robc04_1 -> Resources too abundant? (3/17/2013 4:22:56 PM)

I set up a game with the default settings, although I think I set the size to large. After exploring a small part of the galaxy (10-20%), I was able to secure all of the strategic resources I need and 11 different luxury resources. Resources seem way to abundant which really limits their importance. There really isn't any need to fight over them. I think Distant Worlds drop the ball in this regard since resources are so intrinsic to constructing anything. Resources could have become a great source of contention between empires.

1)Is this the general consensus among players?
2)Is there a way to correct it? I didn't notice any settings that would adjust this.

I notice other empires have resources in my colony's cargo.
3) Is this because they mined it and stored it here, or are these resources that they are purchasing through my colony?

4) What isn't there demand for certain luxuries? Is it because they have access to 10 that are cheaper?

Thanks!

1: The main resources to fight over are the ultra rares. If strategic resources were rare, you would not be able to build ships, which would not be a lot of fun. There is said to be resource shortages at endgame for certain strategics.

2: I don't think there is a way, but denser galaxies should have more resources. Maybe try large maps with fewer stars?

3: Other empire's cargo is bought by them, and is supposed to be picked up by a freighter. They sometimes get lost, though. Materials are reserved either by construction, or by incoming freighters that will take them away. In addition there is fuel reserved by incoming ships with refuel order.

4: I have not paid too much attention. Cities need 10 luxuries, and they tend to achieve that quite easily once they mature a bit.

Thanks for the answers. While I agree that it would be bad not to be able to build any effective ships due to a lack strategic resources, I think it would be more fun if you had to fight for certain ones and maybe have to adjust your strategy more depending on resource availability.

Distant Worlds is a big game with a lot of permutations so I'm sure I've only scratched the surface of how things play out.

1. Based on what I read on this forum about resources and their "rarity" I may say that most propably majority of players feels exacly the same - resources are too abundant. If You ask me - I am very glad that most basic resources are common and do not cause problems (basic = needed for building primitive, tech level 0 equipment), however more advanced and luxury resources are cleary too common. That is how I do feel about it.

2. If there is any way, than I do not know about it.

3. Those are resources bought by other empires, that are waiting for transportation. Sometimes buing empire get counquered before they manage to take their resources ^^

4. I do not know if I am understanding this question correctly - are You asking why some luxury resources are being demanded by colony, while other are not? If so, than it is worth to note that colony needs only 10 luxury resources to achieve 100% development (providing that other requiments are fufiled), so if they have acces to 11, they will not use one of them. I do not know however on what basies they are choosing which 10 out of 11 avilable resources they are going to consume.

I hope my answers help at least a bit :) If somebody will see that I am mistaken somewere, than please - correct me.

Erik said "in Shadows each colony consumes strategic resources based on its size and development. If it doesn't get enough, it won't grow and it will keep demanding those resources even if nothing is being built there"

I think lots more could be done with resources.New resources types could give slight buffs to weapons, speeds, shields, etc without stopping you building ships.Apart from the mega rare resource that give colony buffs I never feel the need to go to war for any.

I like those ideas Ashbery76. I current game design seems to want to have resources take center stage, but then they really never do. Making resources a more integral part of the player's strategy would improve the game a lot I think.

It would also be nice if the player had a greater role in where the resources are delivered. It would be nice if the player could manually request some resources for a colony or port if they knew they would be using them for something. The ability to purchase the resources in advance from the private market. Related to this,it would be to great to allow the player to specify the price they are willing to pay for the resources. If you pay higher than another empire, your shipment would get higher priority. The economy is way too hands off (and dull) in my opinion.
