rep. TF so I will see if they pick up after that.
